Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

VanishedOne: On the whole I like the interface changes, but I think navigating between activity/settings/downloads pages was more convenient in the previous version. The links are hidden away a bit now, in a drop-down menu that seems to get everything and the kitchen sink thrown into it.
I for one quite like this look, leaves the whole left side reserved to the games. Also GJ on minimizing it to tray. This was probably the thing I was looking forward to the most.

BKGaming: The way the achievements are displayed is not final is it? Looking at The Witcher Adventure Game... clicking show for the achievements just drops a big list achievements. This isn't very efficient
It's not final, but that whole game view is not final either. By default you should be seeing the few recently unlocked achievements only and a separate option to see the entire list if you wish.

avatar
BKGaming: Regardless glad to see those are being added now, hope to see more games getting achievements soon. :)
Yup :)

BKGaming: PS: Galaxy also seems to be downloading really slow for me today.
Are you experiencing the same when it comes to downloading standalone installer from GOG website? Any specific game you were downloading?

Thank you for adding a taskbar icon! The client doesn't detect S.T.A.L.K.E.R: SoC if you have 1.0004 installed, but this is probably due to registry changes you have to make. Fallout 1 & 2 aren't being detected either.
Thanks for the update, GOG. Liking the new taskbar icon. :-)

My install of Ether One isn't being picked up by the import scan and it took three or four attempts for it to pick up The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

It would be useful to be able to set the folder to scan in the settings (or have it automatically scan the library folder in the settings) rather than having to browse all the time.
Doesn't seem to be scanning and adding to the client for me. Act of War isn't seen as purchased let alone downloadable.

I wish we had a choice of bundled and unbundled games. I'd have rather used one installer for Act of War.

Anyway, thanks for the games and the love GOG.

I can download Fallout 1/2 normally from the client. Is this not the case for you?

Also, I now only have three games installed that don't work with Galaxy. Are all games supposed to function with it, or is this expected?

icel: No problem. Where are the log saved, or how do I get them?
avatar
MC: It depends on the operating system:
On Windows Vista or later: C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
On Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
I opened an issue.
Just noticed that in my original forum message I forgot to mention the game... it was Pillars of Eternity.

edit: Ah! the client was updated and suddenly it recognize the game! YAY

I'm not objecting to the moved Store and Library links, but I'd rather games' activity/settings/downloads page links had also been left in the top bar. Those links are now bundled into a dropdown menu along with miscellaneous other stuff.

I didn't check from the site, was downloading the update for train fever, was beyond slow until about the end of the update. This morning though I've had no issues. :)
The new update is pretty nice, just a couple issues.

I still occasionally get the website menu bar glitch.

The scan for games option missed the majority of my installed library because I still have them installed with the bundled directories, but I guess I'll have to update that eventually anyway. It would be nice if there was an easy way to do that without downloading/installing everything again and moving my saves over.

I'm not really crazy that when you close Galaxy now it sends it to the system tray. I'd rather see minimize go to system tray and close actually close Galaxy. I try not to leave Galaxy running while I'm not there since it's in alpha because I don't want it doing something weird and burning up my net which is limited. Perhaps have some kind of option for this under settings?

Galaxy has been on all day now because I forgot to close it from the system tray. :/

Well so far I have had no major issues with Galaxy. Only issue I've noticed so far is some of the larger install games seem to hang at 99% for some time before the install finally finishes. All my games install and uninstall just fine otherwise.

Only missing 3 games from my library and until they are made compatible I can't test them out with the Galaxy client.

Thank you for moving the library menu to the top! Makes it so much easier to find it now.

One thing I would love to see changed is the order the games are listed in the left sidebar after install. I would rather have my games arranged alphabetically rather then by install date.

Also Thank you for allowing the client to minimize to the system tray instead of closing out completely. That drove me nuts having to re-open it every time.

So far so good! Can't wait to see what other features get implemented into Galaxy!
The client doesn't appear to behave properly when launched via RDP. The logs show that it can't figure out my session ID. This makes it fail to save settings or auto update (and other random weirdness with the communication service). I know I'm probably the only one trying to use this over RDP, but I like to start game downloads remotely.

2015-04-02 14:35:53:825 [galaxy_client][Warning]: SessionID is not equal to ActiveConsoleSessionId while getting process token from process explorer.exe, error code= 0
2015-04-02 14:35:53:826 [galaxy_client][Warning]: Failed getting token for process explorer.exe, checked processes: 133.
2015-04-02 14:35:53:826 [galaxy_client][Warning]: GetCurrentUserSID() failed

There's no good way to connect to the console session via RDP on a Windows client, so the SesionId will never match the ActiveConsoleSessionId.

Why not just WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().User to get the SID? What's the reason for getting the token from explorer.exe?

Downloading them from the client isn't an issue. Detecting them is this issue. I had them installed prior to the alpha client.

Have you tried installing them from the client library? When I did that, it used the game files I had prior to install them to Galaxy; only smaller patches were downloaded (for compatibility, I imagine).
