Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

lefantome89: When can we expect a new build with new features? it's been a while.

Fallen_Zen: We're working on a new release with a lot of new features and bug fixes but we don't have a release date set yet.
Not this week that's for sure.
Oooooooooooooo! Features! And the nailbiting suspense begins! ;oP I wont hound y'all as to what they are but will definitely be anticipating it! :)

One thing I want to mention that just came to mind, is one of the features I like about the Steam client is that it tracks your gameplay time to give you an estimate as to how many hours/minutes you've spent playing a given title. In reality it isn't completely accurate as it appears to time the amount of time the executable has been running whether or not a game is started, paused to make dinner, fallen asleep at the wheel, etc. but it is still a nice guestimate to have. I wish they would enhance it to keep track of whether you're using the mouse/keyboard/joypad at all to try to guestimate actual gameplay time, but there are game specific complexities with that that would have inaccuracies as well. Needless to say, I would be very happy to see this type of feature show up in the Galaxy client even if it is implemented simplistically as it is in Steam.

One reason I say this is that a month or two ago GOG posted something on Facebook or similar mentioning some game or another and asking people what the longest game time they had in it was or something to that effect. Sorry I don't remember enough of the specifics or I'd post the URL or something. :) Anyhow, my gut reaction when I read it was "How on earth am I supposed to know that, you don't keep track of my gaming time, or did you want me to play my games with Steam to find out?" :oP

I was of course kind to keep my thoughts to myself instead of on Facebook, although they are intended to be tongue in cheek in jest even though it is true per se. :) There is no way to know how many hours you have played a GOG bought game that I'm aware of right now unless you run a stopwatch while playing and pause it when you get up to eat/poop/whatever so... if it's not already on your feature list, consider it a suggestion to add. :) I can file an RFE in mantis if you like, just let me know. :) Don't make people buy games on Steam to tell you how much game time they have in the game! :)

Anyhow... looking forward to the next incarnation... :)

It is indeed a nice feature but I would like to keep it for myself. In Steam if you have a public or semipublic (for your friends) profilay you crecreae anyone is able to see how much did you play the games you have been playing in the last two weeks and from the day you created your account. I'd like to be able to set which things I share and which things I don't.

Yeah, I've got a strong preference for fine grained privacy/visibility controls also in general with just about everything although in the case of Steam, I have chosen to make my profile more visibly public which is something I don't normally do with anything. :)

This feature is definitely coming to the Galaxy Client, not in the upcoming release but eventually it will be there.
Just applied for the closed client beta. Wish everyone the best of luck. Is GoG still sending out email invites?

Thanks
Oliver

They'll probably send out a new wave once the next update hits.
The FEAR platinum collection expansions cannot be launched through the client.

Edit: You can you have to click the more button. Would appreciate if there were different play buttons. ;)

Good to hear. I kind of figured it might due to reading between the lines with things showing in the existing client but it's good to see confirmation of that. :)
So, does anyone have a list of games that are currently compatible with the alpha client?

exosquadron: So, does anyone have a list of games that are currently compatible with the alpha client?
I'm sure we could get one. Most of mine (103 of 130) are working.

I have about 350 out of 460 games working on Galaxy, so the ones that aren't compatible would be the smaller list. I noticed that most of the missing titles are games with multiple titles in one gamecard (Descent 1+2, Police Quest Swat 1+2, etc.). I think this is why GOG started giving us multiple shelf entries when we buy new bundled games (we now get 3 shelf spots for Mortal Kombat 1+2+3, 2 for Ys I + II, etc., and these do appear on Galaxy).

First I am sorry for being asshole and not reading all posts in topic, but it is really too much. I just wanted to ask the question about multiplayer games and servers. Will gog add servers for the games they host? For instance Unreal Tournament?
I just thought I'd chip in with a thought or two I had about future development.

For the planned standalone installer download:
1. Ability to specify a default folder. When the game is downloaded, a folder is then created below the default folder for the installer file itself. (I'm sure you already thought of this, but just being completist. :) )
2. Option to download/save the standalone installer automatically when you choose to install from Galaxy.
3. Ability to save incremental patches for games.
4. Option to download/save incremental patches automatically when games update in Galaxy.

3. and 4. obviously depend on how you are managing patches, but it would be useful to have the incremental files to save having to re-download everything if you have to reinstall and have limited downloads. A rigorous naming convention would also be needed, to keep the files logically "link". :)

Can't wait to see the finished product. Thanks GoG.
