The Mystery at Greveholm (1997), currently 9 votes.

This is a game which is a simple point and click adventure game set in the fictional castle of Greveholm. It's based on a Swedish Christmas show but the game itself is a stand-alone to this show, with only certain references (such as the interior of the castle, some character references and the "plot"). The plot is to begin with not really told, but as you go deeper into the castle and solve puzzles, you will find out what you are supposed to do.

I played this game as late as just a few weeks ago and found it to be enjoyable, although a bit short perhaps. The game have also created two stand-alone sequels (although the third game is more of a prequel and the second game is totally different from the first and third, since it's more like a RPG).

“… the best knock-off of WOLFENSTEIN 3-D that anyone has created”
- Computer Game Review

Über-gory FPS/Point-and-click adventure where you're stranded on an island filled with zombies.

The game has a bit of the same relentless vipe as the underground comics of the sixties. Actually, some versions of the game also included a black'n white comic. One of the adventure elements is that you have to kill a guy because he is kinda irritating. Quiting the game gives you an animation where your character blows his own head up with a shotgun. Oh, and you shoot zombie children too. This crazy shit deserves a new release!

The Seattle Times: “Video Game Raises Concern About Subliminal Messages”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IEFC_Y3nrA

I bought ENDORFUN at an obscure sale, mainly because some guy recommended it with an enthusiasm that seemed religious in nature. And indeed, this thing seems miles away from the style normally expected from the puzzle genre, and is instead deeply rooted in new age and spirituality.

The raw mechanic of the game is that you move a dice around on a grid, using the arrow keys. The goal is to navigate the dice so that it is positioned at a certain spot with a certain side facing up. Like with Solitaire games or minesweeper, there is some basic tactics that you will learn, and I remember memorizing a number of moves.

The awesome abstract platformer THOMAS WAS ALONE shifts the perspective slightly, giving the game an unnerving edge. Likewise, ENDORFUN don't show the grid in isometric view or any similar controlled manner, but instead screw the perspective around, sometimes even turning the grid upside down. The wackiness is made complete by the Palette-shifting psychedelic backgrounds, which are no less than awesome.

The soundtrack of course consists of new-age world music. Each track is extremely short - 5 seconds or so - playing on a loop. The repetitive nature makes it more in the category of chanting than of traditional music numbers. Some of the music is quite good, especially in combination with the psychedelic backgrounds. However, it tends to get a bit too much in the tracks with the much adverted subliminal messages, where a voice is saying stuff like "I feel joyful now ... I love being alive" over and over and over again.

I really loved this game! But it was sort of a guilty pleasure. With its extreme new age style and its loud in-your-face subliminal messages, this trip is so bad that it's good.

FEATURES:
* Trippy color cycling psychedelia!
* Puzzle concept that is simpel but has lots of depth.
* New-age soundtrack with subliminal messages!

FURY OF THE FURRIES (1993)
VOTES: 73
WISHLIST: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/fury_of_the_furries

I played through all 8 regions of this epic game, all the way to the end, almost. At the last boss, I accidently overwrote the save. Basically this is a platformer where the player can morph between 4 different Furries, each with its own special ability, inspired by the 4 elements (as is the super hero group The Fantastic Four). So when you have access to all the furries you can shoot fireballs, swing around like spiderman, dive into the water and dig into the ground.
The controls have a really good feel and the levels are creative and well-designed. Good artwork and animation. What I like is that you really get sucked into the the game, and that it's a real cool place to be.

Gorky Zero: Beyond Honor, currently at 44 votes.

from MobyGames:
In Gorky Zero: Beyond Honor players take control of Lieutenant Cole Sullivan on mission in Ukraine. NATO has got intelligence of a dangerous sect that brainwashes its members and turns them into zombies, willing to obey any orders. Therefore Cole Sullivan is sent to infiltrate and destroy a secret laboratory. However things don't go as planned and Sullivan will find out more and more about the truth, a truth that differs from what he has been told by his superiors.

Gorky Zero is a stealth based action game, similar to games like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid. The game can be played in two different perspectives, isometric and third person, which can be changed easily in-game. Stealth games usually lets the player play with different gadgets and Gorky Zero isn't an exception. In your inventory you'll find not only standard weaponry like knifes and guns, but also gas traps and explosives for more ways of taking out enemies, flashlights and signaling devices used to draw the attention from enemies and your portable computer to access all the text and sound data you'll come over during your mission.

Gorky Zero is a prequel to Gorky 17 (known as Odium in some countries) by the same developer.

The Moment of Silence is released and became a proud member of the Hall of Fame!!!

The Reap and ShadowCaster had a very good week, both significantly increasing their votes.
THE DEVIL INSIDE (2000)

[currenlty 174 votes]

The Devil Inside is a very underrated game from 2000 with a very interesting concept and story elements. If you enjoy Omikron: The Nomad Soul, Fahrenheit as well as survival horror genre (Alone in the Dark, Silent Hill) this is a game you want to play. OK, let me just give you a quote that will be enough reason for everyone to vote for it:

"Shortly after the game's release, one of Poland's most popular TV stations, TVN aired a report on the game, accusing the distributor, CD Projekt of selling satanic games in commonly accessible kiosks."

CD Projekt, come on now, it is a crime that The Devil Inside is not already on GOG! The game is presented as a reality show and deals with subjects like satanism, alter ego... The name of the character is Dave and Deva, with obvious reference to Devil. When it was released, it had gotten very high scored reviews as well as pretty low ones, another point that demonstrates the game was a perfect candidate to become an underrated title. Finally, I really love the cover art.

Vote for it!

RAILS ACROSS AMERICA (2001)

[currently 59 votes]*

It is very odd that Railroad Tycoon II has more than 1400 votes and this one merely 59 at the time I wrote the first review and still only 75. It is one of the best railroad simulation games ever made and is published by Strategy First, so there is no good reason for the game not appearing here (other than lack of votes maybe). The game also covers the 19th century in North America, probably the best setting for a railroad sim. The reception among the critics was quite well, but for some reason Rails Across America never became very popular among the gamers, which makes it by all means an underrated gem. The game has a very engaging and deep macro-management system and sweet graphics for its time!

Vote for it!
