The Jacket. I didn't actually go into the theater with any expectations (because I'd never heard of it) but I nearly walked out of the theater about 20 minutes in.

I am REALLY glad I stayed.
Flyboys was one I saw recently. Thought it was just going to be another boring war movie with lots of history and narration to be true to history. It was actually a thoughtful movie with lots of character development that was somehow still true to the historical narrative.

NuffCatnip: Really ? I thought it´s one of his movies that had a certain charm to it. :D
The one in which he has to take care of his exes son was okay as well. Forgot the movies name though.

InfraSuperman: Yeah, most people despise that film (personally, I have to agree with them) and generally cite it as one of Adam Sandler's most obnoxious performances, largely due to the "funny" voice he does in it.
To each their own. :)
I for example detest the Hunger Games movies, an oppinion not that many share with me. :D

Back to the movie; I can understand those that say he is irritating in that movie.

ShadowPatriarch: Hopefully you have already seen the Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End. If not add them to your list as well. :)
Hot Fuzz I didn't find that special, haven't seen the other ones. Thrown onto the list! Thanks.

Martek: Pitch Black.

I went expecting a (relatively) low-budget B-movie.

But, from the excellent opening sequence until the very end it turned out to be a very good story with great character development.
^Totally this :)

To name a few i can remember:

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

Salinui chueok (2003)

Kukushka (2002)

Conviction (2010)

My Life Without Me (2003)

Triangle (2009)

Once (2007)
Barney's Version (2010)

Went expecting usual the Paul Giamatti comic/drama, turns out to be my favourite film.

Against the Current (2009)

Expected nothing, also became one of my favourites.
How about this- Michael Mann's most unpopular movie- The Keep. From the description I expected a B grade horror, and not a very good one. It turned out to be, in my opinion, something absolutely superb. The cast is great, and they deliver great performances. Jurgen Prochnow and Gabriel Byrne just kill it. The soundtrack by Tangerine Dream is the stuff of legends, one of the best I've ever heard. And the visuals are something eerie, moody and haunting. Combined, they give the movie a fantastic, dreamlike atmosphere, turn it into a symbolic nightmare of the war. I know most people hate it, including the author of the original novel, but in my book it's a masterpiece. I loved every single second of it. God, Michael Mann was phenomenal in the 80s and 90s.

That movie was ruined for me because good or bad the book was AWESOME and I read the book first which made any chance of the movie working impossible.
The Matrix

One of the most intelligent, insightful, action-packed, thought-provoking movie ever made.

Work of pure creative genius.
Terminator Genisys

Just got it for a buck as a rental a couple of months back so I thought: Why not? and I must say I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. It certainly is vastly superior than part 3 & Salvation. I also like that it pretends those movies never happened, instead only acknowledging the original 2.

And then they went on to make that drivel that is part 2 & 3. Yea, okay, so the fight scenes were pretty entertaining throughout. That courtyard fight scene with the ever-replicating Agent Smith was particularly fun. Unfortunately the story and plot took a complete nosedive in comparison. Let's just make everything more convoluted just for the sake of it.

If a film I had decided to dislike turned out to be good, I wouldn't admit it, ever.
Someone mentioned the old Fright Night already, but I saw the 2011 remake a few months ago. I had low expectations but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

Also Odd Thomas. Not sure but I think maybe it did badly in the reviews because of the guys who had read the book(s) and were expecting something different, but I haven't read them so just took the movie as it was and I really liked it. I think it's better than what a lot of the reviews make it out to be as a standalone movie.

Hunter65536: Doesn't Jack and Jill exist in this timeline? If so it seems like I've escaped the darkest timeline.
I'm sorry to disappoint, but it does also exist here. Judgment is still out on which one of those two films is worse, although most people would agree that both are awful.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I did expect a mess but it was good comedy.
Hopefully it was intended to be comedy.

Had no expectations going in to see Galaxy Quest - it was one of those, "Eh, why not?" rentals. Loved it.

I thought The Fifth Element was going to be good in a 'this is so bad it's good' sort of way. Nope, it's just plain good.
