Not sure what it's all about?

Have you heard the word?
The word is that we get the chance to work with Larian Studios to design an NPC character in their about-to-win-kickstarter sequel, <span class="bold">Divinity: Original Sin 2</span> - a unique in-game character, the #GOGHero, complete with a backstory and private motivations to intertwine with the players' fates.

Well. YOU get to design them.

Because the more is always the merrier, we're handing the #GOGHero over to you, the gamers, and everyone is welcome to pitch in with their ideas! The entire gaming community is invited to a massive brainstorming session with Larian Studios & GOG.com, and to submit their own ideas for the upcoming character.

For a touch of authenticity, Larian is providing official guidelines to work with - just like the ones they use during development. Fun, but optional:

--Each character has 3 major traits: Vanity, aggression, pride, self-confidence, racist towards dwarves/elves/humans/orcs/sourcerers...
--1 Quirk or Eccentricity: A predilection for dogs in leather boots, refuses to face north for religious reasons, in denial about his singing.
--One Fear/Loss/Block/Wound: Something traumatic in their background for which they are compensating in some way, or which drives them to do something normal people don't. His wife was killed in a tragic accident and now he's a kamikaze detective with a death wish. His parents were murdered by a criminal so now he's a vigilante crime-fighter. He's terrified of intimacy so treats women terribly. That kind of thing.
--Race: Human, dwarf, elf, lizard, undead.
--Background: Gender, age, job function, loyalties.

Throughout the brainstorm, the team from Larian, including creative director Swen Vincke among others, will be joining in us to browse, weigh in, and search for inspiration! Finally, when the time comes, they'll design three final characters combining the awesomest ideas, complete with official concept art and backstory. Once again, the #GOGHero will be placed in your hands with an official vote to chose the favorite champion from the three proposals. The winning character will go on to become the community-made, full-featured NPC in Divinity 2: Original Sin.

IAmSinistar: I'm attempting to turn GOG itself into the hero. Here we go...

Name: Bruen d'If

Major Traits: Driven to cherish freedom above all else. Moody and susceptible to changing stance depending on situations, though doesn't lose sight of primary obsession. Evasive and secretive, but with the best intentions.

One Fear/Loss/Block/Wound: Was once squired to a noble and benevolent warrior, Sir Malvers Trawn. But as this warrior grew in power and prestige, his cruelty and need for control expanded. Bruen became the one to suffer most under this tyranny, pushed to do things they would have never done before, until at last a particularly savage command drove Bruen to grievously maim Malvers and escape. Now Bruen will never be enslaved again.

Quirk or Eccentricity: Refers to self in third person, which is a coping mechanism for distancing themself from the wrongs they have done in the past.

Race: Human male or female werebear/skinwalker. Under duress or in violent combat Bruen can transform into an ursine humanoid, massive and brutal. Bruen cannot use weapons or magic in this state, but the natural weaponry this form affords makes up for it. Bruen was made a werebear by the witchwoman of a tribe whose lands Malvers Trawn coveted. She worked this magic to give Bruen the strength to truly resist, and to put an end to the cruelty of Malvers.

Background: A foundling raised by the enclave holy order at the Chateau d'If, Bruen was taught that obedience and placidity were the greatest virtues. Being a quiet but observant child, Bruen so discovered the hypocrisy behind the order's facade, and when the order sold Bruen to Malvers it seemed like the chance to get out and do some good. That this hope was eventually betrayed by Malvers as well has caused Bruen to become solitary and withdrawn from society. Bruen wanders penitently, trying to do good and liberate whomever they can along their path. And Bruen suspects that somewhere out there Malvers still searches, looking for vengeance.
Awesome!!!.All it needs to a "GOG DRM free Hero!!" emblazoned somewhere on its...... shield or somewhere :P.
Werebear related to GOG Bear perhaps ;)
Gogzilla?
Deathound, Male , Hunter of all evil (demons etc), undead ,266 y old,Neutral in all politic affairs.
Aggressive
Cursed undead.Hunts all that is evil and driven by anger, hoping one day to find the evil that cursed him.
Expert at close quarter combat and stealth.Lurks in the shadows. His motives are not helping good people get rid of demons and other evil.He just wants to find the one cursed him and finally be human again.

