Let me preface that my Steam account is known as [GOG.com]Pooka Mustard™.
Or, three hours from now, will be used to.

Just a few minutes ago, I got this mysterious support email from Steam Support. Unusual, what could make the awfully horrendous Steam Support create a help request for me?

I clicked the link in the photo (not the trouble viewing links) and went to this page.

It says absolutely nothing except "Your help request: My account is restricted". Quickly strolling the forums through the browser, I see nothing is restricted on my end. It took a few more minutes for another email from Steam support to arrive.

Apparently GOG wants me to remove the [GOG.com] tag from my name. From the contents of the message, it is understandable: less confusion from the staff. But I wonder why they bothered?

I thought Steam always using your account name and not your profile display name in their emails .

I'd contact GOG, and change it back afterwards. Last time I checked You couldn't copyright an abbreviation.

I can see why Steam wouldn't want you in there with that name but it's not them asking you to change it.

Obviously they don't want anyone to think Pooka is actually representing GOG in any official capacity. Which makes total sense (no offense meant to Pooka).

Indeed. It's....GOG asking for it. And they went to Steam to do it. I've nooooo idea.

That much makes sense, sure, but...how has he gotten away with it for THIS long? His username's looked like that as long as I've known him.

It's not surprising really. A lot of people on Steam who are affiliated with certain companies, especially gaming companies tend to put their company name in brackets like you did.

This gives the impression that you are affiliated with GOG, and somebody from GOG probably noticed and reported it to check if that was the case. GOG likley had Steam remove it as to make sure you do not falsly pass yourself off as a GOG affiliate or employee because that reflects on them as a company.

Probably they only now noticed, most likely by accident. I doubt they have someone doing regular patrols for that :D

It has nothing to do with copyright or trademarks, etc.

GOG is well within their right to ask to Steam to change a players display name and Steam is well within their right to follow through with that request and honor it or deny it.

I've been once asked if I was affiliated with GoG by one publisher after asking for a GoG release.

As other have said, its most likely GoG ensuring there is no confusion over affiliation. I doubt there has been any complaints over Pooka's conduct.

What abbreviation are you talking about? GOG is no longer an abbreviation.

The alternative would be start working for GOG Ltd...
