Return to the Arcade.

The wait is finally over: 15 -count 'em- 15 essential SNK NEO・GEO classics that no gamer should be without, are finally available DRM-free on GOG.com!

These are the games that devoured our entire allowance when we were skipping school to beat them at the Arcade. For convenience's sake, we've broken them down into three bundles:

<span class="bold">METAL SLUG Bundle</span>: Easily the most insatiable coin-eaters of the bunch, METAL SLUG 1, 2, 3, and X are still just as fun as you remember them from these blessed times. They all come sporting GOG Galaxy support complete with leaderboards, and -with the exception of METAL SLUG 2- both local and online multiplayer functionalities.

<span class="bold">Fighting Classics Bundle</span>: These games' legacy is made up of fierce combos, brutal takedowns, and lots of broken controllers: FATAL FURY SPECIAL, SAMURAI SHODOWN 2, SAMURAI SHODOWN V, THE LAST BLADE, THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2000, and THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2002 CLASSIC. Are you up for a rematch? We thought so!

<span class="bold">Arcade Games Bundle</span>: The collection would not be complete without these lesser known but equally addictive hidden gems: BLAZING STAR, BASEBALL STARS 2, KING OF THE MONSTERS, SHOCK TROOPERS, and TWINKLE STAR SPRITES.

Get each game individually for -50% or together with its bundle for 75%.
These discounts will last until June 6, 1PM UTC.

NOTE: Make sure to check each game's individual store page for details on their GOG Galaxy supported features.

A novel idea, why not add a system agnostic release that only includes the roms of the game inside a zip file? Maybe two zip files, one for the bios and one for the game proper.
really those Metal Slug series games have achievements? LOL :D

Katzapult: Are these games censored? I remember I had to set my old MVS to japanese region code if I wanted to play my games uncut. Are the SNk-games on gog uncut or are they censored?
Samuria Shodown 2 and 5 is not censored I don't know about others.

rob.liefeld: The emulator is absolute garbage.
Get NeoRageX and some roms and ignore this release.
In the meantime: shame on you, GOG!

fortune_p_dawg: can i just say that despite what people think i actually quite liked your comic book art back in the 90s
LOL
I'm not him, just a fan like you :D
From what I´ve read so far, some people seem to be pretty upset with the performance of these games. But keep in mind that especially metal slug 2 had quite much slowdown in the arcades too. For this reason snk released metal slug x. The key-binding thing is garbage. That should be patched out. I´ll wait with my purchase / wait for more reviews. Good to hear that the samurai shodown games are uncut. Thanks for the replay. Any info on the metal slug series? Is the blood red or white?

Ahhh I see, its not because you use an old OS, but rather that XP doesn't use 64 bit. I have no idea why the application itself runs under 64 bit though. I do believe thats its probably standardised and this fixable, as the same error would happen if you use, lets say, the programm with the 32 bit version of Windows 7.

This should be easily fixable, all 64 bit versions of operating systems do is increasing the maximum threshold of your RAM from 4 gigabyte to 16 exabyte (so basically open-ended, as of now). With this in mind even a change to 32 bit would be nothing but a tiny change and shouldn't even be considered a true downgrade in this case as there wouldn't be any difference in code other than the maximum RAM threshold.

I don't know if this is a problem that GOG can fix, since its perhaps the games themselves that were compiled for 64 bit OS in mind and thats not something that GOG can do anything about other than trying to aquire 32 bit versions of the games from the publisher.

Sorry, my english is pretty bad. xD I mean that you should be able to remap the controls.
Now, if Magical Drop 3 were here, I would DEFINITELY be impressed...

I believe the games will run on 32 and 64 bit OS's with no problem. It seems that, IMHO, if Galaxy support is added to a game . . . it kills the compatibility with XP and Vista (maybe that Galaxy is not supported). I assume adding code for Galaxy somehow breaks the XP / Vista compatibility.

Craft The World stopped working on XP after Galaxy support was added ( around ver 1.004 ???) hence my concern about these games running on XP.

What the error is saying is the game exe is not a recognized 32 bit application even though it installed on a 32 bit system with no errors. Nothing on the game card indicates a 64 bit OS is required.

In the description above there was indication that MS 2 might not have a problem. It installed but got the same error as MS 1 and MS 3. As Galaxy support is added to installers (not the Galaxy installer but game installers) I believe XP and Vista compatibility will be broken by the added code for Galaxy support. This is just my take on what I have experienced. This is of no importance other than games from GOG will, eventually, only run on Win 7 and up. It only affects those of us still gaming on XP / Vista boxes.

I will find an old Win 7 box for the kids to use at some point. =)

BananaJane: The irem bundle was a lot better

UnrealQuakie: Ok everyone I downloaded all the metal slugs and tested each of them

so far here is what you get

resolutions of 4k highest all games support

1 or 2 player, single player

online gog galaxy multiplayer ( metal slug 2 DOES NOT HAVE ONLINE only local 2 player and single player )

changeable button layouts for keyboard and controller and hori fight stick which I tested.

Metal slug 2 lags a lot just like the dotemu humble bundle version ( 1,3,4 do not lag )

metal slug 3 has unlock able gallery

all games support auto rapid fire so you don't need to spam the button to fire constantly, just hold down and spray :P

alt tab friendly

4:3 or 16:9 support options for monitor in menu

Scan line option 50%/ 100% makes it kinda look cool and not bad looking.

audio sounds just like original

no save states for in levels from what I tested. might have it but not sure.

all the games have a bit of an altered character selection screen ( these are Not original games ) these games are modified not emulators from the looks of it, If you want originals stick with the humble bundle versions or emulators.

last off is

I have to say these are amazing versions of the game, it has online single and multi with keybind and resolution options, so if you buy this you will be happy but if you are a purist and wan't the raw version of these games with the lag that the actual neo geo machines had then go with the humble bundle versions. I have 1,2,3 on original cartridge and I can confirm the lag that the humble bundle has is identical to the original cartridge.

NOW BUY IT! I will be online to play some games today so yeah!

BananaJane: What bout movelists? It's not worth buying unless it comes with visual movelists
what do you mean by movelists?

The performance issues I and others have are not related to the original hardware slowdown (Which BTW is another issue that any semi-competent emulator could counteract by overclocking the Neo-Geo's CPU) but to terrible emulation in general. The Slug games have constant stuttering, with dropped frames and after a bit more playtesting before I flat out gave up and uninstalled, input lag.

The blood is red at least.

Well thats disappointing. Those games are hard enough even without input lag. How bad is it?

At least in Metal Slug X you can rebind the controls, From my experience with the Steam version of Metal Slug 3 it's the same in that one.
Hey,

Imagine you're an old man who is not very good at video games. Do you think the Metal Slug games would be too hard for said old man?

I guess I am also wondering if I... I mean this old man... would need to play through the entire game in one sitting or whether he can get to a point and "save" or something? And is that a practical way of finishing the game.

I know one of my favourite games Gods had a system were you could enter level codes but that wasn't super practical as you then started the level with nothing. But that game was pretty short and not all that hard to complete.

Asking for a friend of mine who is an old man. Not me, that's for sure. I am young and very good at video games.... o_O

Thanks in advance!