ApplesauceKing1: How about an undead priest who use to hunt the undead when he was alive. In undeath, he is in denial that he is undead and hunts his own kind.
Alright, this is actually a good enough starting point that it really needs to be fleshed out some. Note, I now see what I did there, but somehow missed it the first few times I checked over the post :) I had some fun with the starting point and ended up going somewhere completely different with it, but wanted to give credit to the source of inspiration.

Background first since the rest of the attributes stem from it. You'll notice I avoid names for reasons that will become evident soon.

Background:
The character is/was a young male of extremely ordinary upbringing. In his late teens he caught the eye of a recruiter for the (insert lore friendly religious anti-undead movement here since I'm not familiar with the world yet), and was inducted into the rank and file. During his training he grows increasingly estranged from his childhood friend and hopeful romantic partner due to her disapproval of his new profession, though he remains naive to just how much she wishes he would return to her and their previously simple way of life. Finally after graduating he attempts to propose to her, telling her that he can provide better for them now than he ever would have previously. She not only rebuffs him, but throws in his face the pride and arrogance he has acquired along with his place in this self-righteous army. He is infuriated, but still loves her from afar for her goodness and beauty.
Not three months after this, his unit is deployed against a gathering of undead a weeks march away in a series of caves. When his commander foolishly commands his unit to pursue several undead into the caverns after a heavily one-sided skirmish, they are ambushed and slaughtered to the man. Clinging to life he watches as the undead methodically search for and kill the wounded from his party. As one of their leaders surveys the work in the guttering torchlight, he makes a final attempt to rise and destroy the undead abomination. Amused by his zeal and last act, the undead leader reveals that he can cause the dead to rise again, and taunts the would be hero with the idea of rising again as life finally leaves him.
When he wakes next it is to the alien sensations of undeath. He spends weeks confined in a cell taunted by his new brethren. After months of being left alone in his a cell with his mortal form rotting around him, he is brought before the undead leader (lich if that is lore friendly? regardless his name should insinuate pride), who speaks to him of his new place beyond the shackles of humanity. In this mentally weakened state, the Lich speaks to him of how he has and now forever will be rejected by humanity. This stirs memories of his one time love, and the thought of her rejection on top of the misery and humiliation he now suffers drives him into a rage, again to the amusement of the undead leader. Deftly focusing that rage back upon his departed humanity, the leader of the undead over time turns him against his former brethren and sends him on raids that terrorize his one time home. This culminates in his revealing all he knows of the military/religious organization and leading his undead brethren in a raid that obliterates their presence in the region entirely, and cementing his place in the society of undead in the region.
Through his rise in prestige and power, the only haunting regret the once man still has is his failed love. Years later he returns to the town of his birth, now a much darker and run down place with the loss of trade, all thanks to the demise of the organization the man was once part of. His only intent is to kill the woman who caused him such misery, and who he has blamed for every evil act he has committed since leaving the town on the fateful raid that saw him raised to undeath. When he finally discovers the home she is living in however, the woman's daughter leaves the home to leave her fathers shoes on the porch, and he immediately falls for her. She is about the same age as he was when he was killed, and even more beautiful than her mother was in her youth. Returning to the lair of the undead encampment, he asks the groups leader for the secret to turning a living being to undeath. Sensing his motive, the leader teaches him a gruesome ritual to trap a soul in it's dying body.
Returning to the village, the man stalks the daughter of his former love for days, plotting how to gain her love and turn her against her friends and family. Finally he catcher her alone in her yard late at night, killing her silently and performing the gruesome ritual when he reaches the forest outside the town. After watching her for days, he finally realizes he has been tricked yet again by the cruel leader of his host. Again inflamed against the being by his complete cruelty, he returns to the hideout plotting to destroy the lich and take command of the host. He reveals himself too quickly however, and is again imprisoned deep in the caves. Taken before the hosts leader, the lich reveals not only did he know the ritual wouldn't work, but the fact that the man himself was raised was a complete mistake. In reality the lich knew of no way to certainly bring someone into undeath, but surmised that putting the idea in the mans head as he died might have sparked some latent aptitude, and that he himself was to blame for his current state. With those parting thoughts, the lich locks him away, laughing as he collapses the tunnel leading to the cell with unknown tons of rock and debris.
The man goes completely insane of course, but immortality gives him an unfortunate amount of time to think. Over the centuries without any means of freeing himself he eventually recalls the lich's parting thoughts that perhaps he has some ability to manifest his desires into the world. With that slim encouragement, he teaches himself a crude but effective form of geomancy, and is eventually able to free himself from his tomb. By this time however his memory has decayed with the last remnants of his mortal flesh, and he recalls only vague motivations for his actions as he starts his third life in the outside world.

