Some characters change in different translations. May also be different in American and British English.

From Wikipedia, the two names are used in the same paragraph, but I can't find anything telling that they are alternative names of the same chartacter:
... British names end in "-ax" and are often puns on the taxation associated with the later United Kingdom, such as Valuaddedtax the druid and Selectivemploymentax the mercenary ... Most of these jokes, and hence the names of the characters, are specific to the translation, for example, the druid Getafix is Panoramix in the original French and Miraculix in German ...
Interestingly, the name Valuaddedtax isn't mentioned at all in the list of Asterix characters, though it lists a few other names for the same character that have been used in English translations.

Palpatine's first name doesn't help him much either. Sheev. Sheev Palpatine. Well, I guess it's still better than the Emperor's name from the original draft- Cos Dashit.

Seriously, sometimes I think it's a miracle the original Star Wars turned out as good as it did.

Thanks -- I know the names change according to the various languages, and I have heard of the French Panoramix, but of course they have to, otherwise the name puns wouldn't really make much sense.

That explains it. And with a better source as well, awesome.
I did find it odd that Valueaddedtax was mentioned a couple times on Wikipedia's main Asterix page, but had no explanation on who he is.

This thing with the fictional names is one of the many reasons why I didn't like Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I mean, it already starts with the title, which is bulky, unappealing and has a fantasy name in it. But that's only the tip of the iceberg. Everything in this game has a fantasy name. Every person, location, item etc. And there's hardly any line of dialogue that doesn't contain at least one fantasy name. You're constantly getting cluttered with words like Dokkalfar, Esharra, Gorguath, Sagrell, Tuatha Deohn, Bhaile, Tirnoch and so on and so forth. So irritating.

Same goes for the villains themselves, except for Dooku, but only because it's Christopher Lee and Christopher Lee would have made Santa look scary if he wanted to.

Anastasia Rose Steele from the godawful 50 Shades series, hands down. I refuse to believe anyone could be saddled with that name without imploding from the sheer embarrassment. To quote someone who actually sat down and read those damn books:

Anastasia Rose Steele is not a heroine in a contemporary novel. Anastasia Rose Steele is the name of Jack and Rose’s rebellious teenage daughter in a Titanic fanfic. Anastasia Rose Steele is the name of a literal rose that doesn’t flourish very well, even in ideal conditions, thus making it a sought after bloom by master rose gardeners. Anastasia Rose Steele wins the Triple Crown.
