A narrative-driven point & click adventure game – Foolish Mortals is coming soon to GOG!

Obsessed with finding the lost treasure of Bellemore Manor, Murphy McCallan encounters ghosts, voodoo, and an evil phantom who wants the treasure as their own. If you want to find it, perhaps you’ll have to die too…

Check it out!
This looks too good to pass up. I'll keep an eye on it.
If its not utterly expensive and the first reviews don't pan its gameplay I'm pretty sure it will join my library in one of the front rows.

inklingwood: Developer here! Thank you all so much for the kind words about coming to GOG! It's so cool to be among so many classic adventure games. I can't wait for people to play ours when we release later this year. :)
Welcome to GOG!

I've played and enjoyed your demo, and I'm looking forward to the release. :-)

Just a question, if I may. There are lots of references, with the most obvious one being Monkey Island. The manor - is this a nod to The 7th Guest? Also, the Voodoo priest seems strangely familiar. I don't believe it's a reference to Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island or Voodoo Detective. Could it be the actual Papa Doc?

Thank you so much! So nothing is really intended as a reference to any specific game, the aim has more been to share tropes common throughout adventure games (and tropes common with haunted houses, voodoo, and Louisiana) so that ours feels familiar alongside them. The witch doctor for example, has equal inspiration from Papa Doc, Dr. Facilier (from The Princess and the Frog), Monkey Island's Voodoo Lady, and a bunch of others.

The starting point of Bellemore Manor was actually Disneyland. In the same way that Ron Gilbert wanted The Secret of Monkey Island to be like stepping off the boat on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and exploring that world, we wondered what it be like to step out of your ride vehicle on the Haunted Mansion ride.

Thank you for your in-depth answer!

From the beginning everything felt strangely familiar to me, and at the same time there was this sense of otherness, newness and freshness. This sets your game apart from others doing the same. Those using well-known tropes, famous pop culture icons, and characters from well-known franchises due to a lack of original ideas that would make them stand on their own. So it seems like it is working out just as planned. It works for me - whatever that's worth. :-)

Well that's awesome to hear! Our overarching approach has been to make sure everything feels "in-universe". There's no breaking of the fourth wall, or call-outs to pop-culture, or references to rubber chickens with pulleys in the middle. We want you to feel completely immersed in the world of Foolish Mortals from start to finish :)

Then I have only one last question: will the Tarot be utilized in the story, or is it somehow connected to the narrative but unrelated to gameplay? If it's not a spoiler, that is. :-)

It's a story element not connected with the gameplay (and actually not a major one!). The gameplay is traditional point & click adventure style - lots of inventory puzzles (...with some others for variety).

I see. :-) As I mentioned in my first post, Tarot seems to be gaining popularity in games, and I'm also into it just for fun. That's why I was curious to learn more about how it's going to be used here.

With that said, thank you once again for taking the time to answer all of my questions. I wish you all the best, and I hope all your hard work and dedication will meet with commercial success. :-)

Great, I don't care for a constant stream of MMucasFlem references.
I think it can certainly work in other games, but in this one we want it to feel like a real (if a bit unusual) world. We will still have humour in the game though - but it comes from the situations and eccentricities of the characters rather than references :)
Now this is my jam.
nvm ...

neumi5694: It's coming ... According to discord it's finished and should arrive within a week max.
I think you might have something mixed up! Foolish Mortals definitely won't be ready within a week - we're looking at a release later this year :)
