Swedrami: (..) especially after that godawful playable teaser from 2 years(?) ago.
If I recall correct, the playable teaser that was released is separate from this upcoming remake.

SCPM: Glad to see that this is confirmed to be coming here. :)
Also, the Gothic 2 mod The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos has been quietly added to the Upcoming list as well:

Wow, this is first of its kind, definitely step in the right direction! :O
Now I definitely wanna Skyrim here.
Will The Chronicles of Myrtana be the Gothic 3 I always wanted? :P

Gothic for me is nothing short than holy. The title that transformed me from a regular videogame player into a complete videogame fanatic.
I... wasn't really thrilled by the teaser of this remake. To say the least. I hope it will turn out to be great, but to be liked by me they should really have gone in the opposite direction, based on what I saw.

I guess this means if you love the original...buy it while you can, haha. Just in case they don't include it as a goodie..

patrikc: Truly this is the age of remakes.
(...)
In general, this a very good thing. We´ve got ways to many successors that couldn´t decide whether they wanted to be better or different then the predacessors and ended up drifting into bad directions. Remakes in theory are a commitment to exclusivly go into the better direction. Sadly enough, most of the time this standard isn´t met in reality. Despite this or due to this, I´m very glad each and every time the goal is met.

(One recent example of a well exacuted tech remake is Mexodus EE, simply brillant work. One upcoming example will be BraidAnniversary. I´ve heard a lot of praise for the DemonSoulsRemake as well and I´m still hoping it´ll come to PC. (probably one year EGS exclusive and on here afterwords)

C&C RC is quite brillant as well and most would have never believed Diablo II Resurrected happening. It looks better than PillE II, despite being real time rendered instead of prerendered...
...but both are lacking any sign to end up here. :()

Swedrami: The Gothic Reloaded mod looks to be much more enticing and true to the original, especially after that godawful playable teaser from 2 years(?) ago.

The playable teaser clearly was miles away from this target, but recent interview paint a better picture. Hopefully, it´ll turn out well.

Even if it doesn´t turn out well it´ll at least give Gothic Reloaded a huge boost and public coverage...

Swedrami: There's just something about...
You forgot pony tailed mullets.
There is a Playable Teaser on Steam, but only if you already have any of the titles in the Gothic saga or developed by Piranha Bytes.

I hope the same behavior from the publisher here on GOG.

Swedrami: There's just something about ... the "acquired taste" control scheme, the clunky UI, the rough...
Yeah, something bad. Not to mention bugs and glitches that never got fixed. Getting stuck while climbing ladders sure was fun. There's Eurojank and then there's Eurotrash. =P

I liked the world, but I sure as hell did not appreciate the actual gameplay of the original. This one could very much make use of a remake. Seems like a good few people have fond memories of Piranha Bytes's early games. Well, not me. Hadn't played any of them until they showed up on GOG. Let's just say I found their Risen trilogy to be a much more competent offering.

Personally I would be more happy if they would just "remaster" the original and rework the controls and make it run on modern hardware and natively on Linux.

Exactly what the Gothic Reloaded mod aims to do.
Except for the Linux support and the controls (which are just fine, once you get used to them).

Ok. I'll have to look into this mod then. :)
I tried to play the first one, but I couldn't make heads or tails of it. I didn't last ten minutes.

viperfdl: rework the controls
That's actually the very least that I expect from the remaster.

Gothic was one of these games, that I played through after I bought it (in 2001 or 2002 - not quite sure anymore) from start to finish, without letting myself getting distracted by any other game, so captivated was I from its world.

And 20 years ago, when I was still used to these kinds of controls - no problem.

However: I very recently (end of last year) re-installed Gothic 1 during a severe case of nostalgia, and wanted to play it again...

But in all honesty:
The old graphics - I could live with those.
Everything else (bugs, etc.) - I could live with.

But the controls, man, the controls...the game definitely would win by being adjusted to more modern control standards.

Swedrami: Gomez' female sex slaves? I'd be really surprised if they make the cut or even just are alluded to.
avatar
morolf: Yeah, that was actually pretty dark in a game that was mostly quite light-hearted...could easily be interpreted as PB making fun of sexual violence. I agree that it would get them in trouble today.
Well, story wise, it wasn't too far out there. It started with prisoners taking over a male prison colony, and got trapped inside by plot considerations, and now they had a huge bartering power and a surprisingly short list of wishes.

But yeah, not gonna fly in today and now.
