tinyE: When I leave this forum, the thing I'm going to miss most is darthspudius' whimsical easy going banter. :P

I like the idea.

Setting up international meeting during the clock change season is annoying. I have had emails about clients showing up an hour early.

But I don't want to stay in summertime!
And daylight saving time sucks.

MajicMan: Stuff that makes no sense to me...
See, this is what I don't get. Who cares what the label is? It makes sense to have a clock represent something we can agree upon. If 1pm or 12pm is when this sun is highest, that's fine.

What most of us hate about DST is that the time suddenly and dramatically changes. This, for most people, makes them tired. But it can be very bad for some. Young parents have children that don't know their sleeping patterns should have changed overnight. And many industries (Mine for instance) have time-sensitive devices that don't change time, so some people work all night tiwice a night to change hundreds of clocks of devices.

So who cares if a sunset is 730,. 830, or 630, so long as it's not jarring, people are fine.

That's how I see it anyway. Passionately. I'll gladly vote for anyone who will make our clocks make sense. I'll go on China time so long as it's non-jaring

Oh god. If they do this then my life will become so much more complicated, but on the bright side there'll be a much higher demand for programmers like me.

I work as a programmer for a commodities trading firm specifically in the energy markets. All power and gas is sold on a time basis, i.e. you'll trade a month or days worth of power. Every system, especially the one I'm working on has to account for DLS when processing trades, because you're trading more or less quantity on those days. Trades have already been made going many years into the future, systems are going to have to work out whether a trade was made under DLS conditions or not, and apply different logic depending on what happens. All calculations will need to be revisited , just about everything changed, rebuilt, redeployed. All our systems will need to be patched to have the new date logic in place. It's not just my line of work, Operating Systems, Database Management Systems, anything that models date and time, everything to do with computers is going to get a massive concrete object inserted into its backside.

This will make Y2K seem like a breeze.

Lifthrasil: Yep. I'm all for abolishing DST. It's a stupid idea. But I wouldn't be against making summer time the default. Sure, the astronomical time is winter time with the sun being in the Zenith at 12:00 ... but frankly, no one uses sundials anymore. So we might as well agree on midday being at 13:00h

Or stick with winter time, but start and finish work an hour earlier. Would be the same. But changing the clocks twice per year is just stupid.
To be honest, I think the second alternative sounds better, leaving noon at noon and still getting more sun in the evening, but I guess it isn't practical to implement.
Best news I've heard in aeons. :)
I'd love to get rid of it, but knowing our current government and the sort of people they listen to, there'd just be more "the EU is trying to get rid of our BST! Rah rah rah tradition blah blah blah history bluh bluh bluh blue passports".
I'd be all for it, but I'm also not part of a EU member state.

But yeah, screw DST, DSP, and STI.
I wouldn't mind as long as we stay in summer time.
Finally someone decided that there is no reason to change the time in modern times. It's very disturbing and can strongly complicate life. I hope it passes all the instances. Like many people here I'd prefer summer time. It's good to have more sunlight in the afternoon.
Yes, yes and yes, finally!

MajicMan: The Florida House of Reps has passed a bill to eliminate time changing and put Florida into the Daylight saving time all year round.

That would be awesome. I hope the east coast goes along and we all do it.

I hate "normal time" - which is odd for it to be called that considering we only stay on the winter clock for about 4 months.

What is the point of setting your clock so the sun comes up at 4 a.m. and goes down at 4 p.m.?

Let me enjoy more time to grill and sit out on the back porch to read and sip tea or enjoy a drink.
To be fair, up until recently, it was close to half a year long and is the time that it should be based upon GMT and the longitude of the time zone.

Still, it's stupid that we're still going it when it doesn't save energy and does somewhat increase accidents and deaths.
