yeah this amoeba is common, but infections are rare and require specific circumstances in order to happen, you apparently drink them all the time, I think infection occurs with a combination of being forced up the nose + a weak immune system.

Lord_Kane: a combination of being forced up the nose + a weak immune system.
So Tauto should be fine because the amoeba would have to get past his finger.

i once saw on TV a man who had an open wound and flies deposited eggs there, then those worms coming out of the eggs, they got in his blood veins! there was video with a worm traveling under the transparent skin of his eye! that's just crazy. but at least he didn't die - i guess he took antibiotics
Just to be safe we should all hide in the Gamergate thread.

Oh yeah, hide from a brain devouring monstrosity into a toxic deathhole. Brilliant.

Or the Brexit thread. There are no brains in there for the amoeba to eat.

Randalator: I have a sinking feeling that cases of brain-eating amoeba are much more common than we think but that they usually simply don't result in death...
Since 1962, there have been around 130 infections in the US. Mode of infection is pretty freaky; it moves up the nasal cavity and into the brain. Best way to avoid infection: wear nose plugs. (I'm not kidding).
The bigger question is what were the parents doing ?

They failed to give their child proper life, good food, and a healthy future.

Someone should hold the parents accountable too for this neglect.

apehater: so only the smart ones survive, mostly because of their giant brain size?

Randalator: That's not exactly what I was shooting at...
Is this a Brexit plug ? don t you dare ! ;)

apehater: link to article: ohio teen dies from brain-eating amoeba

i'm surprised that such creatures really exist. well, now i know where the futurama writers got their idea for brain slugs.
Sounds unpleasant. But then there are actually parasites that can influence their host's behaviour (at least it's been proven for mice, but seems likely it also applies to humans). In a way that's even more scary...just imagine, your personality changed by some parasite you'll probably never even know about.

So... beer is a parasite?
What? Oh. Amoeba ate his brain, not his brain ate amoeba.

dtgreene: Please don't link to sites that auto-play video.
You can change configuration in your browser, so that it asks for your permition to use Adobe Flash.
That way, you'll have 2 options when you visit a page:
Allow this time, and, allow and memorise.
If you don't want to watch videos, simply ignore, the video won't play unless you allow it.
I'm not sure if you can do this in other browsers, but in Firefox is possible.

Relevant comic (though not entirely true, as is explained in the comments, it's still funny).
