Are mods allowed? There is Piratez, a mod for OpenXcom.
Since this thread was opened before GOG began selling X-COM: UFO Defense and X-COM: Terror from the Deep, I feel I should point out that these games are now available from GOG. The original poster never specified whether he wanted similar games because he had tired of X-COM but liked the style or if he wanted similar games because he could not get access to X-COM itself.

Also, as mentioned several times in the thread announcing that GOG now sells the X-COM games, there is an open source clone OpenXcom that requires original game data, but is overall a much better implementation of the UFO Defense engine than the DOS-based version sold back then. It runs in a larger window, fixes numerous bugs, and provides nice UI enhancements while remaining true to the style of the original game. The in-development next version of OpenXcom adds support for TFTD too. It is available for play in the nightlies.

Dash95: I'm playing it right now, a great game.

awalterj: Glad to hear you're having fun with the game. Robotality just announced their next game a couple days ago:

Pathway: In Search of the Lost Element

Pathway will be released next year and I'm already excited about it. Love the 1930s setting. Looks amazing, I'm not easily swayed these days (haven't bought a game in over 6 months) but this will be a sure purchase if they release it on GOG which I'm most certain they will.
WE need more games with alien things on 19XX.

I want to play a game like "XCOM: Bureau Classified?" but as a normal XCOM.

Nice. I hoped for a sequel to Halfway, but this one sounds great too.

I've created a wishlist entry: https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/pathway_in_search_of_the_lost_element

Matewis: Shadow Company but I don't know it it's any good. Looks fun though
Oh... I played it once with a friend. But I don't remember when and who was he! Seems like a good game Commandos but more 3D thing.

Cartoon one, seems good.

Yeah, why not.

When it comes to turn-based squad games, I've really enjoyed Omerta. I't not half as bad as most reviews say.
A cross between Commandos + Xcom would be precisely Gorky 17. But its replay value is relatively low.

The most awesome game close to original Xcom is Jagged Alliance 2, to be played with 1.13 mod (!), also very recommended to expand it with larger maps like WF6 map mod or AMINAS. It works on Linux. This is my personal opinion, but I would recommend to stay clear of JA2: Wildfire. Its just went all way wrong and lack of customization make it inferior in all ways possible.

Thats a cool recommendation! Played OpenXcom: TFTD maps and really liked it (although superhuman+hiddeous AI is clearly cheating :P).

mistermumbles: Interesting. I really should give Halfway another try. I really liked the little I played of it... and then I got distracted by newer shinies. Story of my gaming life. =/
We live in an age of plenty gaming-wise which is one of the main reasons I use low-end hardware, it limits options in the new shinies high maintenance category :)

Thanks for making a wishlist, I'm the glorious 2nd vote of the 3 votes so far!

I also expected a sequel to Halfway but after seeing the screenshots to Pathway, I'm sold on their new project. Great news for those who didn't like the hit chance system is that this feature will be replaced in Pathway by a non-random hit system. Random hit chances were the main complaint about Halfway. This makes me want to eat my monitor:

And Arulco Revisited! That's what I'm on atm, and it's a total blast

How's the AI cheating in TFTD? or do you mean only on superhuman?

Dunno, if only at superhuman (always played only on superhuman), but AI really knows where you are and especially Tentaculat is waiting very exactly in the alien basement for you to step in certain range, after which it goes into attack. If you are not in that range, it does not attack. There is no direct eye contact. So the only way to solve this, is to "open the can" with disruptor pulse, and also after reloading. And this sucks great time, because it degrades gameplay. Never had this in original xcom/tftd.

Also, the Triscene on ship terror missions is overspawned and overpowered. In original they were funny, as they typically spawned on second mission part, at higher level decks locked inside rooms - typically no more than 4. In openxcom, they spawn 8-12, freeroam around corridors, blasting walls with their guns, get out easily and use elevators. Once one of them just para-dropped literally on the head of my team from above, exactly at spawn point. But all this is just amusing, but not a big game breaker.

Speaking of amusing, in original I once had a "floating" Xarquid in same mission (terror against ship, second half) floating inside theater... in the air. This bug is not present in openxcom.

Its not like Ja2, Ja2 has simply awesome AI (WF6 AI is also quite good, but gun choices sux). They talk over radio, go searching, hide in corners, go to last spot instead of cheatishly rushing against your team.
I really enjoyed S2: Silent Storm, want to go back to it for a challenge playthrough, attempting to finish it with one sniper only. Wasn't aware of Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, that rests in my wishlist now.

Beginning at turn 20, the AI knows where you are. AFAIK that's the only “cheating“ that the AI does.
Xenonauts, hands down. It is an amazing turn-based XCOM-clone. It's the kind of game where you get hooked and sit up until 6 AM every time you play it :) Just like XCOM, you'll get addicted to completing missions, researching new equipment, starting new missions to test out your new equipment, and so on :P It is very true to the XCOM-formula.

Well, I tested this over and over. Just exact distance away from the closed door and - tentaculat chases. Not inside the distance, it does not react at all, regardless what happens. The autofire for melee in openxcom makes the whole thing much more difficult.
