wpegg: The DK1 vs DK2 debate is definitely a very personal thing. There are several long threads on the DK forum about it, but I suppose whichever one you pick, my main point stands. In all this time, despite variations on the theme such as Evil Genius, or attempts to directly emulate it like Dungeons 2, or War for the Overworld, DK just starts appearing better and better.
It would have been fun to try out a DK1 or DK2 but they were too low resolution/pixelated to put out the money for something that'd become obsolete and unsupported in a few years rather quickly, so I decided to wait until the final consumer model came out instead, but now that the pricing has been published and it is ridiculously high, I decided that I'll have to pass on it for a few years until they can bring the price down to a reasonable level. :)
Apart from the many games that have been improved by upgrades and fixes, mods and source-ports there are those were the lack (or failing) of a (worthy) successor/competitor made it more obvious how brilliant those game are/have been.

For me Morrowind, Master of Magic and Master of Orion 2 fall into this category.

so I thought it would be interesting to start one for games that have done the opposite. Games that for one reason or another are actually better now than they were on release. Preferably older games, since most any release nowadays falls into that catagory.

I'll start: Daikatana

This isn't to say that Daikatana is good, but the unlimited saves and improved AI added by patches are what make it playable. Particularly the unlimited saves. I just got through chapter 1, and the last third would have been basically impossible if I wasn't able to save before opening every door.
I have to agree with you about Daikatana, especially when you use the manmade v1.3 patch. It actually makes it fun.
Actually what just occurred to me was something more mundane of a proper definition for this. A game's quality can be controlled to help with performance, usually graphics extra options (be they fog, blur, AA, meshes&textures, lighting, shadows, etc). Games that were meant for big gaming rigs but could be played on budget PC's would be perfect for this, since you'd play on low settings. THEN over the years when you got a better PC you'd crank up the graphics quality. Literally the game got better because technology was better (and cheaper), not because the game was changed or patched.

One example i think of is Diablo 2, which looked fairly good as i recall, but i almost ALWAYS played it using direct draw and 256 colors. However I've also seen it run on 24bit color with 3D perspective and extra options on. To this effect games that had multiple graphics card settings also would be a good qualification in old DOS days, where CGA was common (Lemmings, Commander Keen, etc), then people had VGA and the 16-256 colors was a huge leap forward vs the 4 colors they were getting before.

Now putting all that, patches that make the game actually work and fun to play are probably all good and well, but it's hard to say if it makes a game like Daikatana worth playing regardless. I remember the intro and it was so horrible, looked like a really badly done PS1 game.

Ooh what kind of mods would you recommend? I vastly prefer Morrowind (I played it both vanilla and slightly modded) because of the interesting landscapes, various wonderful random encounters on your travels, the quests and of course, non-monotonuous landscape. Oblivion - "rock, rock, grassy plain, rock rock, hey it's a forest! Tree, tree, tree, rock here and there, rock, rock, plain again.".

End of Chaper 1 is still legitimately awful, but I've been having quite a bit of fun with the game since then.
