Not before I feel I have gotten my money's worth out of them and not before it no longer does what I expect it to do (due to being broken or just horribly outdated).

That takes several years at least...

It wasn't caffeine, it was speed! :P
Bought my current phone sometime in 2012 and I originally intended it as an extra phone. Just some days later, my previous phone breathed its last and the new one became my one and only phone. Will replace it when it also breathes its last.

I had a flipphone model circa 2004 (that I got in 2010, which was the first time I got a cell phone, because I had to because I moved and it was the only logical option) until last year when it broke and I had to get a "new" one. I spent about 35 minutes at the store him-hawing over which super-simple flip-phone to get to replace it (looking at the models on the floor, guided by the guy who was "helping" me), FINALLY decided on the cheaper even simpler one, he went in the back to get it and said "oh, sorry, we don't carry that model any more."

I was soooo fucking pissed. I was like "dude, you know I was choosing between TWO, JUST TWO, out of 20 models they have on the floor, and I spent HOW FuCKING LONG trying to decide, and you don't even have it? WTF is the model doing on the floor? What kind of tech system do you have that doesn't tell you on the computer [which he looked at a bunch of times] that you're out of stock? WHY THE FuCK did I just waste all of my time? Can I just have the floor model?" No I couldn't get the floor model.

OMG I'm still pissed, I want my old phone back, I hate this new one (which is probably why I chose the unavailable model, because I anticipated not liking this one.)

I use my phones until they no longer work. In the past I had to upgrade because the storage space on the phone was no longer large enough to install apps, but with more recent versions of Android I don't need to do that any more, I can just put in a new MicroSD card.

That being said, once the thing is out of warranty, I root it and that's more important than having the latest device. Plus, once you get rid of crapware like FB the devices usually perform better anyways.
I almost had to replace my phone recently because the power button wasn't pushing all the way in, so what I did was cut a little square piece of a soda can out, took the case off, stuck the piece of soda can under the button, and bam! Working power button! :D

They do shit like this on purpose. They want you to buy another phone, but unless this thing completely malfunctions it ain't happening.
It makes me glad to see so many people only replace their phone once it's broken. I'm one of them. My first cellphone, an Alcatel 311 didn't last me long, only 4 years or so. Next I had a Nokia 1100 that broke down after some 5 years, after which I brought a second hand Nokia 1100 and when that started failing too, I combined the best parts of both (I kept the old one), so for the last year my phone was made up of the best battery of the two, the best keypad, cover and phone itself. It got replaced by my first ever smartphone, a Fairphone 2 that I hope will last me 6 years. Which will be made easier by the modularity of the Fairphone.

Ooh eee girl,I love women swearing.
My intention is to keep them as long as possible. Reality is that something craps out and I end up replacing it before I intended. On the last one, the external speaker died so I couldn't hear incoming calls ringing in. Uhh, that's a pretty big problem, which is unfortunate since it was otherwise fine. Something else died on the one before that - another phone that was otherwise working well. This one, I think the last Android update really screwed it up and I'm thinking about wiping it and starting from scratch.

Not yet ready to root one, but I may give it a shot next time I know I'll be in town for a few days - in case I really mess it up and need to replace the phone on short notice.
Preferably when they stop working.

Simple man and all. I just need the damn thing to make calls and maybe play some music that doesn't require some bloated first party software to transfer from my PC.

Fuck itunes.

Currently enjoying my Blackberry
I use it till it doesn't work anymore. I also do prepay instead of an astronomical bill each month. If I want to connect to the net I just use a wifi hotspot. I don't text and it is for work calls, which are rare, and emergencies. I do play mp3s on it though :P
Once a decade.
I replace mine when the company starts hounding me about upgrades. I usually just get the same brand and style with a price reduction on the contract. It leaves me with a spare just incase which I like.
I replace my phone about twice a year with another phone I'm not completely satisfied with. Not a lot of choice for small smartphones. I hope that the upcoming iPhone 5se is a huge success and convinces phone makers that phablets aren't the only form factor people want.
