ElTerprise: Good evening DD *big hug*
I'll check it but i doubt it. Looks like there is no German-dubbed version of it which would make it rather pointless to have it on Netflix given the fact that still most people in Germany watch foreign shows/movies in a dubbed version.

I already checked in my local library which has quite a selection of DVDs of british shows - but they don't have it :/

That's why i think of importing some DVDs of the UK or get them when i'm either in UK or Ireland.

The problem with many british shows is actually that we only get edited versions here....
They were not edited for censorship (it is the BBC, they don't really do anything too bad), they edited them to remove jokes, add some dialogue, change the lovely hand made models for terrible CGI, things like that. They tried to make it appeal more to the foreign market. But there was a backlash form the fans who had seen the original and they stopped the editing and went with the originals.

ddickinson: Good evening!

I am sure I will be feeling sleepy in no time, but not because you are boring. I get like this sometimes, a lot of things going on and it tends to keep me awake, plus I keep getting nose bleeds which is why I decided to get up for a while so as to not wake up my partner.

That is why I like it as well, although I was not so keen on the later series, but they were still good. The reboot was not so good, series 8 and onwards. Sadly a case of them flogging a dead horse. Then burying it, letting it rot, digging it back up and flogging it again. :-)

I know it has/had quite a following in the US, which is why US themed episodes started to appear more.

How are you today, I hope your day is going well so far?

P.S. Do you get the original episodes of Red Dwarf in the US, the ones with the models rather than the CGI space ships?
That sounds thoroughly unpleasant. Any idea why the nosebleeds are happening?

Agreed. The early episodes are the best of the bunch.

Doing okay here. Went outside, did some shopping for boring but necessary crap, grabbed some breakfast, did some housework.
Was going back and forth on getting a certain game, but having just read that people are having save file corruption, that's a no-go.

Surprisingly enough, I first saw Red Dwarf thanks to the local library having the whole original series on VHS.
No CGI ships there, just the models. (Which works just fine for me. I'd hang the Red Dwarf model from the ceiling if I had it, complete with a tiny figure in a spacesuit holding a paint brush latched to the side.)

I guess that's was also done with other shows because i know that the German TV version of Life on Mars was about five minutes shorter than the UK one which i have on DVD. And according to the company that eventually released the unedited version on DVD in Germany the edtiting was done by the BBC. And i'm sure that is was not for censorship. Same with Spooks iirc correctly.

CarrionCrow: It's a good one. Definitely on my list of stuff to put up from Amazon in the near future.
It definitely sounds really interesting and nothing like the usual US-sci-fi stuff. No offense.

I have been having really bad pains in my head all day, which sometimes results in nosebleeds. Nothing to worry about, I get them from time to time, but they do tend to keep me up. I would much rather be tucked up in bed with my partner but I just end up waking her up due to the nosebleeds starting and stopping. Once I know they are done with I will try to get some sleep. I think I am also suffering a bit from yesterday, but it was worth it to be out of the house and at work for a while.

One of the writers left half way through, and the remaining writer wanted to make it more American (which I think was part of the reason the other writer left), I guess due to the new US fanbase, which I am sure given your numbers would be more profitable than the UK fanbase, especially as I know the US had conventions and things, which are not really that big in the UK, at least not back then.

That does not sound too bad. Which game is having those problems?

I liked the model as well. Do you recall the episode where Red Dwarf was split into different ships, one good one bad? Well on that episode they blew the model up, but the thing is they blew the actual model up, which is why in the following series it was abort the smaller craft looking for Red Dwarf, as they no longer had the model, at least I think that was the case, it has been a long time since I read that, so don't hold me to it. :-)

None taken. =) I don't give much of a crap about either Star Trek or Star Wars, which tend to be the two most talked about sci-fi things from the U.S.

I wonder if some jokes were removed due to cultural reasons, maybe they thought Germans would not understand? I know some shows have jokes changed for the US, so maybe Germany just cuts them out. But I would not really know. As I said, I doubt the BBC would do anything that would need to be censored.

Good. Well i actually quite like some US Sci-fi franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars + Babylon 5 and BSG but there are so many more which often are just bland.

Eureka was fun though - i mean it was nothing spectacular but it was entertaining :)

That sounds bad, especially with it persisting. Nothing a medical professional to do to address the problem, I'm guessing?

I hadn't heard that. Never really dug into the behind of the scenes aspect of the show, just watched a lot of it more than once.

The game I mentioned is Danganronpa. It just came out on the rental service, looks like they released it with some nasty bugs.

-groans- What a waste. That model looked great, no point whatsoever in destroying it.

Well as i said i'm pretty sure it was nothing that needed to be censored. If my memory serves me right they only cut non-essential dialogues in Life on Mars. I read somewhere that this International version produced by BBC2 was shorter to have more slots for commercials.

Not really, it is part of everything that has been going on. They are getting better, so no worries. Of course all the stress at the moment is not helping, but that's life. It is really nothing to worry about, it will stop soon and hopefully my head will be a little better by morning.

There was a nice documentary on it many years ago that I watched with my dad. As I said I can't remember it fully, and I could be mistaken, but I am pretty sure that was the case with the show.

I have never heard of that game, but it is terrible if the game is corrupting saves. Don't you just love the quality of modern games.

I know, I would have made a cheaper replica to blow up, but the BBC is strange with how it funds shows (unless they are hugely popular, most shows are made for a fraction of what shows in the US are made with), so it is likely they would not give them more time or money to do that. The CGI version in the later series was okay, but the CGI one on the edited version I mentioned earlier were terrible, not just from a technical view but they changed the ship to be a lot longer and it just didn't look right.

Any large genre tends to spew out a lot of crap, I think. Fantasy, sci-fi, sub-genres. Little bit of good in an ocean of mediocre to straight-up awful.

I never thought of that, the shows needing to be shorter for commercials. That might be the reason behind it. That or the evil German government censoring things for no logical reason. Probably the first one, but the latter option sounds more fun. :-)

*big return hug* Well, how about having the hot chocolate first and then a tea with the sleeping pills? :P
