Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Destro: There should be a blue dot appearing on the sidebar list, next to every game that there is an update for available (if auto updates are disabled for that game). If that wasn't the case, then either the "update available" under "MORE" button was bogus (I doubt we were pushing any updates since the last beta, but I could be wrong) or indeed the dot is not appearing.
I'd suggest posting to mantis specific report regarding this.
Thanks,

I believe it may have been bogus or some weird issue because something was wrong with the game which I have now got fixed. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: SHADOW OF CHERNOBYL was the game that had the issue. I don't believe I seen any blue dot next to it but it could have simply been missed by me. I will be sure to look for one next time.

I have all my games set to not update, and expect that Dead State may receive an update next week since a patch just released for it on Steam. I'll wait to see what happens with that game, as this may have just been a one off issue.

PS: I would also really appreciate a global option to disable updates for every game. ;)

TinMonk: 2. I'm not sure how fully integrated it is, but downloading purchased games, specifically large games (over 2.5 gigs) results in the client losing connectivity. Example is FEAR: every time I go to download the installer to my external (a la GOG Downloader) it stops a 57%, and the drops my connection to the client. Same thing occurred with Magrunner, roughly 75% into the download.
avatar
Destro: This should not happen and even if connection is lost, the app should reconnect.

Could you please clear your Galaxy Client logs (they are in hidden ProgramData folder - for example C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs), launch the Client, try replicating the issue and once the bug is replicated post a new entry in mantis.gog.com and attach the logs?
Thanks for the reply. Will do.

+1 to that.

Would be nice to have the following 3 global options:

[x] auto-update games when an update is available (default)
[ ] auto-update only when a game is launched
[ ] do not auto-update games at all

The same options available as per-game overrides.

Personally I'd like to disable auto-updates globally by default so that I'm not wasting bandwidth or slowing down my network operations for games that I have installed but which I am not even playing currently as I have about 120 games installed so that can churn a lot of network traffic unnecessarily. I would set auto-update when game is launched on most of my other games likely, as the updates would happen fast enough for me with the combination of my broadband speed and my patience.

The other options above would pretty much allow anyone to configure it for their own personal preferences though covering just about any scenario. I do think that having auto-updates enabled makes the most sense as a default from a technical support perspective, and letting people disable it at their option like I would to override that.
I believe that you need to add a pause and control instrument of downloads.
My Internet is not so quick to download the game quickly.
Yesterday I tried to download the game and I had to cancel the download and start again a few times, because when I needed the internet - client takes all the speed and everything slows down.
I got a slight problem with the client regarding downloading DLC. I just tried AI war because I own the DLC and it only downloads the base game which is smaller. I just checked Smugglers V: invasion and it didn't download the DLC to install as well. It would be nice to have a dialog box (or a option in the client) to download all DLC for game". Funny. It seems that only AI war doesn't download the DLC installer for the game

Well I thought I should ask before I waste 10-20 GiB of download... :P

So: How do I install a "non-english" version of a game from the client? For example, if I want to install Witcher, I have an "INSTALL" button and a greyed out "MORE" button and it says "English" next to it. Assuming that clicking "INSTALL" just installs the English version.

Under the Downloads tab I can download a Hungarian Installer manually but how to install a non-english version from Galaxy?

I filed an RFE for this in case you (or anyone else) wants to monitor it also:

I think you absolutely need to go under the download tab, select the language and click on the "Game" line where it's saying the size of the download and the version of the game. That's the only way I could install my games in French.

Oh well, with Witcher 1 I had luck since you can select the language in-game without the need of download anything. Apparently.

Still, it's a little bit confusing as it lists the different language options under the "Downloads" tab. I wonder how would it work with games which do not offer in-game language options instead have different versions for each language.
Please offer an option to turn off the Depth of Field effect when opening the download panel. It looks awful. :l

Also, the client needs a FOV slider. Just for one John Bain.
First time using it, tried a couple things today. No "actual" bugs found, but some shortcomings (within realization it's alpha).

* SHORTCOMING: When downloading the standalone installers, as well as extras, it all gets thrown into one bin, the selected "extras" folder. It doesn't create sub-folders to keep things organized as the current GOG downloader does.
* SHORTCOMING: Download stand alone installer. Moments later click "Install" and it downloads whatever again instead of using what's already downloaded.
* SHORTCOMING: No option to disable automatic updates globally.
* SHORTCOMING: Dialog used when selecting folders for Galaxy locations omits the "New Folder" button.
* SHORTCOMING: Library is split across multiple pages instead of one page (making it inferior to even the website).
* SHORTCOMING: No option to skip the storefront and always view my library.
* "BUG": Icon for DOSBOX Graphic Mode Step is the same as web link icon; no visual indication they are different.

A few installs/configures/plays/uninstalls have been fine, except it leaves the folder (+saves) behind after uninstall.

Venom: (...)
If you miss the Rise of the Triad giveaway, no worries - it's going to be 80% off for the remainder of this entire bloody affair. This is as good a time to get in on the fun, as we anticipate a big, important, Rise of the Triad (2013) technical update! Soon, you'll be facing off against your Steam buddies on equal terms and equal footing.
(...).
Seems to me like Rise of the Triad coming to galaxy. The question is, will the game show up and be available for download in galaxy client before or after the update? Impatient I'm not just curious if we get an opportunity to test such a update.

Okay I think something is defiantly up with the update system when updates are disabled. So now Galaxy is showing an update is available for Assassins Creed (which I doubt really has an update) and again I see no blue dot. Is anyone else had this issue?

I''ll post something on mantis I guess...
