We probably had at least one thread like this already, but since I can't find it, why not start another. What games do you know that come with their own level or campaign editor, or can be modded into a whole new game with different story or level design? And how much quality content is available for it?

For example (in brackets the perceived amount of good custom adventures available for it):

Games with campaign/adventure editors (amount of custom adventures):

- FR Unlimited Adventures (huge)
- Neverwinter Nights (huge)
- Neverwinter Nights 2 (large)
- Fight the Dragon (huge, selection in-game)
- Shadowrun Returns ( [url=http://www.nexusmods.com/shadowrunreturns/mods/searchresults/?src_cat=5]of, no idea about quality)
- Shadowrun Dragonfall DC (few)
- Divinity: Original Sin (no idea)
- Dragon Age: Origins (no idea)
- Blades of Avernum (couple of, no idea about quality)
- Driftmoon (next to none, sadly)
- The Witcher (no idea)
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent (no idea)
- Legend of Grimrock (greater)
- Tomb Raider Chronicles (greater)
- Warcraft 3 (no idea)
- Starcraft 2 (no idea)
- Spellforce 2 (no idea)
- Bard's Tale Construction Set (no idea)
- Adventurezator: When Pigs Fly (very few)
- Eschalon Book III (?)
- Torchlight
- Torchlight 2
- VVVVVV (Free Make and Play Version)
- DROD (greater)
- DROD RPG (couple of)
- Heroes of Might and Magic 4 onwards
- Freedom Force
- Mount & Blade
- Tales of Maj'Eyal
- Titan Quest
- Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business (Urban Chaos, Deidrianna Lives)
- Jagged Alliance 2 + 1.13 mod (AIMNAS)
- Kivi's Underworld
- Unreal Tournament
- Creeper World 3

Games with level editors (from what I've read)
- Rise of the Triad (2013)
- Duke Nukem 3D
- Portal 2
- Qbeh-1: The Atlas Cube
- Wrack
- Battleblock Theater
- MouseCraft
- Escape Goat
- McPixel
- Ichi
- Wyv and Keep: The Temple of the Lost Idol
- Aquaria
- Super Meat Boy
- Braid
- Stealth Bastard Deluxe
- Stealth Inc.
- Hotline Miami 2 (upcoming?)
- Dustforce
- Voxatron
- Blocks That Matter
- Octodad: Deadliest Catch
- Unreal Tournament (UT99)
- Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT2k4)
- Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3)

Games with total conversion mod compatibility (remarkable examples):
- TES III: Morrowind (Arktwend)
- TES IV: Oblivion (Nehrim)
- Risen (Neuland, German & Russian only)
- Deus Ex (The Nameless Mod)
- Half-Life 2 (The Stanley Parabel)
- Doom 3 (The Dark Mod, turned stadalone)
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl (...)

Unsure where to put these (if you know about them, please provide info on whether they come with their own easy-to-use editor or whether they can only be modified by knowledgable modders, and what they allow to change, and possibly add links to custom adventures/levels/maps):
- Blood 2 (with the expansion)
- Civilization 2
- Civilization 3
- Civilization 4
- Crysis
- Dink Smalwood
- Dungeon Siege
- Dungeon Siege 2
- F.E.A.R.
- Max Payne 1
- Max Payne 2
- Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
- Rayman Gold
- The Settlers: Rise Of An Empire
- Age of Wonder: Shadow Magic,
- Sins of a solar empire
- Galactic Civilization 2
- Battle for Wesnoth
- Far Cry
- Far Cry 2
- Far Cry 3
- Gateways
- Hatred
- Painkiller
- Painkiller: Resurrection
- Rage
- Serious Sam 1 (Original and HD, First and Second encounter)
- Serious Sam 2
- Serious Sam 3
- Shadowgrounds
- Toki Tori 2+
- Tower Wars

If anyone knows of the best places to look for custom modules, links would be appreciated, too. I've seen there are adventures for The Witcher, Dragon Age and Divinity: Original Sin on Nexus, but it doesn't seem like those lists are complete, so I wonder if there are any more official sites or specific pages of the according modding communities.

Doom is an obvious choice here.
You mentioned NWN have a campaign editor but I'm pretty sure it also has at least one total conversion Mod.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl (and I belive the following games).

Certainly fits the latter, and considering the mod potential, I'd reckon the former too!

Does Doom come with a level editor or are the custom levels modded? Is there a site that lists all the available custom levels, or can you name a particularly good or highly acclaimed one?

Never heard of that, what do you mean? I know there are mods to give the OC a somewhat different look, but I don't know of any that completely changes the story or level design, and if there was, how would that be different from a custom campaign made with the editor? To be clear, I'm not looking to list modifications, only completely new adventures.

Interesting! Does it have some story mods that can be run completely independent of the original campaign (as opposed to just adding to it)? If so, do you know of a good one?

Shit, I looked it up and I was thinking of NWN 2 which you pointed out already.

Actually, its one of the few on the list that IS an entirely standalone mod (WAS going to be an official release but leask fucked it!).
That is, you dont need any stalker game to run it. BUT - if you havent played the other first, you are entirely ruining the experience of the "new" game (which was based on a mix of the original design documents / builds and the player to developer expectations).

However, before I post the link - please mentione it in context, as its intended only for long time fans of the series, and as a standalone can devalue all the other good stuff because of people who just "O____o... FREE GAME!" and then troll because they have "played the stalker series".

there is also an SDK available (currntly still beta I believe).

The Dark Mod
Maybe not as good as Nehrim, but Morrowind has Arktwend. Made by the same guys.

For map editors with a lot of content I immeadieatly think of Warcraft III, but I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. They have some nice RPG maps and other stuff and spawned an entire new Genre with one of their fun maps. Though at least in the storytelling department I don't know anything great for it.

Sure, why not. Are the RPG maps story-oriented? Is it possible to tell stories with the editor in general (e.g. add text events)?
CREEPER WORKD 3!!!!!!!

If you ever played the game: you can do anything that happened in the campaign with the map editor

If you didn't: you can let massages spawn over the screen based on events. You can let text spawn over a units head. You can create real-time cutscenes. You can use a quest log. There are also custom campaigns though I never played them.

And you have a good amount of stuff to work with for RPGs since the game already had a levelable hero unit with skills, stats and inventory. I've also seen some interisting changes to the system in general you can do with the editor.

But as I said, most of the maps(at least what I played) are more about gameplay than story.

Age of Wonder Shadow Magic,
Heroes of Might and Magic 4 onwards
Sins of a solar empire
Galactic Civilization 2 no idea about 1 or 3
A few other games:

Freedom Force
Mount & Blade
Tales of Maj'Eyal
Titan Quest
Torchlight (not just the second one)
Why are there no Unreal Tournament games on that list?
