Basically a remake which tried too much to be both a remake and different enough.
My main issue with it is that it doesn't take place on Earth, which kind of ruins it for me.

Anyone here played Genesis Rising and Light of Altair? How good are they?

I never managed to make Light of Altair DEMO install without issues, so I don't know. You can try the demo and find out for yourself.
Been a while since I played ET without BMan's mod (the Gold version, technically), but I don't think you had infinite soldiers. Had to go with smaller teams a few times after screwing up. That being said, I don't think you could manually buy your soldiers.
That being said:
Compared to After*, insanely faithful and hardcore XCOM game.
Compared to XCOM itself, your mileage may vary. Good game that I love (and there are plenty of mods that make it even more XCOMy), but it is a sequel to a game that a lot of people wanted a sequel to. So no matter what, people will complain.