3 major traits: Disdain of the undead. Unbelievable patience. Compulsive.

1 Quirk or Eccentricity: One possibility is the initial idea of rejecting the idea that he himself is undead. Another might be that he hates being outdoors, so if the party (should one convince him to join them) sleeps he sinks beneath the ground or finds a cave to meditate in.

One Fear/Loss/Block/Wound: See the back story. If we need to be specific, either the self-ruined romance or slight insanity. If we were to put them together, maybe the character holds a special hatred for those that show affection towards one-another, but having forgotten why that is himself this can come out in unexpected ways.

Race: Undead. There is a lot of suggestions going this way so I hate to say it, but the idea was too good to pass up.

That went a lot longer and darker than I intended, but was fun to write. One of the things I like most about how it came out is actually how many loose ends there are. Did the girls parents ever discover her demise? What happened to the host he was part of? So far the character doesn't know, so neither do we. Additionally, most of the action in the characters back story is actually incredibly ordinary with only occasional serendipity, kinda like real life. In the context of the world he lives in at least, his story is could have happened to absolutely anyone, chance has simply placed him and us in a place to hear of it. Thanks for the entertainment and for reading this far :)
Sounds like a Larian lark. Let's give it a #GOGHero, then. :)

Name: Merril Eastpath
Race: Human
Job: Thief
Traits: Cowardly, Cynical and Opportunisitc
Quirk: Smells strongly of cabbage due to his strict cabbage diet.

Background: On the run from the law and the lawless, he's hiding out in the sticks, trying to eke out his meager living from the land and the few farmsteads. Nicking cabbage and anything else he can get his grubby mitts on from unguarded vegetable patches. Meets the PCs on one his misadventures, figures there's safety in numbers (especially behind big meatshields like the PC's party) and agrees, albeit grudgingly, to lend his 'expertise' to their cause.

Later revealed to be a part of a larger criminal organization whom he jilted, taking part of spoils from a big score, especially magical items he perceived valuable. Sadly, due to his hurried escape and inability to identify items, he doesn't really know what he took, aside a pair of boots of speed, which made for his quick getaway. (Possible quest in re-uniting the boots and gain a special item?) Regrettably, he tripped on his escape and lost one of the pair, thus losing the magic provided by the wondrous items. He stashed the rest of the loot somewhere until the heat died down and sought refuge in the wilderness, hoping to evade his former employers.

Negative trait: Murdered his partner when he learned that the gang was intent on eliminating him from the equation of splitting the loot. It weighs heavily on his mind, especially since he's against killing and was fond of said person.

Radek is an (approximately) 60 year old male lizard who has recently retired from his job as a pest exterminator (probably too much competition from low level adventurers).

He is known as an expert in poisons, whether this is a result of his former profession or the other way around is not clear, but his knowledge goes well beyond what is effective on insects and rodents.
He has a dogged determination that makes him tenacious and trying to make him change his mind can be frustrating.
He is a sourcerer sympathiser, and will aid them to avoid persecution if he can.
He will do his best to convince you his grandmother was a dragon, although there is no reason to believe this is true.
His daughter's physical appearance fails to meet the strict standards of lizard society, so he left with his family to live amongst other races. He still seeks to hide this from visiting lizards.
He opposes the current leadership of the Lizard Empire, but has not lived there for many years. He also despises Alexandar the Innocent and his regime.
Heyyou (he gets called that a lot, so he thinks that's his name)
3 major traits: Insanely Aggressive (or aggressively insane), Illiterate, Racist towards Sourcerers
1 Quirk or Eccentricity: Has a "unique" fondness for frogs (constantly seen hugging them)
One Fear/Loss/Block/Wound: As a child, watched as his mother was deformed into something similar to a frog... or a malformed human skinned frog hybrid thing... (stray sourcerer spell that went awry...)
Race: Human
Background: Gender - Male, Age - somewhere around 19 (he isn't sure since he can't really count), Mindless but effective mercenary, Loyalties - Himself
I think the GoG staff should also suggest their characters, just out of curiosity and because you're part of the community. And we're going to vote on three proposals anyway, so the community has the final word anyway.

I know you always wanted a personal lava golem. Come on now.

