Okay, got my gear out in the in the dark. Admittedly, full moon was pretty bright tonight, so it wasn't that dark. I started out playing Penumbra: Overture ... I reached that first enemy and my cat walked right across the keyboard. That didn't kill me, but later my stealth sucked and I got eaten and scarequited. I get lost rather easily, and it's frustrating to try and find the right way and being stealthy at the same time. I will need to draw maps.

I lasted a bit longer when I played Alien vs Predator. But got lost here, too. But quite a good game! (When I play it next, I might tune the game speed down a bit, maybe turn off the music. I'm downloading that HD mod at the moment.)

Then I tried some Lone Survivor. Not scary so far, but it manages to get the pixel art world feel twisted and gritty. The overall feeling of this game has 'something' that both Aliens vs Predator and Penumbra lacks. The artsy indie style makes things a bit more personal.

However, at that time my fingers felt like they were going to freeze off, so I went back inside at made myself some tea.

I know just the place to play next. But there's no seats or tables, so I need to figure something out.

The Dark Fall games always get to me. Having puzzles in horror games tends to kill the creepiness for me after a while due to the frustration of solving them if they happen to be rather tricky,...however not in these games, not for me.

Scariest games I've played:

Planescape: Torment (the sewers. Man, the sewers.)
Eye of the Beholder 2 (the dungeons).
Immortal Defense (plenty of horror throughout, but the final campaign takes the cake).
The Last Door, when it still featured the characters whose stories I gave a fuck about -- so, the Collector's Edition which is available on GOG, BUY IT NOW.

If you are still looking for scary games, I will recommend the freeware adventures 5 Days a Stranger and 7 Days a Skeptic. Both of them have a very creepy atmosphere.

Seriously, that's a nice kitty and a perfect addition to the scene. Now you just need some kind of old-fashioned lightsource, like a lantern or something.

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is a very disturbing and scary game, and it has no jumpscares. The horror is all in the story, atmosphere, and sound. The voice-acting by Harlan Ellison is also excellent.

I haven't played The Cat Lady myself yet, but I own it and have it installed. A friend played it with the headset on, and he jumped up from the chair several times :P This will probably be the game I play this Halloween.

I'm considering grabbing Sanitarium in the current sale. Is it any good?

I find it very over-rated. A good game, sure, but I think it gets a bit hyped for some reason. Definitely not scary or creepy, it has those sort of elements that some will find more effective than others, but it's light IMO, especially compared to more serious+scary games.

Anyone with Direct TV, The Evil Dead Trilogy is on Starz tonight. Of course, and Sam Raimi agrees with me on this, AoD is a piece of shit that doesn't belong anywhere near the 1st two.
