Yes, and it's exactly games like that I'm looking for, preferably available on GOG but SNES works as well. Already got the Donkey Kong games of course :-)

There are two Earthworm Jim games on GOG. Also I've heared a lot of good things about Freedom Planet and Shovel Knight (though haven't time to play). And I would also recommend "Beyond Good and Evil" as 3D platfomer with some interesting bosses. Btw if you are not squeamish to use Uplay, BGaE will be avaliable there for free a couple of days later.

Alien Soldier. On steam, or emulate yourself for genesis/megadrive. Enough boss battles to last a lifetime.

EDIT: On second thought, this is not a platformer, but still...

LootHunter: What do you mean by great and original? Pretty much all popular old platformer series (like Sonic the Hedgehog, Donky Kong Country, Earthworm Jim, etc) had some bosses that couldn't be taken heads on and required special tactics and skills.

zeogold: It's worth mentioning that the Wario Land series of games had some pretty unique boss fights (as well as unique game mechanics in general), but then, those aren't on SNES or GOG. Geralt_of_Rivia

muntdefems: Hahahaha, was about to post just the same as you! Epic (and catchy) ending song indeed. :D
"Now you're a hero
You managed to
beat the whole damn ga-ame.
We're happy you made it,
but how are you gonna spend the rest of this da-ay?"
You got me curious so I had to try that out, too. "Now you're a hero

Yeah, the ending song is fun but not very original.

omega64: There's a very very hard area in the game that gives you a reward you'll wish you could disable. ;)
What is the reward? All Rayman games I think, minimally Rayman 3: The Great Escape.
Also Croc: The Legend of Gobbos and Croc 2. Really fun games!
Also the Castlevania games, but with those it's about figuring out how to avoid the enemy attacks and being able to know when they're going to happen, which is possible with various attacks due to the attacking animation when it starts up.

I found the Shantae games to be a lot of fun with exceptional boss battles, especially in 'Pirate's Curse'.
Freedom Planet is an unforgettable must-play you won't regret.
