System Shock 2 was originally released in 1999 and this cult classic sci-fi horror FPS with RPG elements has become widely considered as one of the best video games of all time.

Now, from the hands of Nightdive Studios, the System Shock® 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is available for pre-order on GOG!

With the goal of reverse engineering the original code to port SS2 to the KEX Engine, this upcoming title will let us enjoy the legendary game from almost 25 years ago, all with cinematics, textures, characters and weapon models updated, and the Co-Op Multiplayer overhauled to create a seamless experience.

Pre-order now on GOG!
A bit pricey. Maybe someday, but I was never the biggest SS2 fan, so I can wait for the price to come down after its release.

While SS2 is fun in its own right, I still think the original is the better game of the two. *shrug*

Syphon72: Wouldn't that be 200% increase in the price not 500%? Think the percentage is little off.

AB2012: I was comparing the current sale prices (£3.49 vs £21.59).
Still little less than 500% but close. Agree with no one probably buy the game full price. At least on PC.

Memecchi: Yes, they've said as much, this remaster is pretty much built on free mods and "Nightdive own improvements", that's the opposite of being dishonest lol

BrianSim: Great, so are they going to donate some of the money to the unpaid modders & texture artists who actually did most of the work for which the Kex Engine is just a 'wrapper' around, or just the usual?...

AB2012: It gets even more blatant in some areas.

BrianSim: I think I've long given up on even this classic gaming GOG community having any remaining shred of integrity when they start cheering on screwing other people over due to being too lazy to unzip a zip file and can no longer even wipe their own arses without a walled garden client doing it for them...
The problem is that these mods were done for free, written by fairly anonymous designers that may or may not still be in the modding scene (let alone be contacted). What's more, many of these modders did it thinking that they would never receive a dime for their work, doing it mainly for the love of the game or to improve their coding prowess (this looks great on a CV, especially if the modder is trying to apply to a game company).

It might not be right in our eyes but if Nightdive acknowledges the original mods and modders as the basis for their remaster in the credits than that would be considered good enough. (Again, it's not ideal but it would be more than a lot of modders would have ever gotten from developers.)

I seriously doubt they would use so many mods without having explicit permission, and modders don't have to ask for compensation you know? that's up to them, some may be happy just being in the credits

And even beyond that, modding is a grey area in the first place, for example Bethesda literally owns the right for every mod developed with the creation kit for TES or Fallout
Did they take out the excellent (but incredibly buggy) co-op multiplayer? I was hoping that would be fixed in this remaster.
Been years since the announcement... Kickstarter? huh
I've tried to make 2nd playthrough with mods few times since... almost forever.
Guess this might be good time...

BrianSim: if you've been playing the original + texture mods for years, it's painfully obvious where a lot of "remastered" content is ripped off from the free mods.

AB2012: It gets even more blatant in some areas. Example - take the hackable Security Consoles:-]
This is pretty bad if the HD mod gives you the same experience with zero costs. I wonder why ND just didn't do a remake like with the first game. Maybe they didn't get approval to do it.
Having played modded SS2 a lot back in 2011 I can certify the following:

SS2 had a dedicated mod manager already back in 2011 (SS2BMM, now succeded by DMM, that already allowed engine updates and integrated mod management). Install DMM today on your copy of SS2 and you will be able to benefit from fan-made engine improvements (SS2 Community Patch), in addition to seamless modding installation. Don't know what they will be doing with the remaster, but it'll be hard to top that, especially if the Kex engine ends up requiring mods being packaged differently, or introducing compatibility problems with DMM which may or may not be solvable.

The remaster seems to have HEAVILY borrowed from certain community mods, namely SHTUP-ND (High-resolution textures, although there are some minimal differences from screenshoots), various object improvements from a modder named Vurt, and lastly revised weapon models from a mod named Tacticool Complete. By borring heavily I mean it's almost the same, minus some touchups. Only relevant difference seems to be that they added weapon animations when equipping/reloading, and actually introduced the character's left hand when wielding the pump shotgun (Original had a non-animated deelay with each shot, but no visible pump-action reload animation)

There appear to be some lighting/shader differences, although it's way too early to say what the end result will be.

NightDive seems hell bent on using their own Kex Engine, while fanmade NewDark engine is already available (SS2 on both GOG and other storefronts already ship with NewDark by default). Don't know why they continue insisting with this policy where Kex Engine is used as a wrapper for the original game's binary when it already failed spectacularly with Blood.

Honestly it's looking like a cashgrab, but we'll have to wait and see.
What the heck is this terrible blinking green text on the game page? Bloody unreadable...
