Maighstir: On the other hand, Umbra seems very much to be an indie title, "despite" using CryEngine 3.
avatar
Johnathanamz: I know Lichdom: Battlemage and Umbra are not AAA video games, but I will refer to them as AAA video games for using a AAA video game engine. Problem?
You may, of course, call them anything you wish. But for the sake of understanding each other, I would propose that the engine used shouldn't factor in to how one refers to the game itself.

Sure, there probably aren't many "AAA" games running on RPG Maker, RenPy, or Unity (though the latter seem to be getting more traction lately), but lately some "AAA" engines have got lower prices specifically in order to become more viable alternatives for indie developers (that usually don't have as much funding as "AAA" developers).

Smannesman: Well I wouldn't call Lichdom a AAA title and except for W3 all the other ones dropped an A in their old age.
avatar
Johnathanamz: I say Lichdom: Battlemage is a AAA video game because it was developed using CryEngine, which is a AAA video game engine.
When using terms, it may be first a good idea to understand what they mean... Wikipedia is a good start.

Hint - it has nothing to do with the engine used.

Should all games running on Unreal be called AAA also?

nes400: pls GOG make it happen hit the 3000 games mark in your catalog and demolish Steam i know only you could
GOG Galaxy seams a lot cleaner and more fresh even in Beta stages than the Steam Menu
cant wait to see GOG's Achivements menu :P
Please don't. We're a bit over 1100 games right now. To get to 3000 quickly they would need to follow the (awful) Steam release schedule. (allow everything).

quality over quantity.. got to agree
GOG ROCKS!!

...seriously tho. I've been a huge fan of Steam for quite a while now. Download client, sign-in... ... check e-mail address for confirmation code... download game! But GOG has them beat with DRM-free titles. By a landslide in my book.

I know it doesn't. Now leave me alone and let me think whatever I want to think. Also it's my opinions. If you don't like what I say, then pray it becomes a law for stuff that I say to become illegal and get me arrested. Haha.

Free Speech. Do read the alt text.
It's a great dream, but a dream all the same.

I am obviously no fan of Steam and want to see GoG succeed as much as possible against them but the fact is quarterly Steam sales are enough to keep the vast majority of users from acknowledging the cage and nonexistent customer support that comes with Steam's low prices.

The thing mid range AAA developers who can't fund their own platforms like EA or Ubisoft have to realize is they are simply leaving money on the table when it comes to DRM. After buying Far-Cry 3 and not seeing the hidden tag for Uplay on Steam and being unable to get a refund, I simply will never buy another Ubisoft product again. Period. Games are cracked the first week they come out. Developers are wasting their own time and money to deliver an inferior product meanwhile ensuring interested paying customers will not buy their DRM infested product.

I hope GoG can make the case for the financial rewards awaiting those that leave DRM behind and bring more developers into their catalog. I myself have re-bought games (I already own) here simply so I don't have to run them through Steam.

Off course you can say what you want. But just understand that when you do say things like this, then people will giggle at you and not take you very seriously. But if that is how you will like to come across, that's fine by me.

I never took the time to check that definition, but now I find it cruelly lacking (in its Wikipedia form). As I understand it, it just states that games can be shovelware or AAA, which is an extremely broad definition.
I think the actual acceptation of the term encompass big budget/manpower/marketing, high end assets. I would like to say it relates to 'high added value' videogames, but by their nature every digital media product have high added value to begin with.

most gamers even on here have a steam account..
but with the Galaxy around corner many will jump the bandwagon to GOG

Here's my view: we need both GOG and Steam for competition. GOG shouldn't have a monopoly either.

Actually, AAA can be showelvare.... AAA refers only to production value and promotional cost.
