Skeptical in what way? I don't doubt it's Canonical doing it, I don't doubt that such a phone can be designed, and that Canonical has a prototype for it and can produce such a phone. I can't be sure how well it will turn out (though I have some trust that it will be okay+), and I have some doubts that it will get the $32m.

Personally for me it's the beginning of the future. I've been thinking about phones as desktop replacements for a while, and this is the first one designed for that. I'm not going to spend $830 on one though, especially up front, nor am I likely to buy it when it's released, because I don't really like big phones, and though this one isn't huge it's still bigger than I like (and expensive). But I might throw a token $1 their way just because I like the concept, and if this project gets funded I'll follow it to see how it turns out.

So is this primarily a mobile? or a pseudo mobile computer?. Nothing about whether its a tri or quad band - yes it says LTE/4G but lots of countries use 3G 850/900/1900/2100 bands and not all bands are available in every country.
$830 is a very high price for a mobile device (even if u can hook it to desktop blah blah)..

There's a lot of fanatical linux fanboi's who will throw money at anything which promotes linux. I wouldnt be surprised if they gave it a shot.

I think it is a bit shabby by Canonical to get the funding in this way without any real obligations. Being a relatively successful company with foundation money in the background they should have an easy time to find commercial investors for such a device. But of course it is convenient if you can (ab)use the fandom to get money without any real obligations. An investor would want to have a share of the profit. While the fans only get an overpriced phone.

Also the price progression is very strange. $830 for one phone, $700 per piece if you pre-order two and $800 per piece again if you pre-order 100 phones...

But are there circa 40,000 of them who are willing to shell out $830 for their conviction? $3.7m is a lot of money, but it's a small percentage of the goal, and I'm not at all convinced that it will grow fast enough to reach that goal.

Me neither. It does seem a very linux focused project and unless the mobile itself turns out to be fabulous i cant see anyone except linux fans or people who like gadgets buying in.. yes 830 is a bit steep....

I think Eterium deserves a push.
