NoNewTaleToTell: A stupid question from a stupid person, but I've been doing a bit of work on a pen and paper RPG and I'm wondering, is it even worth thinking about releasing it commercially?

I'm not honestly not what you would call a big pen and paper player so forgive me if I'm wrong here, but I get the impression that beyond the established franchises and universes (IE: Dungeons and Dragons, World of Darkness, etc) that there is between zero and zero dollars to be made.

I honestly wouldn't have a problem releasing it for free, but I'm going to need to hire an artist because I lack the skill to draw at a professional level, and I wouldn't mind at least being able to recoup those expenses. Maybe releasing it for free and set up a donation thingymajig or a Patreon?

Not that I'm expecting it to be a breakout success, or even mildly successful on any level beyond having a fandom of approximately five people (with three of them being friends), but still...
From what I heard from friends who work in the board game industry:
Take the plot, make it a boardgame, get more cash.

Pen & Paper is popular, but commercially not viable in most cases. Many people just pirate the rulebooks or whatever. And I heard from many people they are dodging the Fantasy Flight games with their unique dice that only they sell, because its just complicated to get everyone of a group to get into that.

EDIT: or make it a card game. Those sell like stiff dicks in Iceland.

Glad I buy my rpg books. :/ 10 bucks was a damn good deal for a D&D rules cyclopedia.

Also had another idea you could do something like labyrinth lord and do a no art version free, and an art version for however much you want to charge on there.

Ouch, I get headaches a lot also. :( Hope you feel better soon. After the academic year is over, I'd probably drink myself stupid again. :P

ElTerprise: Good to hear. How many exams do you have left now?
Tomorrow I have an essay/translation exam, then I have to finish an essay for ancient mythology this week, and finally I'll need to organize an activity for my Honours College graduation next week. So two more weeks and I'll be done! (If I pass everything. :P)

Thank you! I hope your headaches improve as well. :P Haha, I sometimes drink a bit of alcohol because it makes me sleep better, but I actually don't drink that much. I'm trying to do a bit of yoga everyday, as my headaches are connect to a neck injury, so hopefully that will improve it somewhat.

If we were any more alike we'd be twins. I also have a neck injury, usually likes to cause right arm to go numb at random times and also my left leg sometimes. Hope yours heals up fast. :)

The D&D rulebooks for 3.5 are about 40-50 Euro here, which I personally feel is too expensive. A friend has them and uploaded some to the cloud, where our group can access them, for quick readups. I think it's the fairest solution. Not the perfect one obviously, but an acceptable one.

How much needed for to achieve it?
low rated

Yeah I started with AD&D 2nd edition, looked at the 3E books, but migrated to classic (the cyclopedia version) it's become my favorite D&D.
