Strijkbout: Never understood the appeal of Dark Souls, when I bought it (PC version) I thought the difficulty was in engaging and rewarding combat but the thruth is that It's an ordinary buttonmasher where the whole difficulty is controlling the camera which is just bonkers IMO.
To top it of the PC version is so broken, either with a gamepad or keyboard it controls horrible, even with mods.

Meh, I'll just keep playing Blade of Darkness instead.
Maaaaaaannn, you can't complain about those aspects of Dark Souls, and top it off with "I'll keep playing Blade of Darkness instead." That game has the same issues, but like 10x worse.

Chacranajxy: Eh, I wouldn't go as far as to decry the whole thing as lazy because of that one thing.

And if you're playing Dark Souls with mouse and keyboard, you're kinda doing it wrong anyway.

CharlesGrey: Funny thing is, the people trying to play games such as Dark Souls on keyboard are probably the same who complain about others playing their FPS games with a gamepad. There's a time and place for mouse & keyboard, but in most 3rd person games, especially those requiring precise and/or quick character movements, it generally sucks.
I wasn`t hinting that the whole game is bad because of this, just that it is laziness having a UI showing controller display when someone is using a keyboard.

As for the "complaining about others playing..." I`m not remotely fussed how others play, each to their own, only how I play ;)
If someone wants to use a controller, M&KB or (scarily, like one guildie does in warcraft) plays via a touchscreen monitor.
But we shouldn`t have to guess that "Press yellow A" means press Nth keybind on keyboard...

Erm, the part about 3rd person & precision being better on controller, than it is with M&KB, I don`t believe that for a second.
For the most part, console games come with auto-targetting or aim assist (shudder) because M&KB is more precise.
Even micro$haft admitted, after pitting console users against pc users, that console users just got wiped big time (to paraphrase ;p ).

Adding that you have a slower turning with controller, waaay faster with M&KB.

I think the only time controllers have an advantage, is in driving games &, at a push, some platformers.

DS 3, like most AAA games, was made primarily with consoles in mind, because let's face it there are a whole lot more console gamers than PC gamers, especially in Japan, so it just makes sense to optimize the game for gamepads.

And while I can't speak for you, I've tried playing Dark SOuls with both keyboard&mouse and a gamepad, and I found it much easier to use a gamepad, despite the fact that I use a k&b setup for pretty much every other game (with sports games as an exception).
Analog sticks are usually superior for any action game that isn't a shooter. In Dark Souls particularly, you'll struggle to aim attacks and dodge past enemies if you limit yourself to the 8 directions that WASD allows you to move in.
tbh I never tried using a controller in DSII, mostly stubborness (old age, I`m used to it hehe), but once I got past the awful UI, I had no problem with dodging, rolling, aiming etc.

Also, whenever I got invaded, it was easier to evade those using controllers than it was M&KB.
You can see who is using what just by the movements.

I understand that over in Japan & surrounding, controllers/consoles may be more popular (at least compared to other places) but why limit a game to one input, when computers have several? Even more so, why lumber the UI with it too?

As for eight directions courtesy of M&KB, if, like me & I imagine loads of others, you use the mouse to look about.
That is just the same as using a controllers stick, so we have the full 360 (degress, not console ;p).

F4LL0UT: According to the most recent comments it has stopped working since the last update of Skyrim or something.
I can confirm that that is not the case.

Did that work well for you? It seems like it would be difficult if you were camera-locked onto the enemy you needed to dodge.

It was rare that I ever used camera lock.
Even then, on the rare occasion that I did, it was a press of a mouse button & it was turned off again.

I guess seeing as I`m mainly a PvPest, I do tend to react quite well when I need to. Erm, usually hehe.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

The main reason that so many people (not just Japan) prefer controller for a third person game like Dark Souls is because the direction your character attacks in is tied to the direction your character is facing. Not the direction the camera is facing. You can "use the mouse to look about" as much as you want, that does not change the fact that you are limited to eight directions by WASD when it comes to aiming your attacks. There are some third person games that are an exception to this and will make your character turn and attack in whatever direction the camera is facing, but those games are the exception, not the rule. Dark Souls is very much a game where your attacks always go in the direction your character is facing, regardless of camera, which means a left analog stick is more precise for attacking than a keyboard would be.
My meaning was exactly that, camera direction - character direction.
It`s weird to try & explain, without actually doing it in game hehe.

But, if you use the obvious WASD to move about, also using mouse to keep camera/character facing where you want it to.
It is not the same as the keys seemingly eight directional.
Yes, W is making your character move forwards, but moving the mouse about is also fine tuning/turning where you are going.

You get to move about just as if you were using a stick, with the bonus of faster turning around (although I gather some games let you alter the sticks speeds?).

fishbaits: So, for anyone else wanting info, I guess a thread for stuff may help ;)

First, the bad news....

Confirmed, DarkSouls3 is just another lazy attempt...

"Still controller overlay when playing with mouse & keyboard. Bandai Namco states that this won't change."

I HATE WASD CONTROLS they are SO PAINFUL TO USE!

Think about how circle-strafing is possible, and you'll understand what he means.
Snif, I thought it was going to be a topic to celebrate the upcoming release but it's just some whining about the UI..... :(

Gotta make a new one on D-day......
I have no problem to play it with controller, but probably there will be more port problems with the game.

Aww, how nice they have rehashed one of my all time worst games, DS1. Let me not rush out and give a flying feck
