The publisher explains the game will be better for it.

Publishers NIS America Inc. have decided to postpone the PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, which was originally planned for September 12.

In their note to the community they said:
"We regret to inform everyone that the release date for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA on PC has been pushed back due to continued efforts in improving gameplay quality.

We sincerely apologize to our fans who have been looking forward to this release. Ultimately, our goal is for fans to enjoy a high-quality game. We are providing the extra care in the PC development of the game by taking time to enhance the overall quality of gameplay."

Recently, they elaborated on what's holding back the release saying:
"We have been trying to resolve important gameplay issues that we feel would compromise the playability and stability of the game. Unfortunately, we were unable to fix those issues to our satisfaction before the launch.

The issues proved to be more complicated than we thought and we overestimated our ability to fix them in time. For that, we are truly sorry. We take full responsibility for these problems. Fans of this game and this series have let their expectations be known and we aim to achieve them.
[...]
First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:
- Random crashes
- Framerate
- Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.
[...]
We want to assure you that we are doing our very best to deliver a stable game for everyone who wants to play Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, regardless of platform.

Thank you very much.
NISA"

Anyone who has already pre-ordered the game on GOG.com and wishes to ask for a refund can contact our support team directly.

We will be updating this post with the new release date, once it is provided.

---Original post follows---

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is now available for pre-order on GOG.com. Grab it now to get three DLC for free: Adol's Adventure Essentials, a Mini Art Book, and a Soundtrack Sampler.
Ready for a new round of exciting, party-based trouble? Adol and co. get stranded on a mysterious island where ferocious beasts roam. When a blue-haired beauty starts calling to our hero in his dreams, it's time for them to build a village and set out to undo the island's curse.

The free DLC offer will last for one week after release.

With the delay, does that mean the free bonus samplers and "dlc" will be available until later, as well?
Yeah, i'd much rather this have a stable release than a buggy one. Good on them for delaying.

Gurlok: I'm more worried about how the port will turn out. I mean, until now (steam side) we received the most famous NIS games such as Disgaeas, Phantom brave and the likes which don't require extra work, as they are light games, but this is the first "heavy" port made from NISA.
Well... I don't know about Phantom Brave, but Disgaea PC is a broken mess without "Pretty Prinny" unofficial patch.

Gurlok: I really love how XSeed put their efforts in translations and features (I remember how some Ys and Trails games had some features added exclusive to the west releases). Still what I find funny is that this time around we are getting the Japanese voices for this game. The majority of the times XSeeds localize a game, they don't keep the japanese voices, unfortunately.

Erpy: XSeed has quite a few games where they kept the Japanese voices in, like Corpse Party (they stated they keep them in whenever they're an option), it's just that most of the games the localizer is known for around these parts were all made by the same company around the same time period. (that is, before the western market became worth paying attention to, even Cold Steel was developed before Trails in the Sky FC made waves on Steam and Gog) The VA contracts of those games were never written up with an international release in mind and couldn't be renegotiated. An important reason Ys VIII has Japanese voices in the west is because Falcom was already keeping an international release in mind when they cast the local voice actors.

Anyway, during Cold Steel 1's release, there were several purists rooting for Falcom to give its games to NISA from now on, so the games would have higher odds of having Japanese audio even if it resulted in a localization of lesser quality. From what I've heard, the localization and the dub ARE more bland than what XSeed would usually produce, so it looks like said purists got their wish. Time will tell how noticable the localization and technical aspect/support differ.
Well here's the thing: Falcom's prez stated in a video there is nothing that restricts the release of jp audio outside of Japan on any of their games, so it must be smth other (money?). Hell, you can buy any game from them and they will ship it anywhere in the world.

On topic: delaying a release date ON a release date is a very proffesional behaviour indeed..

Meanwhile, XSEED representative said:
Falcom is pretty much a no across the board -- licensing-wise, we're never able to include Japanese voices in Falcom games. We've tried, every time, but we always hit a wall.
if you have no idea what something is about, then it is about money.

I imagine Aksys isn't as big company as Xseed and yet even they secured jp audio for Tokyo Xanadu...
Delaying literally on the day of release is horrid planning on NIS' part. If the delay is big enough that they can't even give an estimate on it then they surely could have seen it coming at least a day or two in advance rather than dropping this on people when they're expecting to be able to go and actually install the damned game.
Erm is GOG sure this game is actually delayed?

Update: Following GOG's confirmation that its version of Ys Eight would be delayed as well, NIS America said in an email that it would actually release on schedule—that is, today—and that only the Steam edition has been pushed back. And the game is in fact still available for purchase on GOG. I have reached out to all involved for more information, and will update yet again if and when the situation becomes even more confusing.
The Steam version, by the way, no longer indicates a 2017 release, but now says simply that it's "coming soon."

that's awful weird.

as for me: now there's more time to actually finish Ys III on the Genesis/Mega Drive ;P
But yeah, I kinda agree with ya. Delaying on release day won't please folks around but if it's for tinkering purposes I guess we can agree with Miyamoto-san rightey?! ;P

For me it's quite irritating because I'd decided to get it now instead of waiting on it since I knew Ys SEVEN was definitely not going to last me to the 26th when Danganronpa 3 gets released. (Though to be fair, VIII probably wouldn't either honestly.) I wouldn't mind quite so much but waiting literally until the day of release to announce a delay is very poor planning at best.

Hopefully we can get an update regarding BKGaming's linked article though. Really sucks for Steam users if it's in fact true. Though luckily for me when given a choice between Gog and Steam I always go for Gog. Galaxy might need a bit more polish to be on par with Steam as a client but their service is far superior regardless.
Given that they are supposedly "working on enhancing the gameplay quality", that delay should affect all versions of the game. On PC, anyway... Which is weird, because those supposed "gameplay improvements" should affect console versions as well.

Most likely they just ran into severe bugs with their PC version. Or, less likely, they spontaneously decided to add some DRM like Denuvo to the Steam version. ( Which would be weird, when they're also planning to offer it here, DRM-free. )
ROFL, from first reply in that article: "GOG said the delay notification was delayed"

Rimmer: Was there any damage?
Holly: I don't know. The damage report machine has been damaged.
