Let's get physical

<span class="bold">Exanima</span>, the dark isometric RPG armed with a unique, physics-based combat system, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 15% launch discount.

You find yourself in a dark dungeon full of dangers shambling out of the shadows. You feel powerless, defenseless, alone. In order to survive, you'll need to grab a weapon and quickly familiarize yourself with Exanima's innovative combat system, which requires your undivided attention and adaptation to its dynamic flow. Every hit has it's own weight, angle, momentum, and impact.
The unconventional mechanics are being constantly refined and polished but Bare Mettle also aim to keep adding new content: complex NPC interactions, ranged and magic-based combat, additional encounters, items, and environments. After having successfully gone through the game's alpha and beta stages, they hope to release this compelling low-fantasy RPG within six to nine months, but as we all know the development process is full of emergent challenges, much like Exanima's core gameplay.

Learn to survive the dungeons by mastering the unique combat mechanics of <span class="bold">Exanima</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 15% discount will last until May 23, 12:59 PM UTC.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the <span class="bold">FAQ</span> to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.

qwixter: The game looks interesting, but it sounds like the save system is quirky with save points, and is not save anywhere. I don't really care for such save systems.

Fakum12: Only 1 fixed and 1 optional save point at the moment....
1 fixed and 3 optional checkpoints last time i counted.

I stand corrected. Did not play long enough, but had read a comment from the developer. :-)

DeMignon: ... would love to play the finished game ... that is including possible DLCs.
avatar
Bare_Mettle: We will never release DLC game content. We do plan to continue updating the game after the full release, especially as we'll still be working on SG, but all updates will always be completely free.
That is awesome news! I've really got fed up with DLCs lately. Kudos to your team for this decision! Big +1

micktiegs_8: Wow, after looking at some YouTube I noticed there's a freaking monster in the game. Not only that, but the arena mode looks great... especially the 'fray' battle where there's more than just two people in a free for all.

I think I'll grab this as soon as possible, instead of waiting for updates.
avatar
4rray: I would also suggest you enable the beta to get the latest updates - combat is further refined and you can zoom in closer as well as adding new content. OR you could wait for the beta to get officially added with any bugs smoothed out

Niggles: Looks interesting. But a few things. Any ranged weaponry or magic in the game?. Any form of dismemberment ?.
Can objects be thrown as weapons at the enemy?.
avatar
4rray: Ranged weapons and magic are to be added so there's a big question mark over how they are to be implemented but the devs have done such a great job of the combat and continued to refine it that it should be very interesting. Dismemberment does not exists but there is ragdoll physics - hit someone right and they get knocked over and blows have real impact
thanks for the info!! :)

Bare_Mettle: The isometric style view is fundamental to how the combat and controls work, but they are quite unconventional and will take some getting used to. We actually originally planned to give the game a 3rd person / OTS view, but it was too chaotic with the physics and couldn't provide the level of accurate control that you get with a cursor and the more tactical view.
I guess I have to try myself if the controls are something for me.

Bare_Mettle: Native Linux support is something we'd like but not promsing yet. It runs perfectly under WINE however and with minimal hassle. It's a completely custom engine using no 3rd party technology and is OpenGL / OpenAL based.
Of course I would prefer an officially supported native Linux version. But hearing that the game runs well under Wine is at least something. :)

Thanks for your answers!

Do you remember "Die by the sword"? That's pretty much it....

mrkgnao: I believe anothername's original post was a joke on game realism in general, not strictly related to Exanima.
So he's objecting to Exanima based on things which are completely unlike the game, or at least it feels that way to me. That's what confused me, and still doesn't make sense to me.

The controls in Exanima are completely different from Die By The Sword.

It was a joke on realism in games. It's not necessarily related to this exact game.

I got that, but he did raise it as an argument against this game, which I take exception to. Joke as you may, if you're trying to imply something that's not true, I don't like it.

Crosmando: I backed Sui Generis on Kickstarter, am I able to get a code for it here on GOG? I just sent a message to you guys on the kickstarter page.
avatar
Bare_Mettle: We're looking into this with GOG. If it doesn't go against anyone's policies we'd be more than happy to oblige.
This would be great, thanks.
I'm also a SG backer and have an Exanima unused early access steam code, as I don't even have a user in that platform.
so after playing this for a couple of hours last night, i have to say that this game is awesome. it's a physics sandbox/dungeon crawl with some die by the sword and diablo dna.

the dank atmosphere created by the lighting and sound is second to none. the way your character moves & and builds momentum even while walking is really cool; hell you can trip over debris if you're not careful. the fact that it has a decent character creator is a plus too.

some things i think need work are the menu screens (they're functional but they need a bit of polish - lots of empty space and a barebones font) and the save system (i prefer save where you want or save point systems and am not a huge fan of autosaving).

tight little package with not a whole lot out there like it. amazing atmosphere, lighting, animation and sound; a little polish is all it needs.

The actual keymapping and details of the "sword-arm-control" differ, but the concept is the same.

It is not true, the concept of Exanima very different from DBTS almost in every aspect.
