The Grand Budapest Hotel

Superb movie with a peculiar but interesting and rather original cinematography.

These past few months, I see more and more good quality sci-fi movies and it really pleases me because I thought we were lost in super-mecha-heroic-madness.

Last one I saw was Automata. It really has this Blade Runner vibe : not as a copy, yes as an inspiration, but more importantly the setting is kind of based on those 'sociological postulates' which I think are a great starting point for clever sci-fi (in the greatest Asimovian tradition dare I say).
Now film makers just have to find new ways to end movies outside of the three or four hollywoodian canons :-p

madth3: Edge Of Tomorrow]
I know this is an old post and that this is a thread I never go on, but does anyone else find it odd/kind of... I don't know... weird I guess that what was pretty much the only Japanese character was turned into a not Japanese character. I mean... I know why they did it, but... I don't know... kinda lame of them. Bearing in mind: I have a passive interest of this book/movie and never got up the determination to get into it. Also, why is the American was turned British? I guess I could just watch the movie if Tom Cruise wasn't in it. Also, All You Need Is Kill is an awesome title that might have put the movie in experimental viewing territory, but Edge of Tomorrow is sort of an expected title to a cookie cutter action/sci-fi movie.
Tom Cruise is starring in a lot of aliens attack the earth movies lately, I thought it must had something to do with his scientology worshipping (Battlefield Earth =D).

Anyway, last recommendations from me go to The Rover, this is a slow movie but Guy Pierce is in top form and I figure this movie is what Mad Max would look like if it really happened.

On another note, did anyone see Uwe Boll's Rampage movies? I don't think they were terribly good/bad but the message of them especially in the last one is pretty evokative.
Is Uwe Boll just crazy or does he have more balls than the entire movie industry put together?
I thought Escape Plan was pretty good.

Won't spoil it, but it could of focused a little more on the 'how' then the 'why', but still good.

jefequeso: Bronson

Ugly, pointless, and most damning of all, dull. I wouldn't necessarily say it was a bad movie, but it seemed utterly empty and lifeless, without any ultimate substance to justify it.
Agreed. Just too damn hard to get interested. Comparisons to A Clockwork Orange are well off the mark. Did not watch till the end which is rare for me.

Another I found hard to watch was Red State. The sermons went on far too long and it was all such a bore (or should that be snore).

John Dies at the End - had never heard of this one and picked up on a whim - turned out to be pretty good actually :D
Saw Interstellar.
For once I am short on words.
Specthaïkular.
night at the museum 3

It was pretty good; a great end to a good series. I liked that they focused more on story than on visuals this time, specifically in the feels department. Also, they go inside an MC Escher painting.
Birdman.

Actors at the top of their game, cracking dialogue, clever camera and direction, reminds me of 70's era when movies were actually good. Probably be another friggin 40 years for another one this good, best movie I have seen in a long time.
Shane
I just watched Dr. Strangelove with my girlfriend for her first time. She loved it. Probably my 15th time or something like that. It's still great, and always will be.
TRON + TRON: Legacy

I finally saw the original TRON. I recall hearing about the movie when I was a small kid, playing the TRON arcade game to death, even playing TRON 2.0 later in my life etc., but never having a chance to see the movie for some reason, until now. If I read right, the movie didn't do that well financially, which might be why it "vanished"? Or was it Disney's long-time reluctance to release some of its movies on VHS, DVD etc.?

Too bad, because I was super-interested in it back then, and now I'm sure I would have loved the movie. It was pretty good even today, and some of the special effects were still pretty good. It didn't leave me with an awkward feeling at any point due to laughable effects or anything. Well ok, those foam costumes looked a bit ridiculous, even with neon-light effects...

It was pretty ok otherwise too, and I liked how the movie didn't seem to have any clear (one) protagonist, but e.g. Flynn and TRON fought side by side. I mean, that one guy was dating the ex-girlfriend of Flynn,,, I found it refreshing that it didn't end up with the new boyfriend being a jealous baddie, or at least dying, and Flynn hooking up again with the ex-girlfriend.

Albeit, I don't know what to think that she kissed both men during the movie...? Oh the Reagan-era 80s, free sex and all, before AIDS and herpes conquered the world. EDIT: Technically speaking, was that his ex-girlfriend at all, or merely the program-equivalent of it? Hmm, confusing, I don't recall for sure...

After that I watched TRON: Legacy. I think I've seen it at least partly during some long flight, but I didn't understand much as I could hear shit in the plane, and there were no subtitles, even in English. I probably didn't watch it all the way to the end due to that.

Legacy was better than i expected, mainly because earlier I've heard people panning it only. Not sure why, overall I found it quite entertaining, even if cliched. Good looking chicks too, and I liked the music.

It was also good to have seen the original, as then some of the characters made a bit more sense, e.g. CLU and TRON, or the kid of the former (bad) CEO who you see only in the beginning of the movie, or that whole Boxleitner character (Flynn's closest friend in the first movie).

I also found it interesting how they made Jeff Lebowski look so young in that movie. Was he created digitally, no powder or botox? Could have fooled me, it looked almost like a real person, it says a lot that I have to ask.

Overall, three thumbs up. I liked them, nothing special but quite ok and entertaining for both.

Most recently watched Divergent. Went in expecting nothing (had no clue what it was about) and really enjoyed it.

Favorite of all time is likely the Village. (but that probably changes daily). Love the premise behind it and found the acting to be absolutely superb.

Most recent movie theater visits were to see Into the Woods, Mocking Jay, and Battle of 5 armies. Wasn't expecting into the woods to be ALL singing, so it took some adjusting, but was OK in my book. Not a fan of the Hobbit treatment, so I won't comment on that. Mocking Jay was really good, IMHO. If you can't get that song out of your head, I recommend a version you can at least run to:

Next, I'll likely see Paddington. Looks cute, but isn't high on the priority. Have tickets burning a hole in my pocket, so not sure I'll wait till something better comes along or not.
Favourite movie: Probably Blues Brothers or UHF.
Great movie I watched recently: Hercules. (I've been rewatching animated movies from my childhood lately) ;)
The Hill (1965) Starring Sean Connery, Ossie Davisand Harry Andrews. Shot in black and white with Sidney Lummet at the helm.

"In a British Army "glasshouse" (military detention camp) in the Libyan Desert, prisoners convicted of service offences such as insubordination, being drunk whilst on duty, going AWOL or petty theft etc. are subjected to repetitive drill in the blazing desert heat."

One of the Best films I have ever seen and I only just found it a few weeks ago. Perfection is coming from every angle; cinematography, acting, writing, directing. It shows you Sean Connery in a far less heroic role so typical of his other films at the time and tests his skills as an actor, he succeeds beautifully. Its a layered film with alot of complexity and heart with history to back it up.

Cannot recommend it enough.
