You can download C&C as freeware (EA released it as freeware a few years ago), for example here

I'll not get it for the moment, it looks kind of cute and building the spac ship seems interesting, but normally these 4x are not my type of game.

Not 100% guarantee but i never had problems with the site. And it looks legit to me. From what i know lots of the C&C and RA1 modders and "patchers" work with that site.
