tinyE: Anyone with Direct TV, The Evil Dead Trilogy is on Starz tonight. Of course, and Sam Raimi agrees with me on this, AoD is a piece of shit that doesn't belong anywhere near the 1st two.
I have seen a couple versions of Army of Darkness and there is one that I think is pretty "meh" and one that I love, so, maybe he+you saw the lesser version!

There's so many great moments in AoD, imo. There's a brief brief moment with Ted Raimi coming up to Ash after he has kicked a whole bunch of ass at the castle defense and he says something like "Way to go, Ash!" as he comes up to him, like a fan asking for an autorgraph, and Ash givess the most perfect delivery of "Get the fuck out of my face." CRACKS me up. Bunch of riotous moments in that I think!

I think that's valid. The reason I just don't think it works is because it's tied to the other two. Evil Dead 1 & 2 are relentless not stop over the top blood fest that take no quarter and offer no apologies and AoD is almost an action comedy. I have nothing against action comedy, in fact I love action comedy, I just don't think one belongs in that trilogy.
For me it's: "Halloween: Playing alone with Victor Vran"!

I understand, they've got different flavors, certainly. I think different genres can still be in the same series, though, it just mixes it up. They just went there with it with the base material they had, I think 2 is a good bridge between them as well. 1=straight horror. 2=comedy horror. 3=action comedy fantasy horror. It is ballsy though, considering fans usually want more of the same, so I understand.

Part of it for me too is that I had no idea Army of Darkness was related to the Evil Dead movies until a while AFTER I saw Army of Darkness. When I was a pre-teen at the video store, I stayed away from the Evil Dead movies, but Army of Darkness on the shelf always appealed, and so when I turned 13 and was "old enough" I rented Army of Darkness, and loved it. Then when I was 16 I worked up the courage to rent Evil Dead, and was like "OH WHAT?!?!?! They're part of the same series?!?!"

I couldn't watch/rent Evil Dead 2 fast enough after that realization, and then it all came together with the portal opening and all that. I was blown away.

drealmer7: 2=comedy horror.
Are you suggesting that being attacked by your own hand is funny? :P

I remember the 1st time I saw that. Every time he "stopped" it I thought, "Okay, next scene." but that fucking thing just kept coming back over and over over and over! XD

It's like the hand from House!

The first time I saw Evil Dead 2, I watched it with my mom!!! Because I had had her watch Army of Darkness before that and knew 2 was going to be comedic as well. We were CRACKING UP at all of that, especially the bloodbath after he shoots it in the wall. I never suggested she watch the first one though, she wouldn't have liked that. Especially the raping vine.
I just noticed that GOG doesn’t seem to have any Japanese horror at all! The closest I could find was F.E.A.R., which takes its inspiration from J-horror.

The Black Heart is a free fighting game featuring a J-horror inspired character called Noroko.

Mad Father
Free, fan-translated japanese RPG. Good production value and a kitchy-gothic story. But a bit silly.
Arrow Keys = Move
Z/Enter/Space = Do stuff
X/Backspace = cancel, call menu, skip text
C/Shift = Special Key

The Crooked Man
Japanese-inspired adventure game. The visuals are typical retro-RPG, something that gives a crazy contrast to the games rather mature story elements. Most of the items you find are used automatically when you interact, so you won’t be fiddling with your inventory much.
Arrows = Move
Z = Interact
X = Menu

DreadOut (steam, not free) looks fun, too.

I tried to get White Day: A Labyrinth Named School to run, but no dice :-/
