What games have you seen that lived up to big hype, even if there was no big hype but they would have lived up to big hype had there been big hype...???
I remember there being a lot of buzz about Diablo 2 and, safe to say, it delivered.
Complete series M&M.Yep! All of them.....yeah yeah,I know.
Portal.

Edit : And others.

Fallout and Fallout 2. System Shock 2, Deus Ex, for real. NOLF got hyped after I played it, but deservingly so.

Back then, Elite and Populous were terrific and legendary. Dune 2 as well, for its time. Homeworld is hyped, and is indeed perfect. Sands of Time deserves its reputation, even if, again, it may have acquired it in retrospect. Same with Blade Runner - if they tell you it's good, believe them.

These early Lucasarts games : Monkey Island, Loom, Maniac Mansion, Sam and Max, Last Crusade, etc. They had earned their reputation.

Arx Fatalis would have deserved more hype. And I don't remember if Morrowind (and Gothic 2) had benefitted from the one it deserved.

Also, that Sid Meier guy had good reasons to wish his name attached to Pirates, Covert Action, Civilization (though he maybe should have called "sid meier's starships" just "starships")... Heck, Silent Service was awesome.

And, not a very popular opinion, but I'm of those who consider that the first Far Cry and the first Assassin's Creed were groundbreakingly excellent.

what is M&M?
GTA San Andreas is the game I've been most hyped for by far. I posted on forums, checked back constantly for every scrap of news, visited the promotional sites, watched the trailers over and over, replayed Vice City... and when I finally got the game, it actually lived up to the expectations. It was a magical thing. Wish I could say the same about GTA4 but I wasn't nearly as hyped and reusing Liberty City again did it no favors for me.

I gotta say, as cliche as it might sound. The witcher 3. The game had so muhc hype and for me it seemed to have popped up out of nowhere. I thoroughly enjoyed the game though, I had originally bought it on steam but when I heard about GOG I had to get it again, this time with all the DLC.
There are too many games too list that I think manage to live up to their hype. But if we're talking about games that I knew were hyped for a some time before I got round to playing it, and then imo lived up the hype? Off the top of my head:
GTA 3 : SA
Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis
Batman Arkham Asylum
Fallout 1 & 2
FTL
Planescape Torment
Psychonauts
Prince of Persia : Sands of Time
Dwarf Fortress
WoW (up to a point - especially vanilla content)
Firewatch

Didn't know anything about it until the 10th anniversary sale. The game was mentioned, on the forum, a few time and I decided to pick it up. Just finished it and was not disappointed.
Indie productions:
Grim Dawn
Darkest Dungeon
Into The Breach
The Witness
Wasteland 2

AAA games:
Tomb Raider
DOOM
Borderlands
Skyrim
Civilization IV

flatiron: what is M&M?
1. A chocolate candy brand. I like the ones with nuts in them.

2. Might&Magic 1-9, an old classic RPG-lite series. I've finished M&M 6-8 and liked them quite a bit.

i loved it

if that makes me a giant butthead, so be it. :P
Most games from Sierra, LucasArts, Sid Meier, and Geoff Crammond back in the day.

These days, I'm not sure. Amanita Design, maybe?
Hard to really judge about a game having lived up to hype if there was hype, but there wasn't any hype- because that purely depends on the hype. But people seem to be taking your question mostly in that way.

However, I've got to say, I can't think of a single game that lived up to actual hype that was created BEFORE it was released.
Those games have, without fail, ALWAYS disappointed. So I usually ignore hype. ESPECIALLY for teasers, trailers and big showcases. Those are absolutely irrelevant to the final game.
