The publisher explains the game will be better for it.

Publishers NIS America Inc. have decided to postpone the PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, which was originally planned for September 12.

In their note to the community they said:
"We regret to inform everyone that the release date for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA on PC has been pushed back due to continued efforts in improving gameplay quality.

We sincerely apologize to our fans who have been looking forward to this release. Ultimately, our goal is for fans to enjoy a high-quality game. We are providing the extra care in the PC development of the game by taking time to enhance the overall quality of gameplay."

Recently, they elaborated on what's holding back the release saying:
"We have been trying to resolve important gameplay issues that we feel would compromise the playability and stability of the game. Unfortunately, we were unable to fix those issues to our satisfaction before the launch.

The issues proved to be more complicated than we thought and we overestimated our ability to fix them in time. For that, we are truly sorry. We take full responsibility for these problems. Fans of this game and this series have let their expectations be known and we aim to achieve them.
[...]
First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:
- Random crashes
- Framerate
- Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.
[...]
We want to assure you that we are doing our very best to deliver a stable game for everyone who wants to play Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, regardless of platform.

Thank you very much.
NISA"

Anyone who has already pre-ordered the game on GOG.com and wishes to ask for a refund can contact our support team directly.

We will be updating this post with the new release date, once it is provided.

---Original post follows---

Alice3173: Gog and Steam I always go for Gog. Galaxy might need a bit more polish to be on par with Steam as a client but their service is far superior regardless.
'nuff said. It all boils down to, uh, "patience is a great virtue", heh.
Take care!

Reglisse: No worry...It's just to give time exclusivity to PS4...

It's disappointing but I can wait.

Gurlok: Another move made by sony you mean? While that can be completely possible, I wonder if it's the true reason, this time around.
I doubt this. Ys isn't exactly what you'd call a YUGE franchise. If I were Sony, I'd save that for the bigger guns, not some random niche JRPG. Besides, it's not the first time a game would launch here and on PS4 at the same time (Sine Mora EX comes to mind immediately).
So NISA say GOG's version has gone live and it is only the Steam version that is being delayed. GOG has not put up it's download options yet. Beta testers say that the PC port is buggy and unoptimized.

Steam version to get Denuvo? NISA have NFI?

What a clusterfuck all around...

Update: Following GOG's confirmation that its version of Ys Eight would be delayed as well, NIS America said in an email that it would actually release on schedule—that is, today—and that only the Steam edition has been pushed back. And the game is in fact still available for purchase on GOG. I have reached out to all involved for more information, and will update yet again if and when the situation becomes even more confusing.

The Steam version, by the way, no longer indicates a 2017 release, but now says simply that it's "coming soon."
And in the comments...

Quick update on the situation: Steam version was pushed back, but GOG version went live. GOG said the delay notification was delayed (seriously) and that their release was being pushed back too. Few hours later, NISA said GOG version is good to go, only Steam is delayed. GOG remains available for purchase, Steam is now "coming soon."

I dunno wtf anymore.

This looks like a huge cluster.

Wonder if any GOG reps can tell us just what's going on.

As much as I'd love to see a DRM free version of the game go live before the DRM infected one, releasing a buggy mess isn't gonna help anyone.

We just have to wait and see what they'll do.

The game is delayed to work out bugs. It's that simple. The game can technically be bought and it'll become available in your library if you buy it, but the profile won't contain any working links, nor will Galaxy allow you to install it. So you can neither download nor install the game yet, seeing that it got held back.
Japan's Mafioso strikes again!

I was actually about to buy this game today even for a very high price of $59 but now because of Sony tactics I'm all set and thanks.

I still remember my beloved PSO 2 not being released in the west; Japan!

P.s. I've just noticed it's a "Day One Edition" on PS4's game box.

If you read earlier on the page, that's apparently not actually the case:

According to this information, it should already be available on Gog and there was simply a miscommunication somewhere along the line. But we can't be sure for certain until one of Gog's representatives gets back to us on it.
Can somebody tell me clearly, if the game is playable right now on gog? I dont want to buy it if it's not avaliable to play...

It is definitely not playable right now. There are no download links in the library. The install button is greyed out in Galaxy.

What I mean is "why is NISA saying GOG's release is up as scheduled while GOG is saying it's also been delayed. Look at Bigs' post before my last.

Hah hah, what the fuck. I've never seen such a label on a retail/console game box. Trying hard to coax people into pre-ordering/ buying early, I see.

They should call it the "dolt edition", since people who pre-order pretty much universally get the worst deal. You pay the highest price, and half of the time you'll end up with an unfinished or broken mess, since you don't get the chance to read the post-release reviews before spending your money.

In thias case, I'm not sure I agree. Games like this aren't going to get a heavy print run, so if you want a physical copy, pre-ordering is pretty much the only way in many cases. And honestly, anyone who's never seen "Day One Edition" on boxes hasn't been buying a lot of games or perusing a lot of stores. It's not SUPER common, but I've been seeing it a lot on games, and judging by the fact I see it on boxes months after release, I can't say it's especially effective.