I think the Character should try to stand for the same things, GoG.com stands for. According to the FAQ/About page:
"GOG.com is a digital distribution platform serving fantastic computer games and movies at kick-ass prices. And no, it's not “just a store” - it's the site that's all about the greatest games ever and the people who play them. We've got critically acclaimed games, with tons of all-time classics for just $5.99 and $9.99, along with modern games from AAA to Indie, bundled with heaps of free downloadable content and exclusive add-ons, no DRM or intrusive copy protection and full compatibility with Windows XP & Vista. Most of our games are compatible with Windows 7 as well, and many work natively on Mac OS X 10.6+ and Linux - it's all right there on every product page. While games form the bulk and core of our offering, we've also recently introduced movies on top of that. Make sure to check that out, too!"

Just some brainstorming:
A warrior fighting to get undead re-integrated into thier old lives/families.
Or maybe an undead that was reintegrated into his party/familiy/village? The same way gog.com brings good old games back to a new (and old) generation of gamers?

Traits:
-Talking about the "glory days"/"old times".
- Has an undead dog called Gog*. Or maybe he just is the undead dog all along (talking with animals is an option in 1 afaik).
- For odd reasons he dislikes Cheese. Yes, Cheese from all the things you can dislike in Divinity. If that is not an option, how about dislike for Hawkers? Hard to make a character more memorable then dislike the "Not in the mood for Cheese?" guy. Propably because he/his dog can't stomach cheese right. Maybe even Lactose intollerancy when they were still alive.
- is a bit clumsy, wich resulted into him dying (and returning) in the first place.

*Multiple sources:
- The webcomic Endstone/Stonerockers has "Gog the dog", a anthropomorphic dog. It also includes a talking, smoking, cooking skeleton as a Character. So not even the wierdest Character.
- In Elder Scrolls online there is a dog, with whom you recollect his master - a skelleton that was distributed across the desert. This is not the only time you recollect a undead skeleton there. It is one of the few times where it is not the talking, bodyless skull that gives you the quest however (approxmiately 1/3 of the questgivers there are talking animals, animals, skeleton skulls or ghosts).
Sounds like fun. I'll have a try

Name: Acya.. or was it Kaya, or Akya. He's never consistant when it comes to his name.
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown. Has been living for a very, very, very long time. No amount of guessing could ever come close.
Race: Unknown. Hidden behind a robe stiched to the skin and a mask nailed to his face.

Background: Though not much is known of him, the scarce few bits of info from Acya himself has him as an apprentice wizard who strove for power and most importantly, Immortality. Needless to say be careful what you wish for. Despite having never remotly aged a day since then, Acya mind has long since deteriorated from an eternity of living. Whats left is a shell of a former man that has gone beyond the breaking point a trillion times over.
These days Acya is nothing more than a wandering wizard who has compleatly lost his mind eons ago, but is prized by all those that use him, thanks to his immortailty and immence power.

Traits: Hopelessly Insane. Rapid mood swings. Impossible to crack or control.
One Fear/Loss/Block/Wound: A constant and unending fear that he will never die.
Quirk or Eccentricity: Impossible to hold a conversation with. Will immeditly being drifiting into other completly random thing. Nailed a mask to his face and stiched a robe to his skin just to feel something, (That was a few thousand years ago). Mixes truth with nonsense. Will at times begin laughing like a maniac or screaming and crying. Prone to zoneing out.

Please forgive the spelling errors

Wow. Inspirational dullness reaches new heights.

+1 for Larian's sales department...
Race: Lizard
Gender: Asexual, because, y'know, some lizards don't really care about gender these days.
Age: Exactly 142 years and 27 days - don't you ever forget this!
Name: Gomoe

Backstory: Gomoe is a hunter with different kinds of problems. FIrst, he's not very good at hunting with a bow. Or an axe. Heck, he's not even skilled at tracking his prey properly.
Second, and that's where the trouble starts, he's hating Lizards. Well, actually he hates their smooth, soft and scaly skins. That's why he needs to hunt. He wants to glue the fur of all the animals he can find on his scales. Imagine finding him in the woods, with a few patches of hair on his head/tail/body, running around, trying to catch a bear that's actually a moose. That's got to be worth something!

He also hates PCs who picked Lizard as their race. If you want to talk to him when playing a Lizard, you have to convince him that you're supporting his fight against those ignorant Lizards of yesterday. Join the fight and stick some fur on your head already! But be careful, he better not finds out about you lying to him.
Except for that he talks to every other PC, regarding of their origin or race. He could even need your help if you have the "Pet Pal" trait. Those pesky bears just won't run into his carefully lain traps made out of makeshift wood and bird feathers.
He sometimes trades stuff he doesn't need (like the skind and tusks and... well, everything else except the fur from the animals he hunts) with the cities and villages around him. Gomoe doesn't have any particular allegiances.

