Let's get physical

Exanima, the dark isometric RPG armed with a unique, physics-based combat system, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 15% launch discount.

You find yourself in a dark dungeon full of dangers shambling out of the shadows. You feel powerless, defenseless, alone. In order to survive, you'll need to grab a weapon and quickly familiarize yourself with Exanima's innovative combat system, which requires your undivided attention and adaptation to its dynamic flow. Every hit has it's own weight, angle, momentum, and impact.
The unconventional mechanics are being constantly refined and polished but Bare Mettle also aim to keep adding new content: complex NPC interactions, ranged and magic-based combat, additional encounters, items, and environments. After having successfully gone through the game's alpha and beta stages, they hope to release this compelling low-fantasy RPG within six to nine months, but as we all know the development process is full of emergent challenges, much like Exanima's core gameplay.

Learn to survive the dungeons by mastering the unique combat mechanics of Exanima, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 15% discount will last until May 23, 12:59 PM UTC.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.
This game is great fun. I hate to use such a trope, but it reminds me of Dark Souls in both atmosphere and learning curve. Every enemy is a threat. Every turn could be your last. Wandering aimlessly can and will be fatal. Learning the combat is fun but difficult. Once you learn it, the early phases get incredibly easy, but later sections are plenty challenging. Love this game, will apply for a refund on Steam and buy here if I can, or wait for a massive discount here.
I've been eyeing this game since I found at Steam but I wanted to wait until it was released, very glad it ended up here.

Bare_Mettle: One word of warning, the game is very unforgiving...
OK, the game looks interesting; I don't buy in-develeopment, but I'll be keeping an eye on this one and see about buying it when it comes out.

but...

Just thought I'd mention this: Whenever I see "unforgiving", as in "...this unique and unforgiving 3D isometric RPG..." (taken from your description page), I generally tend to avoid it. I love hard games, but it seems that nowdays, especially with indie games, unforgiving means simply "annoying". The make-10-pixel-perfect-jumps-in-a-row-or-go-back-all-the-way-to-the-beginning-of-the-level kind of annoying. Rather than being hard in an interesting/intelligent way.

Either way, I'll be following this one.

sorry to interrupt again, but i just wanna mention that currently 6 very positive reviews of currently 10 here on gog about exanima are made by accounts created this month. thats what one reviewer pointed out:

"The top 4 reviews for this game give it 5 stars each saying how great the game is yet each account is only a few days old and guess what the game only came out a few days ago these reviews smell like the devs of the game came in and review it"

one of this "reviewers" wrote "Glorious 10/10 platinum quality game. ..." for an early-access title!

Bare_Mettle: I'm guessing you're basing this purely on the screenshot on the game's page, which is a very unusual example. Each piece of lore in the game is quite unique and specific, and all of them should be interpreted only as the particular author's views or intent. This is by far the most fantasy themed piece of lore in the game, and is related to a sort of religious myth.

Starmaker: Yeah, I bought the game (the lady on the same screen looks awesome!) but I haven't actually played it yet. I'll have to sneak a graphics card into the work computer for that and hope corporate Windows doesn't throw a hissy fit. =)
Ah well, I'm hopeful you'll find the rest of the writing more to your liking. Believe it or not, I actually only just noticed the close resemablance to the whole Mines of Moria thing rereading it now. I promise the lore is definitely not derivative of LOTR.

Edit: nevermind, spoiler tag doesn't work here. Had to delete some of what I wrote.

Yup, and here's my response to that, posted earlier in this thread:

That's an ugly and completely unfounded accusation. We've never done anything like that and never will. I think literally everyone can speak to our uncompromising integrity. There are obviously some reviews by people who are already fans of the game, but that is entirely out of our control and and ultimately has nothing to do with us.

I think it's more interesting how that's one of two negative reviews, neither of which have anything to say about the game itself, but are just some sort of consipary theory random accusations with no basis in fact.

----

What are your trying to imply anyway? Huh? We've done nothing wrong or even questionable and we're certainly not trying to hide anything.

GOG = Grumpy Old Gamers? :-)

I like the game so far. I tried to avoid conflict, but suddenly some freak started swinging this meatcleaver. Me, I was armed with a damn torch. Then, out of the blue this clueless guy walked by. I tried to kinda hide behind him, resulting in him suddenly being hit by a meatcleaver. He got pissed and began swinging against meatcleaver-guy who was busy killing me. Best death ever!

I have gotten slightly better at hitting the training dummy. I still suck pretty bad, but I have gotten a better feel for how to put my weight into the swings.
Even though I`m a big fan of RPGs, all that I read here makes me sure that this game is not for me. A damage type that can only be healed 3 or maybe 5 times in the whole game and then your character dies? Well, not a good idea. Seems like a good way to make sure that no one ever reaches the end of the game. Combined with a hard difficulty and -from what I read here- a very uncommen way to control your character really lets me refrain from buying this game.
This post is under construction.

Might be a good call. The game is tough and unforgiving, it wants you to feel tense and afraid of what might lie in wait around the next corner. It certainly does not put you in a position where you can run around easily dispatching foes. Sometimes situations are unwinnable, and flight may be your only option. That said you always have an option, and it's up to you whether you care more about surviving than fighting and brute forcing your way through everything. Also, exprienced players can quite easily reach the end of the current content (killing everything in their path or almost) without using any of the provided healing items. Armour can mostly completely negate permanent damage, it offers very real protection, and avoiding confrontation until you're resonably well armoured is easily accomplished. You can even begin the game as an armoured knight.

Looks like a lot of fun, wherein the combat itself is enjoyable and not just a means to an end. In that regard, reminds me of Mount and Blade where the combat itself is really involving and much fun.

Hoping that it comes with a great story to play, and also that it will allow community dungeons and stories a la Neverwinter Nights. If that comes around in the future (or are those things slated for the other game?), I may have found a new time suck.

4rray: red damage is permanent and leads to death can be healed 3 times in the game so far (special very rare healing jars.

Bare_Mettle: Not to nitpick, but there are currently at least 5 healing items in the game.
dude, this combat is something. been playing for a bit now and it's a bit 'die by the sword' and a bit 'divine divinity.'

totally cool! can't wait for some future updates.

It is not as easy, there are many more factors to take into account to judge the game difficulty. For instance, being armored makes you almost invincible because it reduces the chance of perma damage drastically. Damage models are accurate and are based on weapons physic collisions.

Another thing to take into account is that not every NPC is aggressive, you don't have to beat everyone you find, in fact you can avoid combat almost entirely or even exploit the AI to your advantage.

Finally a new feature have been introduced in the last release that allows you to start with several characters. The knight have a very good armor equipment.

You also have to take into account that the game have two different types of damage. One is permanent and kills but the other recovers over the time and just makes you unconscious. I am not particularly good with the combat in this game, but the last time i played i reached the last level without using healing items and taking about 5% of damage.

Thank you for answering questions here.

The game costs $14.99 (full price) most everywhere in the world, except in Russia and a few other ex-Soviet republics, where it costs $5.18 (full price). Can you please explain why that is?

I live in Russia and I can explain this: a median wage in Russia is about 400$.

Bare_Mettle: @Azhdar
When SG is released we'll surely put it on GOG. It probably won't be for some time yet, we'd rather not release it until it provides a fairly complete and polished experience.
Late to the party here, but I'd like to ask a follow-up to this: if you do release the game (Sui Generis) on GOG when it comes out, will you provide a GOG key to backers? I pledged on KS way back when and would love to be able to get a game key here when it comes out.
