So is this a movie or a game? Looks like a movie, but it's in the game section.

Also what happened to the movie section button anyway?
I first played this game as a kid when it came out. I got it as a pirated copy.....decades later I will actually pay to play it legit.

It says "Play the Acclaimed Originals" so I am hopeful it comes with the game and its variants.

Yeah, looks like it's a set of playable games, prototypes and documentaries.

Now, in a new interactive documentary from Digital Eclipse

"COMING 2023

Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner was a college student when he created one of the biggest-selling games of 1984: Karateka. Now, in a new interactive documentary, Digital Eclipse tells the story of how a teenager with an Apple II created one of the most groundbreaking, influential games of all time.

‍Discover how Karateka was made through an exhaustive archive of design documents, playable prototypes, and all-new video features. Like walking through a museum, you can explore the interactive timelines at your own pace. The timelines reveal how Karateka became one of the first games to include cinematic scenes, a moving original soundtrack, rotoscoped animation, and a Hollywood-style love story, influencing the decades of games that followed.

At any time, play pixel-perfect versions of the original Karateka games and a variety of never-before-seen early prototypes, with rich quality-of-life features like save anywhere, rewind, chapter select, and director's commentary. Then, enjoy two new games exclusive to the Making of Karateka. Karateka Remastered is an all-new version of the original game featuring cutting-room-floor content, commentary, achievements, and more. Deathbounce: Rebounded is a fast and frantic twin-stick shooter based on Jordan's unpublished prototype.

The Making of Karateka is the first entry in Digital Eclipse's Gold Master Series, which presents iconic games in an innovative "interactive documentary" format, putting the shared history of games and their creators into one comprehensive package."

Now if only something similar could be done with the original Prince of Persia trilogy too, or at least the first two 2D side-scrolling installments. A collection that compiles all the ports, including the arguably ultimate one of the original, for the SNES.

Actually it seems similar to the format of "Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration".
They should do The Making of the Making of Karateka
As if GoG Movies Section is back.
I did not know the game was so popular. I played it on C64 and the gameplay was anything but fluent. The input lag and slow animations made it unplayable (Name “Jogin” would fit the game better than “Karateka”). Although fighting games are not my cup of tea, "Ninja" that has been released the same year is much better technically (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vbBnFizvEY), although it had exploitable mechanics that made it trivial.

Not sure how the game actually played then, but it looks good to me (I could be wrong, but looking at the footage, it seems like it has aged very well).

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

If there was, you can bet it would be locked behind Ubisoft Connect.
Funny, when listening to old Bombcasts I heard Jeff Gerstmann praise Karateka (though he may have been somewhat sarcastic, I dunno). I hadn't heard of the game until maybe a year ago, thanks to this.
