Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

Hi everyone,

we've released the 0.7 version a couple of minutes ago, here's the changelog:

- External links will now be forwarded to the system browser
- Wishlist option added to the LIBRARY menu

- Option to keep saves, when uninstalling a game
- Windows: starting the client when another instance is already running should now open the running instance (rather than displaying error message)

- Fixed uninstallation issues on Windows
- Fixed an issue which prevented using Paypal, when buying a game
- Fixed an issue which prevented from displaying Terms and Agreements when registering new account

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

SoanoS: Looks like this client has got some trouble listing all the games I own. I have 399+1(the Galaxy Client) games in my library, but the Galaxy Client Alpha only shows 322 products under my library.
That's because the client doesn't support all the games yet, as mentioned in the first post of the thread.

My entire library is located on the external drive.

After the reboot list of games in the Galaxy client ceased to be visible and shortcuts on the desktop does not run the games.

The only solution is to add each game using the install option.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Is there a solution?

stickymouse: Has anyone had a similar problem?
You should probably check the mantis. Quick question though, is the external drive fully initialized before Galaxy starts? And does the drive letter remain the same?
Yes , drive letter is always the same and the drive is always switched on at the same time with the computer.

Thanks for the link.

Oberon70: Glad to see they are working on this client. I have just launched it and it looks good for an Alpha - only problem I have so far is it doesn't scale very well on high res monitors like 4k.
avatar
skeletonbow: Yeah, doesn't scale well on 2560x1600 either. Lots of wasted whitespace and some of the fonts are so small you need an electron microscope to read. :) I'm sure that's temporary though. :) Hopefully they add elements of responsive design to the UI and content so that it works well on everything from low res mobile phones to 30+" high res displays.
The issue is Windows specific as on OSX it scales perfectly fine on "retina" displays and the UI embedded is platform independent. We will look into it.

I don't know if it's planned or not, but you really need to add a way to pause and throttle downloads.

I noticed that now, seems it primarily effects game bundles with multiple items. (Also, my first post to reply to you a few hours ago was eaten.)

Not sure if anyone else has reported this, but browsing the store and the promo page (Yay, EA!) trough the Galaxy Client, it does not detect games you already own in the promo and displays all games as "Games you do not yet own".

Covered in GOG's original post in the thread.

SoanoS: <snip>
And maybe ability to set the games to be listed as one long continuous page.
Indeed, having to page through all of the games slowly one page at a time is painful. I've got 335 games for example with 3 pages showing currently which will become 4 or 5 pages by the time all games are supported by Galaxy and the game unbundling is completed. It would be nice to at least have the option to have the library view all on one page like it is on the website and most other gaming clients. Keep pagination as an option for those who might want it, but make a single all inclusive page an option as well. Also, the pagination controls should be updated to not require a linear sequence of clicks to get to the end, so instead of showing "< [1 of 3] >" at the bottom with only the arrows being clickable, it should have more user friendly navigation like blogs or Google search results do such as: "<< < 1 2 3 > >>" standing for "First page, previous page, page 1, page 2, page 3, next page, last page" allowing complete random navigation. From a human interface design perspective the less mouse clicks a person needs to use to find what it is they are looking for the better the experience they will have. As an additional selection, in the Galaxy client settings under User Interface section the following options would be nice:

[x] Enable pagination on library view
[100] Number of games to display on each page.

This allows people to choose whether or not they want it paged or all on one page, and how many games to display on each page if pagination is enabled.

I can file these as feature request suggestions in mantis if desired.

SoanoS: Also, tabbed library browsing by game category would be good, maybe even add custom categories to sort things by.
Also great suggestions many people would no doubt like to have as well. Think that might be in mantis already.
Is there any way for the client to detect games I had previously downloaded? The games are in the same folder as the games I downloaded directly from the client (C:/GOG Games).
I'm just popping in to add to the conversation:

1. so far, the client installs and removes its download, library, and extras paths cleanly. I've changed paths several times, used the client to install and uninstall, and have found no residuals on the various drives.

2. I'm not sure how fully integrated it is, but downloading purchased games, specifically large games (over 2.5 gigs) results in the client losing connectivity. Example is FEAR: every time I go to download the installer to my external (a la GOG Downloader) it stops a 57%, and the drops my connection to the client. Same thing occurred with Magrunner, roughly 75% into the download.

3. Installing and uninstalling, however, so far works fine. I've tried everything from Rayman Forever to Unreal 2.
a. You may want to specify in "Setting" menu accessed at the bottom left corner of the client that the directory path marked "Downloads Path" is actually a "Temp" path for installing the games through the client. You may run into problems with low disk space for some if they don't realize where the games they are installing are actually going first. This can also lead to slower install times depending on which drive it accesses.
b. Is it possible for the client to simply install from GOG\GAME FOLDER if someone has already downloaded via browser and/or the GOG Downloader, instead of re-downloading a game through the client?

4. I'd prefer if there was some way to globally disable the "auto-update" for all games. Defaulting to "always-on" for every game, thus forcing the user to disable it for each game seems contrary to the spirit of the client.

The app is coming together swimmingly. Keep up the awesome work.

EDIT: JUST SAY DORITOS POST THE SAME BASIC POINT I MADE IN 3 B.

I had similar connectivity problems on thursday trying to download Planescape: Torment, Treasure Adventure Game and I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream (not particularly large games). However I was able to download them all with no problems yesterday.

Will we eventually get notifications if an update is available when we have updates off either via a notification system or a pop up when starting Galaxy? I was going through my games when I realized that on one the "MORE" button was blue saying that an update is available. Had I not been going through my games I would have never known.
Is there any plan for Galaxy to implement a Steam Workshop or Desura-like mod management functionality?
Having installed several games through Galaxy I have noticed an issue. Galaxy has a habit of dropping the connection during downloads if I'm doing anything else on the internet at the time. I don't mean like youtube or something, I mean loading a wikipedia page is enough to drop the connection.

There should be a blue dot appearing on the sidebar list, next to every game that there is an update for available (if auto updates are disabled for that game). If that wasn't the case, then either the "update available" under "MORE" button was bogus (I doubt we were pushing any updates since the last beta, but I could be wrong) or indeed the dot is not appearing.
I'd suggest posting to mantis specific report regarding this.

This should not happen and even if connection is lost, the app should reconnect.

Could you please clear your Galaxy Client logs (they are in hidden ProgramData folder - for example C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs), launch the Client, try replicating the issue and once the bug is replicated post a new entry in mantis.gog.com and attach the logs?