Gomoe is very proud of his opinions, he likes to voice them every chance he gets. You know, racists were never known for being very smart. Or consistent in their behaviour. Or not hating their own species. Whatever, let's go hunt some birds!
No idea how much detail I'm supposed to have gone into, but I just noticed some of the details after I had written all this out, so whatever :D.

Thousand, is a "young" undead female human. Nobody knows her actual name (some who have never met her don't even realise "Thousand" is a woman), she got her title from her successful slaughter of a 1000 strong battalion that was passing through a narrow valley to attack her home town on their way to a much more significant target. This was done through a combination of traps, her skill as a marksman and with a sword, as well as outright use of fear. Although she was successful, she succumbed to her wounds before being reanimated in unknown circumstances.

Traits/Wound/Loss: Incredibly Meticulous and calculating, but this is offset by her Quick Temper, which resulted in the loss of an eye in the last moments of her famous fight. Ironically, also has a complete Lack of loyalty, probably developed when she learnt the town she had saved ended up supporting the invading army despite her victory (or perhaps because of it). Also, she's a bit eccentric (although she probably wouldn't think so) in how she always has a count of nearby potential enemies and how many arrows/weapons she has, and attempts to fix the situation if one is way more than the other.
The reason why the term "Let me put on my Robe and Wizard hat" is funny.

GoG.com nailed that one. They certainly know their bit of internet history :)!
--Each character has 3 major traits: Vanity, aggression, pride, self-confidence, racist towards dwarves/elves/humans/orcs/sourcerers...

--1 Quirk or Eccentricity:

Adamantly insists that he was born with a clubbed foot. This awkwardly comes up just about every other conversation you have with him because deep down, he truly wants to feel special and gain a small amount of sympathy from everyone he meets.

--One Fear/Loss/Block/Wound:

Our hero fears little people - Dwarves, halflings, etc. When in proximity to them, he begins stammering and slurring his words while rapidly fidgeting and averting his eyes. If touched by one of these, he instinctively reacts with fire magic. Unfortunately, his state of mind in these circumstances is such that he often catches himself on fire and has to calm down before the flames can be put out.

--Race:

Undead

--Background: Gender, age, job function, loyalties.

When he was a young boy, his parents took used to take him to the annual festival. It was what he looked forward to the most each year. He would finish his chores and behave at school just so that he could go to this wonderful event and spend the weekend there with his family. The cotton candy, clowns, and dances were his favorite, but he enjoyed all of the attractions and truly enjoyed the jubilant atmosphere. Unfortunately, there was an accident that occurred during the 48th festival when the boy was only seven years old. During one of the pyrotechnic events hosted by the dwarves, BlazeBeard was performing and inadvertently caught fire. In a panic, the Dwarf rushed to grab the bucket of water they keep for safety on the side of the stage. However, unbeknownst to BlazeBeard, the halfling stagehands they hired that year were illiterate. When BlazeBeard dowsed himself with the contents of the bucket, he discovered that it was not water, but gasoline that he had used. This caused the entire stage to catch on fire and all of the dwarves and halflings fled in a wild panic, trampling the young boy to death. With his wish of one day starring in the festival unfulfilled, the soul of the boy wandered the festival grounds as a ghost. He went unnoticed until several years later when a powerful necromancer happened to be visiting the festival. Upon discovering the deceased child's lost soul, the necromancer decided to commune with the boy. After hearing his story, the necromancer took pity on him and offered the boy a deal so that he could have a second chance at life. The boy agreed and was placed into the body of an undead ghoul. The necromancer told him that he was actually blessed with strong magical powers that were never developed. This magic had awakened and become unstable while he was a spectre. If the boy could learn to harness and control his magical powers, the necromancer would place him in a more fragile, human body. Until then, the boy would need to inhabit a more resilient body that could better withstand the blunders of miscast magic. The necromancer resuming his travels, left the boy with a hint that magic could take form based on the innermost desires of its caster. Recalling the traumatizing memories of being trampled to death by diminutive life forms, the boy thought to himself what could protect him from ever suffering that grim fate again. After a few days it came to him. He remembered that the little people were running in fear of something, and that something...was fire.
