System Shock 2 was originally released in 1999 and this cult classic sci-fi horror FPS with RPG elements has become widely considered as one of the best video games of all time.

Now, from the hands of Nightdive Studios, the System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition is coming soon to GOG!

With the goal of reverse engineering the original code to port SS2 to the KEX Engine, this upcoming title will let us enjoy the legendary game from almost 25 years ago, all with cinematics, textures, characters and weapon models updated, and the Co-Op Multiplayer overhauled to create a seamless experience.

Make sure to wishlist it so you won’t miss its release or any special offer and check out the 2023’s System Shock remake to fully prepare for the Enhanced Edition!
That's the TriOptimum way!

timppu: It is possible though that I just didn't get it the first time, and if I replayed it today, I like it more, who knows.
This actually happened to me with a lot of games, especially RPGs. As kid / young man I didn't really understand some concepts of those games but now I know how to play a good majority of them! :)
If you pre ordered System Shock 2023 then you'll get System Shock 2 enhanced for free

I can barely wait, it looks really good, some of the inscription textures needs to be more hi-res, but the new character models already look brilliant - close to originals with more details and much better textures, same goes for guns.

Looking forward to wander Von Braun´s halls again, and I am genuinely curious about Digital Foundry's review, when it will come out :)
KEX engine, really? I doubt it'll be better than the original patched.

timppu: I don't recall for sure, but there was something in the "skill point system" that really bothered me, like that they were extremely scarce and I didn't feel I could develop the character the way I wanted. Or something.
I've come to realize that's one of my favorite features in video games: making me think long and hard about what kind of build I want, and making tough exclusive choices for it. And then later playing the same game with a completely different build. Skill points, limited size inventories, augs, etc. all work for it.

Too bad most games (SS2, Deus Ex, etc. included) just don't seem to have enough variety in the level and "quest" design to allow for vastly different solutions depending on your skills and preferences. Usually there's just leeway for more or less stealth and a choice in what class of weapons you engage with, but it still ultimately feels very much the same. Still, I do enjoy trying the different classes.

I thought SS2 is pretty good, though I don't really like the ending levels and respawning enemies kinda get old.

thraxman: Getting a mixed feeling for dread and excitement, not for this game but maybe Nightdive will now look at remastering Thief 1 & 2 as they ran on the same engine.
Yes, please! That would be great.

Gudadantza: I always believed that System Shock 2 wasn't created with the idea of a Jack of all Trades in mind, at least as a very powerful character. It was possible, but because of the point system scarcity it was a matter of hard decisions and it was very possible to end with a sub par character.
This may be why I tend to like party RPGs (with several playable characters at the same time) like Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate etc. more I guess. You get to try different kinds of character builds with one playthrough, no need to replay the same game several times just to feel the difference with different kinds of builds.

Sure you don't get to try all builds at the same time, but that is ok. You still get to try quite different character types and skill sets with a 4-6 character party, without having to limit your gameplay to certain type of gameplay, like "now I am a hacker, next time I will be a soldier, then a magician...".

I would have loved to replay Diablo 2 several times, trying the different types of characters... but after finishing it once, I just didn't have enough stamina to start it from the beginning several times. Maybe one day.

Then again, this didn't bother me as much in e.g. Deus Ex for some reason, than it (possibly) did in System Shock 2, or Diablo 2.

Will german audio will be included or do we have to patch it by some way? Would be a pity to miss it, coz german voice actors are great in the original.
Getting a little confused now with all these Enhanced and Remake editions. I was under the impression this game already had an enhanced edition.

1994 - System Shock
1999 - System Shock 2
2015 - System Shock EE
2023 - System Shock (remake)
TBA - System Shock 2 EE

The "EE's" are basically glorified mods. Personally speaking, I find SS2 with NewDark + texture pack already perfectly fine. SS2 has always had "normal" FPS controls (mouselook, rebindable keys, etc) and didn't have the original "early 90's FPS learning phase controllability issues" / oversized HUD issues that SS1 has, is already pre-patched with NewDark for even 4K & Ultrawide resolutions, already runs flawlessly under W7-11, etc. About the only thing Kex Engine adds is controller support. If you prefer to play FPS's with a keyboard & mouse and add your own texture pack, you're probably not going to notice much of a difference.

The feature I'm most excited about here is them fixing the co-op mode. It might be a odd game for co-op, and was incredibly buggy (and probably impossible to actually finish in that mode in the original), but damn it was fun.. I was playing it with two friends around christmas times the year it released here on GOG. Was pretty entertaining while drinking a few beers. Maybe I'll give them a call when this releases :)

Not sure what the point is when they'll probably remake it.

It pretty much does. As I understand it, the version sold on most major DD stores for years (as simply "System Shock 2") already has plenty of additions, enhancements, alterations and bugfixes compared to the original release.

Maybe they're thinking about releasing this Enhanced Edition for consoles?

Point of the EE:
So gamers don't have to mod SS2 to make it run and look better, basically?
So it works and looks better "out-the-box"?
