blakstar: That's interesting -- back when I used to read Asterix, the druid used to be called
Getafix.
Maighstir: Some characters change in different translations. May also be different in American and British English.
From Wikipedia, the two names are used in the same paragraph, but I can't find anything telling that they are alternative names of the same chartacter:
... British names end in "-ax" and are often puns on the taxation associated with the later United Kingdom, such as Valuaddedtax the druid and Selectivemploymentax the mercenary ... Most of these jokes, and hence the names of the characters, are specific to the translation, for example, the druid Getafix is Panoramix in the original French and Miraculix in German ...
Maighstir: Interestingly, the name Valuaddedtax isn't mentioned at all in the
list of Asterix characters, though it lists a few other names for the same character that have been used in English translations.
Thanks -- I know the names change according to the various languages, and I have heard of the French
, but of course they have to, otherwise the name puns wouldn't really make much sense.
