I am so frustrated. These things are so fun, and functional, but can be so damned ornery sometimes and "normal" users (i.e. non-techy types) just have no hope.

Used my Razor Megalodon 7.1 headphones on this Windows 7 Pro laptop for years with no problems. Then used it on another laptop, a Windows 10 laptop for the past month or so playing Fallout 4, and now when I put it back in this one, it won't work. Shows up as a sound device, but won't work. Okay, so that's not really the thing I'm posting about. It's what led to this even more frustrating thing.

In an attempt to get it to work, I disabled the device that it was going to (see screenshot) but that didn't do the trick. So now I want to enable that device back, so I can have my sound through my ASUS monitor but THERE IS NO FRIGGIN WAY IN THIS UNIVERSE TO RE-ENABLE IT. None. Nada. Zilch.

Okay, so I decide to do a system restore to my last restore point (which was March 18, as I said I'd been playing Fallout 4 on another laptop for the past month and hadn't used this one). So great, when the system restore is done, I've got that sound device back up and sound is coming out of my monitor once again.

BUT NOW MY ANTI-VIRUS ISN'T WORKING. It isn't showing up in the little "task box" on the bottom right like it used to, and it won't let me do anything from the start menu either. So I figure I'll just reinstall it. Nope. It won't install because it says the old version must be uninstalled first, AND I can't uninstall it either from the uninstall program under the control panel OR from the start menu application itself. It won't run, and it won't uninstall.

So I'm left with two choices....

NO SOUND OPTION FOR MY MONITOR (by restoring back to today)
or
NO ANTI-VIRUS (yes I could get another but I get this free with my ISP and I've gotten used to it) (by restoring back to March 18.)

NO SOUND ON MY MONITOR or NO ANTI-VIRUS.

WTF? Why can't you re-enable a sound device once it's been disabled? As soon as I hit the disable button on that menu in the screenshot, it disappeared and nothing I do will bring it back.

AND WTF? Why can't I uninstall a program just because I did a system restore to a month ago.

Right click on the devices list, click "Show Disabled Devices". Right click the disabled device, click "Enable".

Where do I find this "Show Disabled Devices" thing you speak of?

Nevermind, found it. Now I've got to restore back to that point again and try it. Back in 15 minutes or so since that's how long it takes.

THANK YOU. Boy, talk about "hiding" something. How would any human being know to do that unless they read it or heard it from someone else, because there sure isn't anything on that menu that would tell you right click in this big white space and then you can find the option you're looking for.

Now, if only God himself could explain the headphones working perfectly on this laptop, working perfectly on the other laptop, but now won't work on this one anymore. (And yes, it still works perfectly on the Windows 10 laptop, I checked that too in case somehow the headphones had gone bad right at the moment I switched them. Nope. They still work perfectly on the other laptop, but WILL. NO. LONGER. WORK. ON. THIS. ONE. Despite working flawlessly for so long. Fuuuuuuucccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkk!

I am just wondering, when you plugged them in on the Win10 device, did it do anything else. Possibly it updated the firmware on the device for better Win10 compatability?

I dunno, I didn't see a pop-up box indicating that. But I think you're thinking along the lines I'm thinking of. I'm wondering if plugging it into the Windows 10 computer "did something" to the headphones that now makes them no longer work on Windows 7.

I suck so bad at searches but I'm gonna try and do an Ixquick search on it and see what comes up. Usually I either get nothing or a billion, and it's hit or miss as to whether what I'm looking for is on the first page or four of the billion.
Try going to Razer's site and reinstalling the firmware for the headphones on the laptop that doesn't recognize it. Also make positively sure you double click it under sound device and make sure nothing is muted.

http://forticlient.com/

https://www.avast.com/en-us/index

Two good and free Anti-Virus clients for home use.

(Full Disclosure: I work for FortiNet so might be slightly biased towards them.)
HOLY JEEBUS. I just plugged them into a different USB port, and NOW THEY WORK AGAIN.

This one was a USB 2.0, while all the others were 3.0. Apparently, that's the one I had it in before but didn't remember that.

Now the funny part? The new Windows 10 laptop's USB are all USB 3.0 and/or 3.1 (if I read that thing right, it said it was a 3.1, didn't even know they had that.

So, in order to get it to work on Windows 7 you need to plug it into a USB 2.0, but plugging it into USB 3.0 ports on Windows 10 is perfectly okay.

I hate computers.

ADDED: I wish there were some way for me to thank JMich (I've asked about gifting him games before but he resuses) he must've helped me a million times, and especially when I did my first self build a few years ago, he followed that thread throughout and helped me, an idiot, build a PC.

If anyone ever deserved 5-star status here at gog, it's him. Maybe I'll do a giveaway in his name or something since he won't take a free game from me.

Actually, I did note that on a search:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1827163/razer-megalodon-recognized-drivers.html
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2509509/razer-megalodon-working-usb.html
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1883321/razer-megalodon-recognized-win.html

Seems to be that you do have to use USB2.0 on older Windows, you could also check your USB3.0 drivers are all up to date.

Heh, did you notice the third of your links? I'll quote him:
It basically just pops up and says "USB device not recognized" if I go into audio devices in the device manager it does come up as "razer megaladon" but it has that little yellow exclamation mark of doom. I also tried multiple USB ports... 2.0 and 3.0 to no avail.
LOL. No wonder I hate computers. (see screenshot for another example) But I love computer gaming. AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!

Okay, so which one of you broke the forum this time? This isn't test_11, keep the messing-around out of here, please.

Try installing the latest drivers?
As for the browser: ctrl-0 (zero, that is, not the letter "oh") for "normal" zoom level?

LOL, I was wondering what the hell was going on myself. I logged out and logged back in, but it looks like that on my screen too. I thought it was just me.

Since it's my post I guess I borked the forums this time. But I didn't mean too, and have no clue how I did it. I just edited the old post with the added part and the screenshot.

Did I mention I hate computers?

ADDED: And now your post is looking messed up!!!

Dammit, I borked the gog forums.

Edit post 11, replace QUOTE (uppercase) with quote (lowercase). Seems that the closing tag is parsed properly no matter the case, but the opening tag isn't.

Yeah, I edited the post, and simultaneously figured out the error. I don't think the GOG forums handle upper-case tags very well, make sure your [.quote.] and [./quote.] are in lower-case, and make sure to have an equal amount of each.

EDIT: JMich.
