Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

johnnyd2: so, i downloaded the GOG galaxy client from that mediafire link, tried opening it, didnt work. is it cuz my account isnt flagged or something? doesnt even open when i try using any of the exe files
We can't help you because a) we didn't download it that way we got it officially and b) you not really suppose to have it. If your getting crap from mediafire, you really don't know what your getting, you could be getting a fake galaxy program that's really a virus for all we know.

EDIT: Ninja'd by JMich, what he says is also true...

Usually when companies do alpha testing of this sort, they issue keys to new testers on an as-we-need-new-testers basis so they don't get overwhelmed with large numbers of duplicate bug reports, or excessive bug reports for things not currently being tested, that's been my experience both as a tester for various things and as a developer. As the software's features stabilize and bugs get worked out and additional feedback is needed, a developer then extends the testing to additional people so there is always a pool of new people. Additionally, opening up testing to too many people too early can get people's expectations up or have people pre-judging an application a long time before the design is even solidified. So it's often felt to keep the number of testers high enough to get the right amount of useful feedback but low enough to be able to do something useful with that feedback before expanding the reach.

I dunno if that's what GOG is doing but it is one common way it is done in the field, and from their comments it seems to be their approach here as well. Best thing one can do is just be patient and know that the longer the wait, the more features the software will have and the more stable it will be when the day comes that they hand out the new codes for more testers. :)

From things they've said in the last couple of weeks, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a new build out sometime really really soon, like within the next week or few weeks anyway, and they probably will fire off new alpha invites then to scoop up some more testers. Keep your fingers crossed! :)

The client is a bare bones ALPHA right now. Don't expect to get STEAM lite or anything. There are many features planned and being implemented periodically, but it is still largely unfinished.

Well I don't know, I can see how someone would say that the Galaxy client doesn't really have much going for it but I think its on the right path. First and foremost it should be an incredibly easy way to access your GOG catalog, and the store on Galaxy should be its own application instead of a link to the GOG website (much easier to use the website instead of the same thing on Galaxy).

The other stuff like friends lists and multiplayer should not be rushed. Though I would like more options on how a game is lauched
Just a reminder folks... (from GOG's original post above):

I think it's important for everyone beta testing to do their best to honour and respect GOG's wishes above. It's not intended to be a finished product yet, nor to do everything everyone might want it to do yet. They are simply testing some of the core technology out, and quite frankly technology tests can be quite boring to the average person/consumer. People waiting for a fully functional full blown client really would be better off avoiding any alpha or beta tests and just waiting for them to finish their product before reviewing it or casting judgments about it or what it is going to be when it's done. We simply don't know, and they've kindly asked us to not do that.

I personally trust that GOG developers know what they're doing, and that as the software matures and features are added and completed, that it will become ever more useful. I also believe that they will be listening closely to alpha tester feedback and suggestions and that will help to shape the end result as well. Lastly, they are trying to give us gamers something here at GOG that we formerly did not have, and to improve the overall experience with GOG for existing and future customers, and they will almost certainly be listening to everyone's feedback over time and shaping the application based on that. So I think we're all best to let them work on their product and withhold judgement about it until it actually exists. We can pass on wishlist items to them in the mean time and as it develops, and they're most certainly listening so we can all play our part in helping shape Galaxy client and service(s) to what we'd like to see happen. We aren't going to wake up tomorrow and have an alpha quality Steam client killer though, that'd be an unrealistic expectation. :)

I share my thoughts about this simply in the hope that people will stay true to GOG's wishes above and try to stay positive and constructive about what they're trying to do and give them the benefit of doubt to help make their life easier while they do what they can to try to make our lives easier as I really want to see this project succeed both for GOG's sake and our own. ;o)

So, I made a list of the games I have that work with the alpha client (and even one that used to but doesn't show up anymore! :O ), and I was thinking that others could join in and we could get a more comprehensive list. BUT, I don't know if this violates the "don't give first impressions/reviews/the-first-rule-of-alpha-client-is-don't-talk-about-alpha-client" part of the OP. I was thinking maybe a mod could fill me in? :)

My post was not meant to be a review but more to set the expectations of people realistically. The Client has a lot of great features planned and I'm looking forward to them. I wasn't reviewing or posting any opinion, at least not intentionally. It is an ALPHA build and people should not be expecting to get an ALPHA key and get STEAM lite or anything. The current state has a lot of incomplete features. I wasn't trying to bash the product at all as I'm THRILLED it's as far along as it is! :P I'm sorry if my post came off that way to anyone. Edited my original post to reflect this.

Agreed, people really shouldn't have any expectations from alpha software IMHO. I think a lot of people sign up for alpha/beta testing of software (including Galaxy client but by no means limited to it) just as a form of "early access" to get something much sooner than waiting for a final release, and set their expectations high either no matter what the purpose of the given test is, nor no matter what the developer has stated is included or what they've requested. ;o) Sometimes people sign up like that blindly and wait for a key without reading anything about what to expect or what to do, or what they should do. Sometimes that can be via poor communication or miscommunication on a developer's end but I think GOG has communicated fairly well at least. :) At the same time it comes with the territory so the developer and testers should help redirect people too who may have missed out on instructions/expectations/mailings/forum posts etc. Keeps things on track.

Now when's that next build coming... hehehe I've been trying to free up gobs of disk space on my game installation disk so I can test larger parts of my library and toss feedback in mantis. Keep running out of space though, time for a good spring cleaning soon. :)
Can we expect some news from GDC?

No, we do not yet have any public news regarding the Galaxy Client. But this week we should release a nice update for participants of our closed tests, and we will sent out more invitations once the new version is available. Stay tuned :)

can't wait to try the new build! thanks
When you release the new update, please make it available via standalone installer on the library too, as some of us are having problems with the updater.
