It's not just industry drama though, is it? This whole system of needing to be right (regardless of whether it's based on truth), the torches-and-pitchforks mobs of 160-character tweets and the incredibly short attention span of social media is incredibly problematic. Social media has brought about great societal change that have overwhelmed individuals and that our institutions and accepted practices are too slow to respond to. Avellone isn't alone in this; something similar happened to Alexis Kennedy (Failbetter Games / Rain Factory, of Fallen London, Sunless Sea and Cultist Simulator fame) among others, and it can happen to others. I'm not a powerful or influential individual in any way and my life is pretty boring to observe, so it's unlikely anyone would level such accusations at me (I bet Avellone didn't see this coming either), but I honestly have no idea what I should do or who to turn to if someone did.

Dating a woman these days is a coin flip, there's a chance you get someone who is somewhat approaching "normal", but there's also a chance you'll get someone with a screw loose who will flip out and try to ruin your life.

Honestly, I don't know. Maybe you could use the term retroactively, but I don't remember hearing the term "social media" before the advent of facebook, and even then I think it was referred to as "social network".

I'd say either I've become less tolerant, or (Western) mankind in general goes increasingly crazy in a non-good way.

It was being used within the context of the post and not as a slur per se. If you don't like the word then campaigning against gangsta rap would be a better use of your efforts.
