Could you write a short guide for the workaround into the game's forum? Maybe a moderator can pin it even.

Missing directories usually shouldn't be a problem, but sometimes they are :)

bluethief: Just came across this tweet from Mike Rose from No More Robots (Yes, Your Grace, Nowhere Prophet) that I think it's relevant for this thread:

https://twitter.com/RaveofRavendale/status/1459196810820476940
In other words, "we're just in it for the money".
And not having clients to accomodate would get rid of that problem, as it'd just be one standard build available everywhere...

the tweet: "If I'm truly honest, no PC store outside of Steam has *ever* been worth maintaining for us. That's why we've ended up dropping a lot of them (eg GOG) over the years -- the hassle of having to continue to provide them with updates, with sales inevitably circle the drain, is eugh"

very unfortunate but makes sense - most everyone wants all their games in one place on Steam and Steam's features.

"Imagine a store making 1% of sales, and your game has been out for a while, so sales have gotten slower. By that point, the hassle and work of updating stores outside of Steam, can sometimes literally cost more to handle than the actual sales that come from that store"

thus GOG died and we cried and snied :p

To be fair, they're a business company... And Mike Rose has gone on record stating that he thinks Steam's 30 % revenue cut is worth it because of the analytics and the user base/traffic they provide.

So yes, No More Robots ARE only in it for the money and they wouldn't WANT to get rid of the problem by ditching the client requirement because clients like Steam allow them to use powerful analytics to steer their sales. At least he's honest about that, I guess...

I mean, if devs like Mike Rose think that selling their games Steam-exclusive is the best move for them, I totally accept that. Sell your games wherever you want, they're YOUR games, after all.

But what's not acceptable is selling your game on a bunch of storefronts, knowing from the beginning that sales outside of Steam will NEVER measure up to Steam, and then acting all surprised that you'll need to invest time and money to keep updating these games even after they sell poorly. We live in an age where it's become commonplace for games to be released in a state where they REQUIRE constant patching for years afterwards, so any dev/publisher worth their salt should plan with that in mind.

Wasn't this 1% thing mentioned by a dev that had his game here but never cared to promote any other versions besides Steam?

Makes you miss the good old days when we would go to the developers homepage to download a patch for our disc version.

I'm just glad I didn't buy anything from these guys yet (and now I never will). If they think taking care of existing customers is not worth their money, THEY are not worth MY money.

To me the most interesting part of that discussion is how he mentioned EGS (Epic Games Store) sales are 1% of that of Steam.

So... is it only Fortnite and backing by eastern investors (owners?) which are keeping EGS alive for now?

Kinda "glad" to see it is not only GOG.com in that alleged "1% club".

He actually mentioned that 1% when comparing Steam sales to Epic Games Store sales. So yeah, it seems EGS is not that great a place to release games either, then...

After reading some posts : It seems people more care about stupid achievements than real game updates .

I recall someone once said that what Steam did was 'make DRM fun' with their achievements, trading cards, and all that other vendor lock-in dreck. =\ And people say that Valve isn't "monopolistic like Epic" because they don't pay for their (many) exclusives. Obviously, with devs and publishers like this, they never have to, they're not out of their 'effin minds.

Rant over, and to get back on topic, the developer of Interstellaria is looking into getting the game updated on GOG.
https://twitter.com/ColdRice_Dev/status/1457432257577164805
Interestingly, the dev seems to have created a GOG profile last year, and even used the Build Creator, but the game still hasn't been updated in 5 years. I wonder if they're having technical or publisher trouble with getting the updates here.

MarkoH01: You might refer to this thread. I have to say that I am still surprised that a perfectly subjective opinion could be stated as a fact even though it is not (it only would be if nobody would enjoy achievements which isn't the case) but sure .... anyway, that's not the topic here.

No matter if missing/broken achievements can or should be considered second class treatment this isn't the right thread for it. Alexim is collecting those here:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/list_of_broken_gog_achievements/page1

ChrisG_: Not sure it's that one.

Opinions has nothing to do with this, it has been said like a hundred times that this thread does not track missing achievements not to mention it would dilute the thread from more severe issuses.
Secondly with this logic people who refuse to use Galaxy relegate themselves to being second citizens because they can't access galaxy integrated achievements and thirdly no one stated anything as facts and if you read it as such then add thread after the word treatment in my first sentence for better context since it was strictly in relation to this thread.
Oh sorry, I completely misread you last post. I thought you meant that there was another thread that explained why missing achievements should not be counted as second class treatment at all (which is what the thread I linked to is doing). In fact you only said that this is the wrong thread to post such missing achievements and that there's another one that lists those. My sencere apologies for reading your words so completely wrong.

avatar
ChrisG_: The only time i can see no achievements being perceived as second class is if the steam version has no drm to begin with otherwise you simply value achievements higher than DRM itself which is pretty ridiculous but if that's your or anyone elses opinion than it is your opinion matter how flawed the arguments for it may be.
Good point - but I wonder if we actually could count "DRM-free" as a feature at all since if we do nearly very Steam game would be second class then in the first place. I guess the real question is if achievements can be counted as being "part of the game" or not. Here the opinions differ widely. But no matter if they do or not, missing achievements are collected in another list, so there's no need to discuss this here.

Missing achivement should have a list for those interested in that yes even though i personally disagree that it is second class treatment and i still think DRM/Achievements can be compared as equals even if no DRM isn't technically a feature since the actually issue people are raising is indeed Galaxy integrated ones and not those unllockable in the actual games if the games may even have them which i can't see as being "in game" if you need the client.

An idea i was pointing to is having the lists to be easier to follow and having one tracking severe issues like actual game impacting ones listing missing updates, content DLC, missing multiplayer and one called lesser issues tracking not only achievements but artbook, soundtrack and OS support in another thus making them somewhat condensed and easier to follow, now you have to move left.right far too much to follow all issues in a single thread.

tfishell: "the hassle of having to continue to provide them with updates"
We're living in the fucking 2021, software is built by automated CI pipelines. Surely it's easy for the devs to produce the binaries of the game - you set up the build server (and you need to do that for the initial release anyway), and then you push a tag to repository, and in a few minutes the server makes the binary for you, right? What hassle are they talking about?

This guy is obsessed with the graphs on the earnings of his games, the only thing he talks about all the time is how to maximize earnings and what moves to make to take as much money as possible with as little effort as possible.

It's already a miracle if we managed to get him to release the missing DLCs on GOG, and at the time he accused GOG of preventing him from releasing them.

So we must be extremely happy to know that he'll never again come to GOG with new "games" from his company.

This. Will never buy a game from him, luckily I have not bought the other games here.

It is not hard to publish the games late here, but then finished. So he would only have to make ONE final build and never need to update something again.

If he does not want to do even THAT, he is a completely lost cause for me.
