Is Shogo any good? Looks like a typical 90's shooter, and I'm very fond of those :D

Good luck with Activision...
Yeah, I probably should've mentioned the fact that LoG was rather light on plot didn't make the game as engaging as might otherwise have... not to mention exploring those claustrophobic corridors just got old after a few hours - perhaps the sequel fixes some of these things?

Lands of Lore sounds like it might be my best bet, so I think I'll definitely try that at some point instead. Thanks, all.

In certain ways, it's not really that typical, but it's great, if you can get into it.
It's core draw is the dual gameplay, where some levels have you control a giant mech and others are simply on foot. They essentially control the same, but the styles are rather different: in the mech levels, you stomp through cities with monstrous weapons and make things explode pretty much everywhere you go. It feels great and the Godzilla-style scale makes it quite unique.
The "human-sized" levels are a bit more typical shooter fare. You have a lot less health, one-hit kills can happen fairly often if you're not on your toes and the arsenal is relatively straightforward for the most part; with uzis, shotguns, assault rifles and the like. Lighting fast reactions are key here.
The game also utilizes a fairly interesting "critical hit" mechanic. Every once in a while, you'll score critical hits on your enemies, which will damage them more and give you a bit of health. That's why there aren't too many health-items in the game. The trade-off is that enemies can also do this to you.

Shogo was actually one of the first FPS games to be heavily story-based, complete with cutscenes. Granted, it's a somewhat simple and often silly story, but rather charming. Overall, it also wears the anime-aesthetic quite well, with a lot of attention to detail, right down to an intro with a song in Japanese.

It's heavily flawed, however. A lot of the graphics are pretty ugly, even for their time; and it is insanely unfair, so you'll make heavy use of the quicksave key. Yet for those who can get past that, it is one of the most intriguing games out there. It simply works for some reason and it ultimately became one of my all-time favourite games after I discovered it here on GOG, but it's hard to explain why, exactly.

Shogo is a lot of fun! If you like FPS games and mechs you should definitely give it a try! It also has an interesting anime/cyberpunk motif. It's a shame that it was completely overshadowed by Half-life.

Thanks! I added it to cart now. I'm not into anime at all, but I do love a good shooter :) Looking at the screenshots, it also seems similar to Half-Life, which is always a good thing.

The whole interplay spiel with Parallax will snowball cause other studios will come up to the plate and say where the hell is my monies/royalties and then eliminate agreements

Your downvoted interplay thread wasn't enough?

Ooooooh if it does...

By the way, did you ever get Starfleet Command to run? Despite wanting this game to come here (and nearly picking up a physical disc via Amazon once or twice) and flipping out when it did finally get here, I DIDN'T buy it until today LOL.

So if you haven't been able to get it up and running shoot me a PM with your speccs - I'm not going to fire it up just yet for a playthrough, but if we have similar setups I'll play around with trying to get it to work and hopefully be able to help (though I'm no computer expert so hopefully it isn't anything too complicated!).

It took a while, and I had to search through a lot of forums, but I finally got it to work. It looks like the game only defaults to hardware mode, and apparently it has a lot of trouble working on Windows 7 (it creates a black screen). I tried software mode, but then it was limited to 800x600 in full screen mode.

So I manually edited the sfc.ini file to force both software mode and windowed mode at the same time and the game finally runs! But it's too bad that the hardware mode doesn't want to work, since software mode runs a lot slower.

Good to hear you have it up and running... and I think I'll have to keep your post in mind as I'm running Win 7 too!
Reminder: Game Informer's Super Replay of "Cyberia" is great -

I assume it's genuinely easier to play with a computer mouse than a PS controller.

Well, you know, someone who's been here since mid-2011 probably hasn't noticed yet that we have this very same Interplay promo every few months.
Happy new year.

So I was messing around with this a little bit and at least on my setup, like you I also had to use Software Mode. HOWEVER I set software by running the config file and made sure to use software.

THEN I did an edit of the sfc.ini (I left windowed mode set to 0) and under

[3D]

lowres=5

gets me a higher resolution than 800X600. From the main screens it looks like the game might be forced into a bracket window, but once in game / battle it actually fills the whole screen. You might want to give it a shot.

As an aside, I don't know if it matters (I'm guessing not since I'm in software mode?) but under my GPU settings I have mine set up to preserve aspect ratio.

Keep in mind I didn't play the game, I just fired up a skirmish to see how it looked and ensure that it was running but if you want to try and squeeze out something a bit prettier than 800X600 give it a shot!
