And it is a beautiful day for a letdown ladies and gentlemen here at the Crowdfunding Arena. In this corner we have the reigning champion, Double Fine's only original title that actually lives up to it's hype, Psychooooonauuuuuts! And in this corner is the young challenger, the sequel ten years too late and 3,300,000 $ short, Psychooooonauuuuts Twoooooo!

Seriously now, I love Psychonauts (although I have not played it in a loooong time), but I just don't think this is going to be as good. Even forgetting for a moment Double Fine's dubious history with crowdfunding, most of their games (Brutal Legend, Stacking, Broken Age, The Cave), while by no means bad, failed to live up to their promises, often fell very short indeed. Once the game is out I'll definately look into it, but untill then I have next to no enthusiasm.

tomimt: Well as far I know the budget for original Psychonaust was around 12 million dollars, which is around 15 million inflation adjusted
Recall that Notch once offered straight up to pay for Psychonauts 2 and asked Schafer to give him a ballpark figure, so Schafer said, "About $18 million." At which point Notch presumably did a comical spit take and awkwardly rescinded the offer.

hyperagathon: Right below the video you can see both GOG and DRM-free icons. Even Linux without anyone having to nudge them. Spacebase notwithstanding, I wish them good luck with this one. $3.3 million might be a touch high for these post-crowdfunding-disillusionment times.
Just pointing out that the GOG icon is gone and I can't find mention of it on the site. But they do mention DRM-free through Humble Bundle (only?) in the rewards. I'm not sure if that is a bad sign, or they are just not promising things they don't have in stone yet (no idea).
edit: Ah, I found a comment by GregRice confirming they will have a GOG release. Woot!

Despite the ill-will Double Fine / Time Schafer seem to have gathered (judging largely from this thread), I'll probably end up backing this and hoping.
If it's a flop, I'll be sad. But... I can't imagine anyone else was going to try and make the sequel (or could, legally) - so I might as well support them so they finally can try to make something to live up to the legacy.

Plus, I hope it shows strong support (with money, the loudest talker of all support types) for games that are creatively interesting (not cash grabs on trends), have cross-platform support, and DRM-free.

edit2: eeeewww... they are doing an exclusive title (PS4).

Half-way there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucBPih9D8yU

Out of all DF's games, this is the one I've wanted to happen the most. It's pretty awesome to see all the talent back for the sequel -- Peter Chan, Erik Wolpaw, Peter McConnell, the voice actors for Raz and Lily, etc.

As for money management, all game development is risky. Broken Age merely showed to the world what has been happening in game development pretty much all the time. For example, that's what happened to Wasteland 2 as well -- they couldn't finish the game with backer money alone, so InXile had to put their own money into it and it took longer as planned as well. Anyone who promises you that game development is a safe bet or a known quantity is either fooling you or themselves.

Giving money to him would be like lending money to Johhny boy.

At least the remakes are coming to PC the Psychonauts thingy is a PS VR title with no mention of it being anything else which sucks.

As to giving money to Shafer I'd say its obvious that Double Fine is not the best at project management so it is a risky purchase. Also I totally get how the stuff to do with spacebase enrages folk but thankfully I can say I have no bones in that game as it was steam only. If you want think of money put down as tantric gambling. Even a half arsed Psychonauts is a damned good game by my books.

Actually, the ninja squirrel might be right. I DID hit the reply button on your post, but decided against actually posting it.
Is it just me or does the crowdfunding site look a little dodgy?
While I admire the promise to come to GoG, I just can't support Tim Schafer... at least not until he proves he can handle money.

But hey, if it's good I'll buy it when it comes out. I'm not holding my breath though.

As far I know the site is a co-creation of people from inXile, Obisidian and Double Fine amonf some other studios that did well on crowdfunding previously. This is only their third project, of which the the first was a succesfully funded and the second didn't reach its target.
