I just watched this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVK4PAwT9fc

Can only partially relate though, I don't quite get how one can get addicted to something like League of legends when one actually has lots of friends and sexual intercourse.
Mutiplayer games always seem to be worst for those addictions, I'm glad I don't play them.
I can't get addicted to a game no matter how hard I try. After X amount of hours, I grow tired of any game. May sound silly, but I've tried to achieve that "state" (and then quit) just to understand the phenomena of gaming addiction, but with no success. I'm really curious about how people can play so many hours a day without getting bored out of their skull.

Is it perhaps a specific type of personality that is more prone to gaming addiction? Genetically pre-disposed?

Multiplayer games seem to be the worst, because they're so open-ended...with single-player games at least there's an ending.
I don't entirely get this kind of addiction either, but I've certainly used games as a means to procrastination and escapism from a depressing reality. I suppose addicts take that tendency to an extreme.
Finished the video now, fascinating and depressing at the same time.

I still find gaming addiction odd, especially multiplayer. It's stressful and exhausting, two hours of play is more than enough to make the brain mushy and screaming for variety. I have to go on a search engine information binge regarding this subject.

Same here, I can play a game excessively for like three months (depending on the content) and then I grow tired of it because I've cleared everything relevant and have mastered the mechanics. Obviously, single-player games don't last nearly as long.
It is persistant online games, stay away from those. Put me in any browser game for 2 days and I will be playing for months like a maniac. EVEN THOUGH I fully realise that the game is total crap and no fun at all.
I will simply not touch them anymore.
I used to be a massive game addict and I can still easily spend all my waking hours on a weekend playing a game if I can get into one.. problem is, I see right through these games now and they bore the guts out of me. I can see they're all about instant gratification (loot, exp, neverending trickle of "reward"). I see right through all that; it's not fun. It's just cheap and repetitive. I could write my own endless quest & item generator if I wanted one.. but what's the point?

And that's why I hardly enjoy games these days. It's difficult to find games that are focused and that provide meaning, challenging, and exciting gameplay mechanics or a damn good story instead of a slog through boring fights and irrelevant errands that only exist to "reward" you and which aren't intrinsically fun.

That's not to say good games don't exist, but reviews and opinions are next to useless, because I feel like most people suffer some of that addiction.. if not game addiction per se, then addiction to the instant gratification style mechanics that blind them to how boring and dull the gameplay & story actually is.

I'm actually getting more into "walking simulator" type of games because they completely shun the mainstream mechanics.

i just cant get into online games. i have tried and bounce off of them every time.

i don't like it when people eff with my space & my things and a persistent online world is a space where other people (whether they be players or developers) are encouraged to do just this.

that and yeah, and wife, kids, job, house, other hobbies, and time in general.

that said, these days id say im more addicted to collecting & talking about & and fiddle-faddling around within games now days than playing them as though my life depended on it.

I remember a friend commenting how he refuses to play WoW. (not only does he not have the money or computer to do it, but beyond that...) He watched his friend who played WoW pull up the game to show him something, then get sucked into it. He said his friend 'devolved', becoming so immersed in the game that it was all he could do.

An excess of video games is bad for your brain. Too much screen time in front of your smart phone is also bad. And yet smart phones are being used as impromptu babysitters (for babies and young children) while having addictive yet super predatory monetization methods and gimmicks similar to casinos. Let's not forget children having issues using pens/pencils because they haven't built up the muscle strength or fine movement in their fingers.

For some people its the thrill

Never played LoL the only online-only game I play with any regularity is World of Warships, but thats it, I am not good enough to go pro, and I sometimes get so burned out with how bad the game can go thanks to teammates I dont play for a couple of months, but I guess thats what keeps me from getting addicted or people just get addicted to moba style games more easily.

Thank for the video Morolf

Under the right circumstances and with the right people, EVERYTHING can be addictive.

Big negative of online games is dealing with other people who behave in immature ways or get hysterical about the competition...I'm not interested in that.
I've found that compared to my youth I'm now more interested in analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of games...discussion of that is one of the more interesting aspects of the experience imo.

Used to play World of Tanks regularly, then quit after I got screwed out of ~100€ (1 year premium account). Damn Wargaming.net, I liked that game.
