If I could fly / like the king of the sky.

Airships: Conquer the Skies, a strategy game where you design and build your own airworthy vessels out of thin pixels, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 15% discount.

Did you have your dreams of becoming a pilot or a mad inventor crashed under the weight of reality? It's payback time! Build any ship you can imagine pixel by pixel and launch a campaign to conquer the unsuspecting world! Then watch it crash and burn in excruciatingly realistic fashion and build another one. The side-slice view on your creations will let you monitor all their inner workings as well as your crew's movements, while you fly around or do battle against other elaborate machines. Although the game is still In Development, all the core building and combat mechanics are already in place. Until its release, however, developer David Stark plans to add an extended strategic conquest mode, as well as the option to build land-ships with wheels, and to face dragons or other airborne menaces.

Design, build, and carefully fine-tune your battle-ready creations in Airships: Conquer the Skies, DRM-free on GOG.com!
The 15% discount will last until January 4, 13:59 PM UTC.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.

CharlesGrey: Right, Windforge! I knew there was already a similar game on GOG, but couldn't think of the title. According to more recent reviews, many of the game's problems have been fixed, so it might be worth a closer look. Certainly looks more refined than this, for whatever that's worth.
You can find my own review there, and I tried to like and completed Windforge. For what my opinion is worth, Windforge isn't worth it. As other reviews said, it feels incomplete and like the outline of a bigger, better game. Also, the weird 3/4ths block view really makes building from what could have been a fun captivating experience into an absolute chore. I recall it being easier to just steal a superior airship and leave it at that.

The promotional art when I saw this on the front page seemed really interesting. I also read steampunk and airships in the game's description which also seemed interesting. Then I look at the game's page further checking out the screenshots, and see that it's a lot of pixel art style that doesn't match the promotional art at all and just looks sort of plain.

If the actual in-game assets at least looked on the quality of those point & click adventures in the 90s that would seem interesting to me for this sort of game. But the in-game appearance itself outside of the map screenshot don't seem to do the idea justice at all, it just seems like a lot of blocky art and animation with no personality to it.

"Because Everyones Else is Doing It"

Regional Discriminating Prices,
Early Access/Paid Beta,
Steam-Like Client,

GOG is becoming more and more like "Everyone Else", just a matter of time before DRM will show up because "Everyone Else Is Doing It"

I think that's already happened.

Interesting... For me the reference (at least the first part) was for this song:

Hm, this looks very much fun. Definitely getting it soon. I love that it has strategy and tactical sections similar to other bigger strategy games.

Edit: Anybody already owns this? How far is it development wise?

This is mostly a WAG from the trailer.

Graphically speaking indicates programmer's graphics, the obnoxious font places it before first refinement, the terrible popup communication with no clear log & nearly invisible red text along with the entirely unclear indicators on the lower UI of the battle screen also suggest some pre-alpha state.

The bizarre southpaw cursor and unfunniy, unrefined "commentary" during battle suggests pre-beta.

The inability to tell what even during a heated battle also suggests pre-alpha.

Overall Score: Playable Prototype!

There's clearly an overall concept and ideas formed into something that marks the beginnings of a potentially great game, However, it clearly lacks some of the developmental marks that would clearly elevate it to a state beyond prototyping.
I bought this game in a really early development state, one or two years ago - and it was a really funny game from the beginning: Don't let the graphics irritate you, I was distgusted too when I saw them the first time. What makes the game absolutely great is the possibility to build your own airships from scratch - every single thing you can customize, I've built dozens of ships, experimented with different materials, built everything from a super behemoth to a swift canon boat. It's fun just to let them fight one against the other. I loved all the features like different weaponry, engines, air marines etc. Physics are great as well. The recent versions don't appeal to me anymore however: I loved the airship vs airship or airship vs fortress-battles, but now the developer puts in everything imaginable - from mech-like machines to giant spiders and even the greatest of all fantasy clichés: dragons... with all the fantasy ans scifi stuff it just isn't the same game anymore for me. It's still a great game if you like to construct things.

One can refer to many songs, but the OP title was no doubt a reference to Helloween since the lyrics match 100%. Not to mention that maladroid is from Greece and, as Greeks, we seem to love everything related to Helloween (and Blind Guardian among others!). :P

Lovingly mining your comment for improvement ideas, I have a few more detailed questions:

Is the font you dislike the title font or the one generally used in the normal GUI text?

What indicators in the battle screen are you referring to? The buttons? The munition/fuel/etc. values?
Man, this looks fun, happy to support it. Deluks Gaming and OfficialStuffPlus have made a whole bunch of videos of the game. It makes me think of Kerbal Space Program mixed with a Creeper World game.

As a single-player gamer I hope there will be even more of the cool/weird/unusual enemy types and scenarios in the finished game, multiplayer stuff does not interest me.
