A question regarding Dark Legions

Is the combat arcade part similar to the one in Fantasy Empires (same developers, similar engine I guess)? Honestly the controls in that mode are my less favourite part of the game. They are unintuitive and weird. Unnecesarily hard to manage.

The tabletop/Archon Style of game is tempting, indeed. But curious about the arcade controls

Thanks in advance

Sulibor: You may consider editing and removing part of your post. Quake package was quickly stripped out of due to soundtrack licensing problems when it become common knowledge.
Done. Now I need that blinking thing from MIB and nobody will know.

I gave it a try a couple of times, and it's more or less similar to the arcade parts of Archon (I played only Archon Classic, but I guess it's quite similar in all iterations of this game).

There are some things though that are a bit annoying:

1.A bit clunky control. It's relatively easy, but I don't feel like moving my character is fluent.
2.Obstacles - I feel their "hitbox" is a bit too big and can cause some issues.
3. Some weird thing, that camera is "zooming in" when two characters are relatively close, which is very distracting and annoying.
4.Seems like vampire is a bit OP with paralyze attack - it's enough to hit once and then easily kill enemy, who won't recover on time. Very annoying thing.

Thanks for the explanation
And about the controls themselves, are they remappeable ingame at least? Depending the game the remapping via DOSBOX use to cretae glitches if the same shorcuts are used for a different function

For this kind of combat without mouse control (Star Control, etc) I discovered that I prefer the default keybinding I used in the old ZX Spectrum games, I consider it more confortable (Q/A/O/P SPACE instead of cursors)

Yes, fortunately you can re-define control without problems - during game you need to press F1 and go to settings.

Weird thing is, that game expects to define 8 direction buttons - so aside from up-down-left-right you need also to declare buttons for "up and right" "down and right" etc. And aside from that - two "action buttons".

And you can modify control for both 1 and 2 player.

Great.
I think it`s time to complete my pack with this one right now :P

MartiusR: Question regarding Star General - is there any other difference between DOS and Windows version, aside from the fact that network multiplayer is available only in Windows version?

I know about this one, since it's stated directly in the manual, but not sure if there are any others?
The dos version doesn't support the largest of maps in the 4x mode. According to the manual, this is the only difference

SECTION 1: Hardware Configuration Issues
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are having problems with your video display, please make sure
that you have obtained the latest Microsoft Direct X III video drivers
for your card. 99% of all video performance issues, or incompatibilities
can be traced to not having the latest Direct X video card drivers.

Note to Diamond Stealth 64 video card users: if your video card is
set to the fully accelerated mode you will experience game
performance problems. You should toggle this setting off for your
card.

During testing it was noted that some multi-CD changers experienced
difficulties with Star General and Microsoft Direct X III. Please make
sure that you have the most recent drivers for your multi-CD changer
before playing Star General.

A sound card is required for the game. During the sound setup routine
for the DOS version, you must set up a sound card or the game will
not work.

We recommend that you do not run screen savers while playing the
Win 95 version of the game.

If you lose a connection while playing in multiplayer mode,
you should re-boot your machine before re-establishing another game
session.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 2: Game Cinematic Performance
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If your cinematic sequences are breaking up (symptoms include
choppy music and blocky graphics), then you should copy the contents of
the directory on your CD called SINFO into the directory on your
hard drive called SINFO.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 3: Unit Data Changes
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since the time the manual was printed, there have been some changes
to the unit data in the game. We have included a final unit data
chart in 2 formats for your perusal: in your Star General game directory
you will find a text file entitled "UNITDATA.TXT" We have also
included a Microsoft Excel file with the unit data (this is the
UNITS.XLS file which you can find in the UNITS directory under
your Star General directory).

If you wish to edit the unit data for the game and implement your values
into the game check the STAR GENERAL web page for an editor to do this!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 4: Unit Capability Changes
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Destroyers now have an 80% chance of making a torpedo run against
Battleships before they are attacked. Use those Destroyers to
take out Battleships!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 5: Miscellaneous Game Changes
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Huge, and Vast maps are not available in the war setup for
the DOS version of the game.

In the Race Statistics screen, if the player puts the mouse over the
Hressan Hunters unit, the smart text will mistakenly display, "Killers."

Disbanding units does not provide RP's.

When purchasing a Space Dock next to a Moon (frozen) planet, the
cost is 50 RP's.

In the tutorial scenario, the Hressan DE may not attack your
Battleship as noted in the manual.

If the victory conditions are set to 51% in a 2 player random War,
the first player will need to capture 75% of the second player's
planets to meet victory conditions.

Due to Microsoft Direct X full screen mode in Windows, we don't
recommend that you attempt keyboard input during the AI player's
turn as you may inadvertantly minimize the application and corrupt
your game data.

NOTE TO DOS USERS: If you use the boot disk creator, please note
that you will need to edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to include a
mouse driver otherwise the game will fail. Additionally, if
you installed the game into a different directory other than
C:\STARGEN you will receive the following error message after
booting from your boot disk: "Bad command or file name." Simply
change into the correct directory and type SGDOS and the game will
boot. DOS users should not attempt to use MEMMAKER with their
boot disk as MEMMAKER may attempt to load your CD ROM drivers
incorrectly which will result in game crashes.

There is no accounting for the opportunities that may
have been lost by field officers being unwilling
or unable to react to diplomatic initiatives. By their
very nature, such situations are transitory and
fragile. There are numerous records of occasions when
such an action was taken, both successfully and with
varying degrees of disaster. . . .

A note about Veil of Darkness. It offers even voices in some parts like the intro or the Prophecies which count as a proper mission log, take in account that the voice and effects only work properly under adlib or Soundblaster. It is valid also for The Summoning

Veil of Darkness (and The Summoning) was also translated to Spanish, even the voices (only for Veil of Darkness), something rare for floppy based old games. But spanish is not an available version for this release. The game was praised and a relatively important release worldwide, probably more languages were an option in the retail version

Both games offer a very rich story, lore or intro at the beginning of the manual, It is closer to a proper mininovella, Short story, If gives a lot of context.
With not a lot of time on my hands, i did manage to get my Battleships to the presumable home planet of the enemy! The first thing those sneaky bastards did was to destroy the single scanner ship accompanying the , coughs, fleet. Without the extended lidar range of the scout ship the long range of the battleships is left redundant.
I guess with that move the neural network included receives its A+ grade on the player irritation scale.
More grades to follow!

Added pic to add to the current situational awareness thingy

Yes, support ships are already on the way arriving at scene. Scouts, Light cruisers, probably a tender to fix up those expensive battleships. One already got damaged with attacking one of the Death Stars orbiting the planet. I really thought i could outrange those fortresses, luckily outgunning is another option (for now)

“Space is big. That is a gross understatement. No
better description has been given. This is such because
there are no words for a concept incapable of being
grasped by the human mind. Picture three items, red
balls perhaps. Now five. Okay seven. Try for a million.
Not the number, but the image of a million individual
balls. There are millions and millions of stars in the
spiral arm of our galaxy that housed the Alliance and
the Schleinel Hegemony. At top speed these average
about a week apart. Nor are they evenly spaced. Some
clusters contain hundreds of stars. In the emptier
areas a ship could cruise for weeks and not pass within
sensing range of a planetary system.”

I know it's probably a little too soon to be asking but does anyone know what SNEG will be working on next? Bought all of their stuff, so far, and I'm anxious to find out what else is planned.
