System Shock 2 was originally released in 1999 and this cult classic sci-fi horror FPS with RPG elements has become widely considered as one of the best video games of all time.

Now, from the hands of Nightdive Studios, the System Shock® 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is available for pre-order on GOG!

With the goal of reverse engineering the original code to port SS2 to the KEX Engine, this upcoming title will let us enjoy the legendary game from almost 25 years ago, all with cinematics, textures, characters and weapon models updated, and the Co-Op Multiplayer overhauled to create a seamless experience.

Pre-order now on GOG!

FarkOfDoge: So exactly how much did they "borrow"/"reverse engineer" from the fan mod forum?
Not that much. They did a lot of work on lots of other textures, lightning, entirely new animations of loading, eggs opening and location based damage (!!!) at least with robots, which seems cool. And it seems they did some touch-up even on the textures they actually used.

Also, they fixed the muzzle flash resolution of the original.
And if they finally fixed the co-op multiplayer (the original was kinda hacky and unfinished), that´s a carrot on a stick of its own.
Not to mention release on all the console platforms - so yeah, they did a lot.

And yes, I do hope this one will sell well (SS2 deserves to have a recognition, even years later), and I do hope for a remake AND the SS3 finally.

DNMR2K5: So I'm guessing that if you bought it outright without preordering it, you'll get the game free as well as those who preordered it?
avatar
FarkOfDoge: From the image linked above it would seem it might be for SS1 preorders only.
Thanks for the answer, yeah, here's hoping that I did preorder it, because I honestly forgot if I did or not… Thankfully I don't feel entitled to getting a free sequel for buying the original, so I don't hold it against them if I have to buy it outright instead of getting it for free, sure it sucks, but there are far more shittier things in life to worry about, so more power to them either way!

EDIT: Thinking on this further, it would make no sense to them for giving out a free game for those that didn't preorder it, as the perk would hurt less with preorders than outright purchases as outright purchases number far more than preorders!

*checks page* Location based and they got a few of the modders to do additional work as well? Noice

Edward_Carnby: What about those who pre ordered System Shock Remake ?

We were promised this remaster for free.
is it still a thing ?

Lord_Kane: Yes a moderator on the discord said that if we preordered/backed SS1 RM regardless of service we are still getting it, it should get listed BEFORE release on our libraries.
Yeah, I had been wondering that myself. I bought it on pre-order here on GOG.

ThatGuyWithTheThing: How do we join this Discord server? I don't know if I ever got an email. Maybe I didn't, or maybe it went straight to spam.

Anyone know what the pre-requisites are?
Its just the normal NDS discord invite provided:

Oh, I thought you meant the GOG server :P

Thanks for the Nightdive one, though!

FarkOfDoge: So exactly how much did they "borrow"/"reverse engineer" from the fan mod forum? Cuz some of the updated textures(like the eggs) look eerily like some fan mods out there.
Some textures are different but the "remastered" ones are often hardly that much better (I tried to get a shot of the same area, from the same angle, with the same weapon):-

'Remaster' vs Original with texture mod.

I wouldn't exactly say there's been a +500% improvement in graphics to justify that +500% increase in price vs what the mod community did for free a decade ago... ;-)

And some analysis of what was changed...

Agreed. Still, given how much of a "fan" of that game I am I still wants it I do.

Wouldn't that be 200% increase in the price not 500%? Think the percentage is little off.
overpriced ND release

"Pre-order now and receive System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition for free once it's released!"

I was comparing the current sale prices (£3.49 vs £21.59).

Which I would second that it is the right thing to do - there is probably no one left that is willing to buy the game outside of a sale.
Around 30€ (without discount) seems to be the standardized price for these remasters, I'd say they're overpriced but not terribly so, I can pay around 20 just fine just to have a version with all the mods baked in, as long as they keep the original feel of the game
