A sad story and a great loss, Debian was one of the first distros I tried when I was a teen, it is also one of the oldest distros that's still going strong today.

Rest in peace.
Sad loss.

Debian was one of my first distros; it's where I learned how to use Linux the most. I still use Stable regularly.

Rest in peace Ian :(
Rest in Peace, Ian. : (
Hmmm :(
Without Debian we would not have any of the widespread Linux distributions like Mint or Ubuntu. He probably contributed the most to the Linux world to date.

Rest in peace.
Rest in Peace...

I read about his death earlier. It's really sad....
This United States Police Brutality needs to Stop and international community has to take a Notice. Since USA is part of the world it's institutions should adhere to international human rights!

I myself being an immigrant struggled to understand the monstrosity and logic behind this aggressive behavior towards troubled people, no compassion on part of the USA police. They are very brutal and sometimes remind me of SS in 1940's. There are also good Police Officers but there are the minority.

Rest in Peace, You are in a better place!

Matruchus: Wrong thread.
I've read the circumstances leading to his suicide if indeed it was one.

I suspect good police officers are actually the majority; you just hear about the bad ones because they are more likely to show up in the news. Also, people tend to only complain about the bad ones, not the good ones.
Why is it a sad story?
That link doesn't say anything particularly sad.

ok, so what exactly happened? All I found was that he had been harassed by police and his death is a possible suicide.

Not much is disclosed at the moment, but follow this Ars Technica article for updates.

Rest in peace Ian Murdock, your legacy stands strong.

Thank you for everything you have given us.
Although I have always used rpm or source based distros, I liked the revolution and change in thinking Debian started

RIP Murdock, god of Debian
I had deep respect and admiration for him. Debian was the first Linux distro I got to play with when I first started, and I'm sadden to see him go.
