Fairfox: GOGie Connect
Can't you type properly instead of a brain damaged idiot?

News flash, lolspeak is funny when you're 5, for everyone else it's annoying and painful to read and you sound like a retard.

neurasthenya: How is not getting a game being punished? :v
Where does anybody mention being punished?
avatar
Eitot: They really should fix the headline, it is definitely ambiguous. I cannot stand this sort of clickbait or misleading advertising. It is as bad as saying FREE* or 0,-* in an advert.
avatar
Prolence: While I agree that it could be a bit clearer, but honestly I'm not sure what there is to fix?

I mean, it states that it's a free copy with GOG Connect, which isn't wrong or misleading. You don't have to pay any extra to get the GOG copy if you already own it on steam. Also it states that it's available through GOG Connect which, when clicked on, explains the service to those who are unfamiliar with it. Also I don't see how it's clickbait at all, especially when it is exactly as stated in the banner.
Of course, if you know the jargon it is technically correct and the link does explain what needs to be done if your attention was captured. I am not arguing about that. I say that the wording on the front page is ambiguous enough to be misconstrued on first reading, giving the impression that something is gained for free. People will respond to this and may end up being disappointed that they understood the sentence wrong.

It is not really ‘free’ even for customers that are eligible, as they already own the game anyway. Also consider that not every visitor may know about GOG Connect or understand English well.

Why not simply be clearer? ‘Activate your Steam copy of LIMBO for free with GOG Connect’. ‘Connect your Steam library and import your copy of LIMBO with GOG Connect’. Lots of better wordings are possible. The point of the offer is to invite people to connect their Steam library and activate their LIMBO game, so it should say that without using unnecessary jargon.

Erm... I also don't know. Brainfart. :v
I'll blame my sobriety.

I completely agree that it could have been clearer, I was just a bit confused about using the types of words like 'clickbait' or 'misleading advertising' when that really isn't the case. A bit vague but in no way misleading as long as people read through it as a whole, at least in my opinion.

While I agree that it isn't necessarily really 'free' in a sense of having to own a copy already, it also could have been completely free as it was offered as a free game to everybody interested on steam not too long ago. Technically it's a free copy of GOG version if used GOG Connect service, as advertised.
(As a side note, more or less irrelevant in this case of course)

Don't get me wrong, I do agree with you to an extent and in this case I can understand people who don't necessarily understand the concept behind GOG Connect. I just asked for the sake of conversation and getting better understanding about what you meant with that. Thank you for taking your time to further elaborate (I hope it means what I think it means, pardon my english).

Agree to disagree, I have a very low tolerance for this and I find it misleading. I see nothing wrong with the words I used, I did not use them in any legal or qualifying sense, nor implied malice. The sentence is meant to persuade people to click on the link and it contains misleading language that can imply a reward.
I agree the wording isn't the best; kinda fast and loose with the meaning of "free."

Should have said something like "Now you can use GOG Connect to add Limbo from your Steam library."
For people who are wondering what's so special about this, LIMBO was just released on GOG. Most games that are offered on GOG Connect have been out for a while, like the Witcher games available now.

dwgog: @Trilarion:
I'm guessing they'll want credit card info, which they won't get. But I'll look into it.

@Alaric.us:
But they are. Look at the banner at the top of the black friday sale. Says they are giving them Limbo free.

There is a possibility I'm misinterpreting, but their wording certainly sounds like they're giving it away free.

@GOG: could you clarify?
Yes, the wording is confusing, it would have been better to say Reclaim you steam copy of limbo here free. I also thought it was a 'free' game, took me a minute to figure out what they were saying.

mintee: ... took me a minute to figure out what they were saying.
Well, you figured it out your confusion pretty damn fast didn't you? :p
avatar
Randalator: I'm sorry, the banner clearly says "Get LIMBO for free with GOG Connect". That isn't misleading in the slightest - it's just what it says on the tin.
Which suggested to me that they were offering an incentive to fire up GOG Connect for those of us who still don't have any games to cross over. That's how I found this thread - to see if I was doing something wrong. Limbo wasn't free on Steam, it wasn't showing up after I set it up...

This is the point you're missing:

Starmaker: I absolutely do not subscribe to the notion that GOG Connect somehow unfair to existing users, but the wording on the front page is bad and people are justified in feeling overhyped.
The complaint isn't that a pretty but just passable game isn't free, it's that the way it was presented was confusing and bordering on bullshit. They even use the same "Claim your copy now" wording that they use when they *are* giving away a free game.

Unfortunately it wasn't really pointed out by GOG. They helped a lot in creating this confusion with a misleading headline (which GOG even doesn't bother to change) so KingBradley is not the only one who got confused. We wouldn't need the whole discussion if the PR department of GOG wouldn't be so awful. I'm disappointed (again) in GOG.
I remember trying to play this game after hearing all the hype and it boring the fuck out of me.

Anyways it clearly says with GOG connect and clicking "claim your copy now" brings me to the GOG connect page so I fail to see how this is misleading.
I thought it was misleading. Gog gives away free games during sales all the time, so I saw the banner, clicked on it, only for Connect to tell me I couldn't have it because I didn't own it on Steam.

Now I own hundreds of games on Steam and I know what connect is because I've claimed a good dozen or so games with it, but even I thought (and still think) that click here for a free games, means exactly that.

Now, do I think that they intended to be deceptive? No, I don't. But that is very badly worded in a way that deceived me and others it seemed.

Could be that they don't want to mention their direct competitor on the main page too loudly, as if advertising it. They have "hidden" the mention of the competing service to the instructions. If these hapless people saw Steam mentioned on the main page, it might even give them the wrong idea that GOG is selling/delivering Steam keys.

I think the banner is fine: it tells you can get an extra GOG copy of LIMBO with GOG Connect. If you don't know what GOG Connect is (ie. a way to get selected games from your Steam account to appear also on your GOG account), then that should become clear when you click on that banner.

Services like GOG Connect are a bit tricky to advertise right, so that you don't end up promoting the competing service. After all, we have seen also here some Steamheads snarkily commenting how it now makes even less sense to buy games on GOG (instead of Steam) because you can get the GOG copy "for free" anyway through GOG Connect. You know, like those "Great, another game for GOG Connect"-comments in the GOG game release threads.

I think that is also why these GOG Connect campaigns are only very limited time (during which you have to activate any eligible Steam games on GOG), and only for selected few games. Obviously the idea is not that people would end up buying their games on Steam in hopes of getting GOG versions for free on top of it, but a way to lure Steam people, who otherwise don't hang around too much on the GOG site, to come visit and check out the GOG site once in a while (if they care at all to receive a copy also on the GOG service).

I normally don't care for 2D platformers anymore, but for some reason LIMBO was able to hold my attention when I played through it 2-3 years ago or so. It is not a long game, I think I started it one day and finished it the second day, same as with Portal (the Valve game), even though I am generally quite a slow player. I think the length of the game was fine, not too short.
