First, a couple definitions for purposes of this topic:

A "trap" is anything in a game that punishes the player for doing something reasonable, and which the player could not have known about in advance. For example, if there is an invisible coin block above a pit that will cause the unsuspecting player to fall when trying to jump over it, that counts as a trap.

A "trap game" is a game that is built around traps as a mechanic. Some platformer examples of this are Syoban Action and I Wanna Be The Guy. (Note that games like VVVVVV and Celeste, while difficult, are *not* trap games, as you can see danger before you get killed.) Note that trap games don't have to be platformers; I could easily see a pure adventure game qualifying ("open door" -> "The door falls away from the wall, crushing you. Game Over").

Anyway, I would like to see a trap game that keeps track of which traps you have triggered. Furthermore, if you manage to trigger every trap in the game, there should be some sort of award. (If the game has achievements, this would be a perfect opportunity to give the player one.) Alternatively, the game could keep track of all unique deaths (typically as the result of traps), and reward the player for finding them all.

Any thoughts on this idea? Any games that have actually done something like this?

Edit: Why the down votes?

What I think is that this thread in itself is a trap. You are just expecting someone to make "traps are gay"-meme jokes here, but no, I am not going to fall for that! And I suggest no one else does either, otherwise we will soon all be banned from the forums.

Anyway, for the actual question, does Minesweeper count? It keeps track of the bombs at least, but then the idea is to detect them beforehand.

Rick Dangerous is a game that puts a lot of traps in a place where you have to die from it and memorize the location so you don't get killed by same trap again
I know I've encountered them here and there in games, but no specific examples come to mind. They are certainly irritating.
The NES had a lot of these; the original Metal Gear and Mission Impossible come to mind and didn't Zelda have a few,or am I crazy?

And do the Mimics in Torchlight count?

Does Divine Divinity telling you to, YES THE GAME ACTUALLY TELLS YOU, kill one of Otho's pigs count?

And that bitch in the caverns of Terraria. She's hard as hell to kill and gives you virtually nothing in return.

I finally figured out, once getting to a certain level in Torchlight and a lower depth in Terraria, to simply shoot from a distance at every chest I found. If it wakes up and attacks, then it's probably a Mimic. haha. And the one time you forget... CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP!

I don't know about those memes, but I heard that in Dragon Age Origins if you behave politely to gay character the game punishes you (if you are a straight male player) by making you both romantically involved and showing homosexual scene.

Mc Pixel could have this kind of feature, and a nice bearded old man too.
I remember coming across I Wanna Be The Guy years ago. I was horrifed! I hate games like that!

But, this game approaches Wile E. Coyote levels of sadism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nW9k6k1I3k

I would hate to play it, but watching it is pretty funny

I think the worst trap I've heard of (as I have nto played any NES games myself) was in the Dirty Harry game. That one is really just bizarre and mean.

You do realise that Timpuu was joking? why the bloody heck did you downrate the OP? Can you point to what exactly in the OP was offensive, inappropriate or spam?

This question goes to all who downrate the OP here - exactly why have you done so?

anyway - I tried to search for a game I had on Desura, but I can't find it again. It was styled as a typical Mario game, but everything was a trap of some sort or another, and you had to figure out how to get across on trial and error. I seem to recall your main character was a faerie?

I wasn't. The wretched degeneracy that is rife through out the West is incalculably destructive. People have the right to live how they wish. But the constant pushing and glorification needs to stop. And this has nothing to do with the morality of times gone by. Turning degenerates into some sort of "heroes" can only result in damaging societies. But as someone once said, let all the creatures that lurk in the mud hatch out. If you can find a safe and comfy place, it's a fascinating time to be in our world, gruesome, but fascinating ...
